TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

fully recommend beginning anatomy and studying the human figure.
learn to press lighter with your pencil and build up graphite on the page, learn some lighting and values, and how light and ambient light works (can see some general stuff there which is good :)). Mostly I'd say start drawing from references and make sure to draw what you see, not what you think you see.
But for 2 months it's good, you're clearly trying which is a lot more than others. Keep at it brother.

I get the impression that you did a one to one 2D drawing here. Which is not bad at all and if that was indeed your goal you succeeded.

FZD approach is all about inventing from the mind though. So I would say to start "designing" things in the third dimension.

learn to see things as a box (in this case, a rectangle) consider foreshortening of the left side.

it takes a while, but considering your approach of drawing everyday you will cover good ground.
great idea on using a clipboard and printing paper too.

The construction is bit skewed.

The head's tilt (the subject is looking upwards) is relatively mild, so the three equals should be true. The distances from hair line to eyebrows, from eyebrows to root of nose (not tip of nose, where nose connects to face), and from root of nose to the tip of chin should be pretty much equal. They are quite different distances in your drawing.

The eye is not turned to three quarters as much as the head is. The mouth is not at the center line.

One of the biggest mistakes is that the eyes are lined in different orientation as the rest of the face (brow ridge and mouth). Compare the pink line and the light blue lines in the picture.

Try to draw eyes from plaster casts and asaro head so you'll get their construction right.

The overall construction of the planes of the face is off but you'll get to that later champ.

Squint. With pencil you can't paint lighter values so to make your lighters stand out, you need to darken all the other values in relation. I would say don't fear and go darker than you see for all your shadow shapes at the start, they will make things pop out more, as you get better observing you will naturally do less drastic contrast.
Nonetheless everyone at the beginning goes and uses values very faintly lol, which makes things washed out. But we all have been there I feel.

Helps to look at the reference. Which has a subtle head-tilt thus distorting the 1/3 rule.

Anon should include references to his work, unless he wants the observer to critique it on a personal opinion basis. In which case the 1/3 rule could apply, depending on the intent of the artist.

I feel in this case the artist was definitely working to copy the reference and thus the 1/3 distortion should be taken into account.

I also heard it's a good idea to avoid straight lines when drawing organic shapes (unless you are doing any sort of deliberate stylizing).

Again, I'm a total toy and unable to give any piece of advice, but maybe you should try to shade in a more expressed / explicit way, understanding the planes of the head.

And, I think that chicken-scratch contour lines not gonna move anybody anywhere if you understand what I'm trying to say...The way an artist's hand _moves_ means a lot; drawing all the lines with fingers and/or a bit of a wrist won't give a real progress and a real look ever.

It's good habit forming: drawing what you see, not what you -think- you see. Gets you away from symbol drawing people from reference, as a prime example you'll find here.
If you've done the pepper exercise, it's essentially training to not do that even when the reference is actually infront of you. People have a tendency to look, draw, and then figure they know what comes next and don't look again for awhile.

try different ways of holding your pencil. You don't have to hold it like you're writing text.
Also watch vids of people drawing. Watch how they hold the pencil.
Also also make sure you have a few different kinds of pencils. Decent tools can eliminate a lot of extra work.

Hard to tell from that angle but it looks like ya did good. Soften the line on the fold of the right eyelid.

Notice that everything below the right eye is looking flat, no definition of the shape of the face. Push the values more and add more gradients to show the planes of the face. You did that well on the chin.

You have good shapes on the shading but they end too abruptly. For example the areas beneath the brow seems disconnected from the middle of brow. It can look more connected if you soften those edges of the shadow and blend them in. Would help if you added more values there to show the subtle changes of planes. It will make your highlights more visible also throughout the face.

I did the same Anon and I worked with Acrylics too, it definitely helped me in the long term because I was forced to paint still life studies a lot. Although half the time I was wrestling with color mixing and waiting for it to dry it was educational. If anything it helped me to appreciate the magic of digital technology how simple it makes everything. Painting traditionally is a huge huge hassle compared to digital it took a lot of motivation and patience to push through it, while it felt like working with stone age tools.

So if you can and have the drive to push through it (and ideally don't have to pay a lot for it) I say definitely go for it. It will really suck at the start but you won't regret it later.

Looks spot on, I would say you lost a bit of the angular face shape, making it look softer (might be also the effect of soft values contrasting with the hard shapes). The jawline is where I see most of the differences. The eyes also look less menacing on yours.
They are very subtle differences though. The shirt shadow values I feel should be darker or maybe the light values lighter? Lacks contrast there, looks kind of flat. I don't like personally those hair highlights but the ref has them about the same so lol, can't judge.
I think you are doing well nonetheless, I would do a worse job.

