>What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Hi anons, I've been struggling with rendering for a while now. I can't identify why everything I render looks so messy and not clean, I try to take my time and analyze what I'm doing wrongly, but I just can't find the error in my ways. My linework also "doesnt work" in combination with the rendering, causing me to erase certain parts of it, making it more transparent so that it isn't really visible, but I really hate doing this and instead I want the rendering and linework to work with eachother. pic related is btw referenced from one of yoshinari his drawings.

Can some fellow brother anon offer some insight in what I'm doing wrongly (and/or what I should practice to get better in this).

Because it's messy and not clean anon.
1/ The line are messy, jaggy. Be more confident
2/ You need to practice edge control, everything look blurry, muddy.
If you having a hard time with linework, maybe try out painting.

Thanks for the answer brother anon.
So it does not have anything to do with the thickness of the linework and the hardness of the brush used to do it?

Disregarding the face, I'm a bit stunned how you could do the hair so cleanly in so little time, can you share how exactly you did this with what kind of brushes. How are you making the gradients on the shapes while keeping it clear and non blurry?

Thanks again, I'm gonna follow your advice either way and focus on edge control.

The lines in your drawing was jaggy with pixel break everywhere so i'm wondering what kind of brush did you used desu.
If you want to line, just use G-Pen, thick line is usually for western stuff so if you want to draw anime then use smaller size.
Draw on really really big canvas help too if you want those thin and sharp as hell lines that anime have.
As for brush, my style is painting so i don't know how much it can help you.

Oh I just used a regular hard brush in photoshop with pencil texture, I was trying something new but it did not go well. As for the pixelbreaks, that's because I was trying something new to speed up the lay process, but that also went very wrong.

I draw with a pretty thin brush usually, drawing most things with one line, but what often happens is that it "sticks out" through the shading because it is a single thin line, that's why I was asking if it maybe was due to the thickness or hardness of the brush. But maybe I should just go over the single line more often? I really don't know how I can fix it, but I guess I just have to try a lot of different things to find out how to fix it.

I tried again with the shading, but this time without line-art, just shapes. I focused solely on the hair and trying to keep everything clean. I feel like I've learned something, but I still need a lot of practice.

If you have an another idea about the line problem I'm all ears. Thank you very much for all your help anon.

>>3655138 Damn, that's a killer, but I see it more western style with certain anime/manga gesture choices, like the trembling mouth lines. I understood it more like having a clearly western character alongside a more manga-anime one at the same time alongside, sort of like when they do realism with cartoon characters on live action lol.

Anon, please stop with the kinds of layouts you're using. Especially in >>3654456
There's 3 basic rules to setting up panels in a comic
>neutral page layout is a 2x3 grid, with 3 rows of 2 panels
>increase or decrease size of panel, based on significance of what happens in it
>readers eyes will always cross the bar of the "T" that your gutters form, before crossing the arms

You should be avoiding layouts in >>3654456 and >>3654459 like the plague.

My account is new since I'm restarting it, so high chance it's the algorithm's doing. Only 6 followers now.
The one with R18 text on it managed to get ~30 impressions in 40 mins while the other managed to get around 100 in 20 mins. Then I deleted the R18 one and tweet out again the safe version, then it managed to get around 100 in 20 mins.

the range of panels you can have in a page are from 1-10 or so. 1 being just a full page spread, and the 10 being like, 2 rows of 3, and one row of 4.
But 10 is really pushing it, and I'd advise keeping it around 7 or 8.

Hmm, well I'm definitively happy to see someone help out someone else but I can't agree with some of the lines and suggestion you did.
The most strange are definitively the sock/stocking long black line, makes no sense. Not sure how are you going to create such a wrinkling (transversal) when the forces in place are stretching the fabric up (heel), out(calf muscle) and down (gravity) also it's pretty tight fabric, you might see some wrinkling maybe like that near the ankles but I don't see it doing something like you suggest, as if someone was pushing from the sides.
Heck I even put myself a sock to try it out and the only wrinkling you see is on the tibia-ankle upper side just because you are keeping the foot coming towards you and then is very faint, cascading of small wrinkles on that end. That said I don't have socks as long, so take it with a grain of salt. I just don't see it at the mo.

The inner strap holding the breast (let's say bikini top) definitively won't be flailing around like so, else how the breast are holding shape? Then again maybe they are bouncing, still I would expect that piece to stick the the body and stretch/follow the breast and ribcage since that's how they work in reality, they probably won't have any say on keeping the breast in check with such surface and design. I don't get why they are floating over the body like that. Unless is for appealing exaggerations.

I can only agree with the bottom of the top wrinkling which looks nice but the straps are really rigid and feel as if you were blowing air from below.

The skirt shows the same blowing issue, it should be a mixture of hanging down on the straight down leg and going up/mildly floating from the kicking leg. The underwear has too many dark lines and the form you are suggesting underneath looks oversized. Again maybe it's for exaggerating appeal reasons. But I feel it's just odd.

His mouth is definitely intended to be stretched and twisted as much as it is. With that in mind, was there a better way for me to both convey and draw that?

Well, okay, if she was free falling, then I can understand the blowing of the clothing, still, out of frame we are all guessing, but it would had to be a pretty long fall or big acceleration to cause that naturally. Of course you can exaggerate for the sake of appeal as I keep saying. The bikini thing I still say is going overboard, it's like having a lose string instead of an actual bikini top lol. But lol, not my piece so it's just my opinion. So long you do those decisions consciously, then it's fine. It's your view after all.

