lets discuss about making manga.
talking about all things from making a one shots, to full volumes, to doujinshi are allowed.

>> No.3731978

is it worth watching bakuman?

>> No.3731981

>>3731964
Do you want to talk about the publishing part too?
>>3731978
Read it instead. The anime doesn't add anything new, in fact I'd say it makes it quite boring;

yeah publishing is also cool, anything discussing making your own manga in any form is good.

my publishing plan is self publishing mine and also placing it online on pixiv

I liked these two videos about SFX and effect lines although I made regular comics, not manga
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouesEnSBtgI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdVf1Y6qox4
Ignore the cringey presentation and format, the content is decent

Manben on YouTube is always interesting if you haven't seen it yet although it's more about the general workflow than actual lessons on how to make a comic

The author of Devil's Candy is incredibly skilled and made a few blog posts about her process
http://blackmoontides.blogspot.com/2012/11/making-soulless.html
http://devilscandycomic.tumblr.com/post/129612721345/people-have-been-asking-for-process-pics-so

>Two videos of her doing some inking
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYXdrxKvElc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDYiSF2AywM
she doesn't explain much though.

I haven't really looked around that much but this is what I liked, most tutorials are just timelapses of people doing the actual thing

The Will Eisner trilogy of books is good
The books "Making Comics" and "Understanding Comics" are good

Akira Toriyama made a little fun comic about manga but it's only in Italian and French IIRC
https://mega.co.nz/#!UV4wCTyQ!Mwx4v0inlOJ5HRTjlOvroRvPac185MooNWLWmssb9ag

P.S. if you don't have Japanese work ethic and draw 16 hours a day you'll likely NGMI anyway so abandon all hope

thanks for sharing these I like them a lot, never seen the sfx stuff before so I know those will be a good watch. I have watched a bit of manben it's really good but I need to get back to finish all the episodes of it. i'm totally going to check out these resources, the only legit physical manga making resource I own is the book "manga in theory and practice" by the creator of jojo. that and a whole lot of bad how to draw anime books I bought in high school not knowing how bad they are, hahah I own like 6-7 of them I think.

you make a good point I need to get more discipline to be honest, but its something i'm working towards. I need to constantly drawing until it becomes like breathing.

as far as actual drawing goes, most Japanese artists use their equivalent of Loomis/Hampton for construction. And a whole lot of reference books, they are actually a huge thing in manga that is never mentioned

ars est celare artem
you will have to learn to cut corners and get things done, most mangakas straight up trace a lot of their backgrounds
it's very romantic to think you can do everything from imagination but the truth is that it won't come out as good and it will take a lot of time
this is just the reality of this field, if you want your work to be the product of pure skill then start learning the piano

1.Different page size: Comics are bigger.
2.Different deadlines: Mangaka have less time.
3.Different workflow: with comics there is a writer, an artist and a colorist, with manga there is the main mangaka, (writer + artist) and assistants for backgrounds and screentones.
4. Different reading direction: Japanese is vertical.

These things had an impact on how comics and manga are traditionally made. In manga there are tons of close-up, for example.

I'd argue that the anime is the true version, all the more so if you compare it to the story. They were asked to potentially ruin the story of Reversi in order to have it line up with the anime and they didn't want to do that because the padding would be obvious. Having Nanamini return as the badguy with a beefed up version of his online idea sourcing was clearly filler. It seems no surprise that the anime and manga end around the same time and that this was a point of contention in the story itself.

I don't know what kind of anime style you're going for and your rough drawing is so vague I wouldn't know what to say.

Just clean it up and ink it. Why do you need to make it 'anime' anyway? It doesn't make sense, you're going to draw according to your tastes anyway

>>3732206
I was going for something a little to my hero academia inspired but not directly ripping it off but i failed, as I want to make a one shot manga with a tomboy main character (sort of like a shonen manga but with a female main character).

i want it to be anime because i like the anime visual style more so than the western comic style also its a lot more popular.

i know i messed up the face pretty bad and i need to do something to fix it because it vaguely looks like anime but not really, i don't know what i'm doing wrong.

