TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

Construction is building up complex shapes out of simpler ones, such as cubes, spheres, and cylinders, then building from that base. big eyes + big nose + big lips does not equal realism. its still cartooning, but probably less simplified than what your so called cartoon drawings look like. start by studying from real life photographs and try replicating the likeness to the best of your ability, then reflect on what you screwed up, try imagination drawing again, and repeat

Your style is quite different from realism (that is not a bad thing btw it's pretty cgood), I tried to give it justice with out using more midtones and restricting only to the colors you used but I obviously I can't do it like you. It is not easy to go realistic from a cartoonish pastel imagery.

For more realism look at your light sources their intensity and angle as they form the shape. On here I added filter layer that adds -40 brightness and +50 contrast. Then divided the background with a darker red half to make the light more apparent. Then also tried to make it like the left part is less lit and the right part more lit.

Then I changed some basic things, added more highlight to the eyelid and more shadow to the eyeball. Changed the nose to be more realistic, this is a big change compared to yours, changed the lips to be less ground added corners of the mouth and made the teeth also less flat by adding shading to the left side.

Also added some more detail to the neck and shoulders but that didn't really add much I feel.

She is really cute anon well done! Mostly I would change the shoulder area to make it more in line with the pose, the neck especially since the perspective looks downwards. Would also gibe her more curve with ribs and the hips, widen the lower area of the skirt to help the perspective and the pretty dress.
on the face I pushed the eyes up a bit, maybe too much even, and made their angle downwards again to add to the perspective.

Please do. It's not ¨copying¨, drawing from life is one of the best ways to improve and will absolutely not hamper your creative skills in any way.

"There are no rules, just tools" therefore anon cheating is impossible.

>Is the ultimate goal to be able to draw anything from memory?
The ultimate goal is what you set for yourself, a lot of professional artists draw from refs. It is better to know the basics like light, perspective, colors etc. Knowledge like that can and usually must be applied no matter what you create.

Do some of you guys have days where you focus on practicing/studying different fundamentals? Like for example Monday will be used to practice perspective drawing for "X" amount of time, or Wednesday will be used to study anatomy/proportions, life/photo drawing on Thrusday, personal art on the weekend, etc.

I know I need to get good at perspective to do figure drawing well and need to be good at life drawing/observation to be able to render shit well. But if I spend too much time on any one thing I will start getting bored with it. Maybe a study schedule will be the best thing for me.

Even if I just spend 1-2 hours a day on the fundamentals I think I would still get better.

Here is your redline anon. The eyes are too big, there should be enough space in between the two eyes to fit a third eye in there that is roughly how wide apart they are. The nose is halfway between the eyes and the chin, then the bottom of the lower lip is also halfway between the nose and the chin. The ear, when looking from the front is usually reaches the eyebrows and the nose but it moves as you look up or down. The eyebrows need to reach closer to each otehr normally the eyebrows are pretty long and go beyond the corners of the eyes unless they are missing due to being plucked or old age.

experiment with what you've been taught. take your balls and add some shapes on them to accentuate facial features and go wild with it. fuck it up a bunch of times, because you absolutely will, every mistake is something learned. well after a few hours of failing I think i've realized why loomis is considered a meme for beginners. It seems like it requires a pretty decent knowledge of perspective and fundamentals. I can't rotate shapes and recreate them perfectly on paper like Loomis seems to think I can do from the first page. Or being able to judge how to construct a face to make it look aesthetic w/o references.

I guess I'll probably go through keys to drawing since ive finished right side of the brain, then perspective made easy. Dunno if I'll ever be able to go through loomis books since im so shit.

This is why I recommend people to start with perspective books first and maybe trying drawing from life/copying stuff, learning construction is something you can make use of later on, if you have troubles putting objects in perspective your constructions will always look off, which makes the errors cascade as you build up on them.

You may want to just learn to draw perspective grids and use them as guides. That might help a bit.

not bad anonkun. another thing from what other anon said is to maybe just remember your line weights to convey the shape and perspective. closer lines overlapping others (the foreground legs) can have darker lines than the body which have even darker than the further ones.
I know it's just a construction-y sketch kinda thing, but no harm in practicing more than one thing at once and it helps convey the ant as a 3d object better

also you're construction lines are too hard
try to use softer strokes so when you erase it then it will be less visible

anatomy should be proper before going into details like the armor and facial features

i agree on the having some darker markers.

otherwise i think you're doing fine and you just need more experience.

at some point you might want to look into using linear perspective, but that's a big kettle of fish. you also might want to use watercolors or something to learn a bit about mass drawing, you're very line focused.

I’ll try adding some color to help me understand mass better. I want to try and get a process of inking physically, scanning it, and then painting the color in like a comic book. remember that in daylight there is more light not less dark. so if something is in shadow then it still goes all the way down to black.

of course it's common to make all the values brighter as a style thing, and that's what i think you've done, but is /beg/ thread so i thought i'd say it anyway.

you also used a fairly thin colour range, there could be more greens and yellows, and more pure versions of red and purple. on the right face there's a nice red which is the sort of thing i'm talking about.

the light is a bit inconsistent there's parts where it seems a very yellow and parts where it goes very neutral or almost blue.

there's a few sections like mr. lefts chest where it's indistinct to the point of being blurry. the brown you used for the hair is very ugly, especially digitally. the facial details need to be more a simplified version of the masses, as they are now they're heading over towards the anime-like line and dot symbol kinda thing. i don't think you really captured the expression or really any expression. and there's not much allowance for texture.

aside from all those nick picks there's some very nice use of greys, there's a good feel for the atmosphere, the shadows by and large have a very nice saturated vibe, and it looks like day time, so i guess that's mission accomplished.

1/10 on Sargent scale, which is quite good, thats why you don't use a sargent scale. unless you're a master you default to one. :p

Ah I see.

So to stop drawing things in the same position and making your drawings look dead flat, you can stop this by using one perspective for like a character.

But, what way would you line up all the curves to the vanishing point?

Does that even need to be done?

Hmm, I thought about looking up some spear throwing gestures since I'm doing gesture drawings. Ended up looking at youtube videos of javelin Olympic throwers. You do not have to use precisely measured vanishing points for every work unless their absence would make the material much worse. The key is that you understand what you are doing, if you are drawing a single character in a mostly organic area and you are experienced enough then then you can just eyeball it becasue you know how the shapes work in 3D space. If you are doing artificial shapes with clear cut straight lines like boxes, rooms, buildings, streets then it is better to have stuff precisely measured.

Well done Anon really strong base here, use the light to define the forms and shapes, the nose a is a bit too big and the eyes need to look forward more. Add an edge to the mouth the mouth is rarely ever 100% lips.

Rendering hair depends on how complicated you want it to be, straight flat hair is simpler more frilly and richer detailed hair is obviously harder. If you want and example compare Disney's Merida and Rampunzel, Merida's hair is a nightmare to paint becasue of the countless individual locks and strands. So it is up to you but try to keep it manageable varied and NEVER try to draw every single hairstrand, treat it as a normal mass.

I have the older 10.5 inch model but you can't go wrong with it for drawing if you don't mind using diffirent programs and aren't reliant on things like photoshops clipping mask layer thing. Best you can do is just go to an apple store and try one out like I did.