Sorry I should have explained myself better. I did both those drawings. the assignment was to do a hard edged 4 value study for the first part, and then the second part is to refine it to a finish. I was trying to show my process. I just didn't include the reference photo because I figured since it's part of a paid Schoolism course I might get in trouble or something for sharing it.

I was wondering mainly if I fucked up anything in the anatomy/proportion/symmetry that stands out, or what I can improve with my rendering technique. What don't you like about the hair highlights?

I find the character a bit too detailed and bright compared to her distance from our viewpoint. Try to add a brush stroke with sky color / background color on top of her (him?) on top of a new layer and drop down the opacity to 5-10% . It would make the piece more uniform and push back the character.

The tip of the train is not in perfect perspective, but it can be fixed with distort tool fairly easily, no worries.

I like the trees, they are obviously the bigest thing in this picture. I'd like to see more darker values on the bank leading down from the train, in our foreground. Maybe darker foliage and darker underside of the rocks. Maybe even some reflected pink light from the arcane symbols?

With little stronger value on the foreground and atmospheric perspective on your character the piece is very good really, not far from concept art level. And I'm talking about the real concept art, that rarely sees daylight outside of studio, not promo images.

You did well! Have a beer or something

Well, then the rest I would still apply it, you lost those interesting or more natural points (like the jawline) when rendering it. Hmm, I would say for a man the eyes are a tad big proportionally speaking. But without seeing the reference I'm just guessing. I picked some from google to compare.

Okay check the pic and notice how highlights are subtler and more broken, clumped in different masses. Yours are a bit too regular and following small strokes. They are also quite light in value, it almost makes him look as if he had grey hair, which could be also.

I can see that you are trying to learn - that is more that most people do.

Portraiture is hard - when you are not tracing. You have to get very subtle angles and distances correct.

I'd advice you to see how different features are constructed. Eyes (see the pic), nose (as it is an 3D object sticking forward from the front plane of the head) and mouth (very puffy pillow shape that extends from just the red lips). Open up some references in mspaint or photoshop and draw over the shapes with as little straight lines as possible, to get the correct shape.

To eyes you need only 7 or 8 straight lines, the opening of the mouth is just a seagull shape (or wide letter M) and nose consists of few planes (see asaro head).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T7cDY7YDsg This is a three hour long video, but the important lecture part is just 45mins. Have a cup of coffee and watch it, it will kickstart your leaning of how to draw a head and eventually a portrait.

Check out some measurement guides of Dorian Iten - he shows how to measure distances by comparing them with few straight lines. It's a good way of measuring practically anything, from a landscape view to a portrait.

Hope this is of some help

Anon just experiment with it. Learn to have a light touch. This is something you do not "need" to have to do work but it is beneficial in the long run. having a lighter touch puts less strain on your hand and you can control the lightness of your strokes without having to manually change tool settings all the time which one must do for digital all the time anyways so any way to reduce that will be a benefit.

It is not a must have but pays off

please explain what's wrong with it specifically. that video only recommends making very general marks at the very beginning stage, to get proportions right as a whole. as far as I can tell I do have proportions right in a general way, and that is not the origin of whatever problem I might have with painting or colors afterwards because of lack of skill and experience.

>> No.3662276

>>3662262
Construction has more functions than just establishing distances. If you look at my earlier message, you see how proper lay in stage ("sketch" stage) has established planes of the face.

If you just copy colors from reference image, you won't get that right, or it will be hit and miss. You should draw the planes and where they face (upwards, downwards, towards us or away from us) to learn how to sculpt the head with your brush.

Also constructing features is secondly most important part. You in >>3662223 have established the placement of the eyes and root of nose, but there is no depth, no information how light should react on top of these features. If you can't draw 2D planes convincingly there is a little chance you start getting them right by painting them with complex thing called color. This is why monochromatic drawings and studies are strong.

And the video has a lot of information how to construct features, even though if I remember correctly the advanced feature constructions are behind NMA subscription. You should also pay attention what reference to choose, a subject that is often dismissed at these threads. Look for good value patterns to achieve most from studies.

I can't for the life of me get how gesture drawings are supposed to work. I watched various videos on it by people like Proko and when I do it it just looks like meaningless scribbles instead of showing some form of action. Do you need to grind these for hours on end for this to change or is there some secret to it? Also how long are you supposed to spend on each gesture?

It's either super stiff photocopy or meaningless scribbles for me and this is by far not my first time trying to do these, although my last attempts have been quite a long time ago now.

I think most of the times, when people are refering to loomies they are actually talking about bulding figures out of simple shapes (like a crone, a cube etc). The scale of the figure doesn't really matter at this point, the most important part is to understand how to construct something out of 3D elements. So it's more of a mind thing.