>>3732209
i'm using a Wacom intous so it's kind of hard to get good line economy when it's not a screen tablet or line weight, i can do it as my initial sketch had few lines but then i chicken scretched over it to get more control as you can't really ever get lines to look exactly as you want when it's not a screen tablet as you have to do a lot of guess work for your pen placement and a lot of ctrl + z. but i'll take line economy and line weight deep into consideration for my final line art and i will also turn up my pen sensitivity and try not to press as hard.

thanks for the advice

anybody actually draws manga here ? how do you go about the story writing and storyboard ? Do you go straight into sketching the pages, do you write a basic scenario ? I struggle with this kind of stuff and I'm not sure how I should study it

This is probably not a very good example, but this was what I can find right away with the right stages.

Consider doing a storyboard. It doesn't have to be elaborate, just the dialogues, panel lay outs and stick figures that approximate where the figure will occupy the space in the scene.

Its always easier to modify or edit something than to put everything in its final form from the get go. Lay out everything simply, don't try to draw finish figure on a empty page. Once you get a basic storyboard its easier to come up with edits or improvement from that point.

Dip pen ink is waterproof. There is waterproof fp ink but it's expensive. Dip pens have much better line variety, they're just better for drawing. A g-nib has more flexibility than a 250€ gold nib fp.

a dip pen holder is cheap, the nibs are cheap, and india ink is cheap. all of them are very easily available too. with a combination of nibs you can achieve a large variety of line weights. a g pen is far more flexible than most dip pens you can buy until you get very expensive. it's common to switch out nibs in dip pens during inking but not fountain pens. maru, gpen, school, spoon, japanese nib, it's common to use several depending on the artist and the lines they want. you do not want to use india ink in a fountain pen as it is generally harsh to the internals and will likely clog. the nibs from dip pens aren't meant to be used in fountain pens either.

Different people speaks differently. They might have preference in certain vocabularies or sentence structures, depending on their experiences. The advantage we have over the character themselves is that we can take our time to work out these things, its not just spurr of the moment.

For example, a character might be someone who doesn't like to express themselves in words, so they might choose simplest answer to specific questions, like yes, no, I don't know. Another character might very knowledgeable they were question about, might provide informative answers. Another character might not be knowledgeable, but still want to make themselves looks smart, they might try to bullshit or use a lot of filler words, like, "uhh". "well", "so like", etc. These are all extra miles you can put some work into if you want to flush out your characters. Once you get into writing different characters, you might not need to plan it out.

Araki's "Manga in Theory and Practice" really only teaches you the rudiments of shonen story structure, which to any up and coming comics scriptwriter isn't very complicated at all. I was left thinking the book was more autobiographical than genuine resource. If there's anything to take from it, y'all definitely ought to be looking up the scripts from your favorite films and tv shows. Take from example.
>>3734562
Script-writing + storyboarding have usually been separate processes in the western comics industry but that hasn't always been the case. Scriptwriters may sketch out a rough outline of what they want for the artist to replicate, or they don't and merely describe the scene and let the artist interpret. What matters is whether or not you have a clear enough vision and the capacity to articulate it.

I feel like the image of the artist-author gets paraded a lot more in the manga industry than in its western counterpart; which may explain why we never see manga scripts actually getting published. The scriptwriting + storyboarding process comes across as this blurry mess; what penciling shown in Araki's book for example was just laughably scarce.

If you're interested in western examples of scriptwriting and storyboarding you should definitely check out these:

I did not place any ads on that page, they are from the host.

I don't remember if they have an ads program or not but I think it does require a paid account to place your own.

I didn't think ads were something I needed to consider because my readership is very small, I think its less than 100 hit on average /week.

The problem is that I have irregular update schedules, and had just came off an year long hiatus. I had been working on things in this project but it was never finished enough for me to post.
