Will line and wash cripple my ability to grow as a watercolorist?
I hear the best of the best don't even lay down line work during prep phase after a certain level. Some people say it's a crutch, and that I should learn how to lay down large shapes one my first wash, then smaller ones in subsequent washes instead of drawing guidelines with pencil/pen.

Line and wash is actually the easiest discipline of watercolor, because you define objects with black lines instead of hue and shadow.

if you need to do it then do it. if you can't but want to, figure out what knowledge you lack and practice towards that goal. why do you need your hand held?

drawing before painting is lame btw. usually a sign someone hasn't learned much about painting, or is like super uptight about controlling where the painting is headed from the start.