>> No.3662913

Just focus on learning the base anatomy and perspective, it is a long and challenging process but pays long term dividends.

For example the hands should be big enough to cover half the face excluding the forehead. The ear 's top lines up with they eyebrow and bottom lines up with the nose.when looking straight. Also the Ear starts from in the center of the side of the head.
https://www.proko.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/ear-placement.jpg

The top of the noes should always be lower than the eyes. The two shoulders should be switched the shoulder that is behind the head should be more obscured than the one that is in front of it. Try to think in 3D a bit more. The neck is to thick compared to the shoulders even if you are stylizing the proportions.
Once you learn more anatomy all these will be clearer.

The crown itself looks too flat and 2 dimensional drawing its edge with an ellipse instead of a straight line. Perspective knowledge helps here

As the other anon said, you'll have to push those values. Problem is that the lightest value you have on that paper is already darker than the lightest value on your reference (the fabric on the tablet) so its making it merge things that should be of different values, and that throws many people off. But again, you'd benefit a lot by going darker on the obviously darkest parts of the reference. Keep going!

The general notion of symbol drawing does not exist because it is drawing what you think is there instead of what you see. In reality, everything is what you think because you're drawing what you think you see. You are not a computer. i know biscuit has some strange eyes anon but he doesn't usually look like hes had a stroke. those eyes are far too droopy.

more importantly however, learn to draw lightly. your biggest problem at the moment is that you are just sort of stabbing your pen into the paper to make dark outlines, which i guess works but it doesnt look good. practice holding your hand above the paper and not pressing into it as you draw. it will help you make quick and good looking maps of your drawings before you dedicated hard lines to them. aside from that just keep practicing, drawing is all about mileage and the more you draw, the better you will get.

What parts of the brain are linked with drawing ability? I mean, this board always says you wont make it if you havent been drawing since 12 but then you hear stories of people who started drawing in their 30s and became godtier two years later

The brain does not work that way Anon, even present day science has very limited information about the brain's deeper functions. But what we do know that the brain is extremely versatile and adaptive most functions are created by multiple parts working together. There is no clear cut fixed map that says this part does this and that part does that. There were documented cases of people who lost large portions of their brain, like think 30%, due to accident or illness. Yet somehow they still lived relatively normal after that not absolutely healthy but tehy had everyday jobs and routines. There are people that were born without a cerebral cortex and lived an average life, graduating from high school and no significant difference in personality or motor skills compared to the avreage

Almost everyone drew at their childhood in school just for shits and giggles they just stopped. Drawing and art is mystified too much, drawing is a general skill with basic scientific theories that can be learned just like math, and then hand eye coordination and basic motor functions just like riding a bike or throwing a basketball. After that it depends on how much time and effort one can invest into practicing it and how effective is the learning methods which are again mystified and vary because it is such a general skill that many ways were invented to do it. There are people that lost their arms and produce great paintings using their foot or mouth because they grinded enough to learn it.

Also "making it" is just a meme here and a vague concept in reality, generally it is referred to the point where you can live of comfortably from your work indefinitely provided you do not get tired or give up. There are people who are amazing at art and still consider it a hobby and people who are just average at it and still able to reasonably profit out of it. Living off your art work is not just the art skill ability itself, you will need other every day skills and general business skills too, which you would need for every other job anyways no matter you work freelance or as a company employee. Then there is the thing that you still need to keep your skill up to date. Learn to use better tools and keep practicing the fundamentals and your chosen field to keep your skills in shape, like every other skill if you don't use it you lose it.

Getting that exact thing would be hard. Maybe a wash of ultramarine with a hole in the middle and carefully lifting as it dries. Probably at the glossy sheen stage so when you dry brush with a flat it lifts leaving clear lines. In watercolor, anyway.

The ref photo looks like it was brushed towards the middle with a rather dry brush, then lifted out some godrays. It's one of those things you'd have to get right the first time and not overwork and ultramarine is the only blue I can think of that is that red and lifts at all. Maybe indanthrone, but I've never used it.

oh, sorry, I misread that, my bad.
Try analyze the photograph more - search for shapes with form as key identifiers and landmarks, persay. Obviously, make sure your initially sketch is approximately correct, as having a minor flaw can lead to a major issue down the line.
But, basically, bigger image = more time spent. Most of the time a hell of a lot more time spent. I have a real issue with large canvases myself, kinda just get to a point where I want it over & done with cause idk wtf I'm doing anymore at a specific stage. Try take it slow and steady, and unless you're going for just basic shapes as a lesson to yourself (ie not going for detail at all), try keep a similar sized canvas for photograph.