Go grab something similar to that axe handle and look at your hand, best in a mirror, doing that pose. Then check back the drawing. Her gesture I'm not sure how to read it, is she trying to be threatening or playful? Each breast doesn't seem to follow the same physics or are misaligned. Not sure how the hair is holding shape that way, slightly diagonally when the shirt bottom is holding shape, so there's magical wind.

>>3657119
I don't see anything glaring with it, it's simple but looks alright. The face is where I have disagreements, mainly if you use those vertical proportions, you need bigger eyes, else it looks like the face is too stretched down, if you want to have more realistic sized eyes as kind of how you do now, then the snout/nose mouth has to come up, of course since you seem to are trying to give it some lion feel maybe you want to stretch the face like so to follow cat skulls proportions, but at the moment, it's kind of an in between that bothers me a bit. The ears could use a bit more work, kind of simple and mousy looking.

The wings, you should check bird feathering patterns, I didn't had a clue myself of how they worked until a few days back when I started to study birds for the first time. Those wings, could be more believable if you check out birds anatomy first.

So the interesting point like the right foot coming forward you change it to something less appealing, the left arm feels now long and the right one in hiding short, and this one is probably the one you should had changed to make a more interesting visual story, show it back out somehow to create a better silhouette.

Lines are clean and have line weight, which is very pleasing, the face is nice. Head might be a bit overly exaggerated but I guess that's the point.

It's still possible to salvage.

Continue to complete your drawing with the lineart, your drawing would look way better with the additional details on the clothes. The sketchy style fails to show that.

I got home and I felt I needed to comment on this, because so much work was done on it. It would have been good if the torso were to follow the more natural curve and pelvis and upper torso were to fit together more tightly. I basically just moved pelvis up and to our right a little. Redrawn the crotch region because what you currently have look more like if the legs was spread apart. Take it with a grain of salt though, still might be good to find some sort of reference for this sort of pose. It would have been good if something like anatomy were to be tackled while it was just line art, because when you started coloring and shading there is a strong inertia against going back to make big changes.

I wanted to also give leave you a tiny comment on your picture, I really like the helmet you have going on there, it's really simple at the moment but I like the shape. The rest is just the eyes on 2 sections that were bothering me and maybe the bottom right one because it's a picture it has some perspective distortion due to how you took it? I tried to fix it a bit with liquify on PS and painted over the eyes for focusing the stare convergence forward.

>>3657278 I think you sketch looks cooler because of all the dynamism you had with your lines, even on the background is adding to the motion towards the character path trail. But then on the linework you lost it, became static, no more explosions or overlapping buildings crumbling near the arm or the background shapes following the walking path.

>>3657452
I don't mind the desaturated colors or face as much as the hand, it looks tiny, at least from index to small fingers and maybe the heel side of the palm too (small finger side).

>>3657472 I love that reaction image, ha ha.
>>3657497 Going too soft now, with it, needs more shadow area shapes to brake it up.

yeah, probably tried too many things at the same time. Adding some hairstrands did make it a bit better tho imo. But I think I''ll just start again, maybe a different thing, I feel bad posting the same thing so many times. Thanks though.

Hi, the guy who painted over your drawing here.
Seem like you still having trouble so i made a simple tut on how i usually do hairs.
The idea is build a base first -> add tone and gradient using underpaint brush -> Add shadow with watercolor -> Clean edges and everything with Brush. I sometime use hard eraser to do the outer edge but most of the time i just use hard brush with bg color to do it.
You can switch between watercolor and brush depend on how blurry or hard you want the part look.
You seem to have a hard time differentiate shadow and light, just use refs to help you and over time you can do it without refs.
And also don't mind the shitty wip below.

Thanks anon, really appreciate this. Already had a feeling you were using sai, it has a slight different look/feel to it, so sadly I can only "translate" your tut to photoshop. But that's ok, I wouldn't want to do something precisely in a similar fashion either way, and instead develop something of my own. Like the colors on your wip btw.

Thanks for the advice anon! Regarding the portion at the bottom of the right butt (our point of view) was that line supposed to be removed?

I dunno how I skipped over this one anon. But I really like it! You got the gesture pretty well!
There's a bit of misalignment with the armor but nothing major.
I dunno about style, but the more you know the more you will change so just do what you can at each stage, don't worry that much, nothing is set in stone.

Re-lined and re-did it from the sketch and stuck strictly to it this time, I have to say I'm a lot more content with how this one turned out.

Thanks, I wasn't intending to push that further, but the reception I've gotten from where I've posted this, has me thinking I should clean it up and push it further some.
As far as the style, I'm a big fan of harsh angular linework, but looking at this I think if I just inked this, I could probably push that to where I'd want it to be. I'd just have to, as you pointed out, fix up the misalignment.

Sorry if I'm coming across as remorse to actually push a drawing beyond the sketch phase. My project winds up outright needing the time and energy I'd spend doing that, instead, most days. (Though that'll change very shortly, at which point I may be cranking more stuff like that, out.)

Changed some things, added softer blue light (moonlight) and reduced the opacity of the background over some gray to pull some of that saturation out of it. Changed the local value of the dress to it isn't so garish and not similar to the pumpkins.

her red and blue shoes take way too much focus from everything else, as they are more saturated than the rest. Also, the platform should have the yellowish tones in highlights the figures have

Noted, thx. Why should the platform have yellow, though? Its natural color is blue rather than the tone of the skin.

that yellow doesn't look like it's their skin, it looks like there's yellow lights on their side

Making the darks lighter was really good. I think you can afford to keep the lights/highlights bright and saturated, just for nice contrast but this is good already.
Those finger extension things are spooky and unsettling, can't tell if they're artificial or natural.

Color combos still look off. Like the upper part is part of a different drawing from the bottom. I'm no good with color vocab so this is the best I can do.
