Experienced artists are probably a lot more jaded when it comes to art and as a result they're too bored to talk about the same fundamental stuff they went over a million times for years. While beginners just discovering these stuff is naturally more excited to share their findings.
But I'm sure you can find some pros that are passionate in teaching, they're just harder to come by.

not an expert in trad, but if I were to take a guess, you could probably get a similar effect with India ink and water in various amounts to get different tones. it'd prob take a huge amount of trial and error to get it to look the way you want it though.

About the thread, I have friends who went for sculpting, ceramics and painting etc majors. I went into 3D art for games and anim. We all went to different schools but hung out and critiqued eachothers work. Almost all of them had to go back for another degree. Only one or two have had gallery showcases.
