serious question. Why do people hate this? Not saying there isn't a reason. My guess is, that illustration is incredibly bland, generic, even the pose is just boring trash that feels like it was taken from an assembly line for generic space marines.

But technically, the illustration is very well rendered. There are some rushed details like the left hand holding the knife.

A good example that being technically good and mastering rendering and other techniques doesn't make you a good artist if you have no imagination/creativity and all you do is draw/paint bland, uninspiring, forgetful shit.
It seems to be something a lot of artists forget. Creativity. Are too focus on being good at painting skin, but forget about interesting topics to explore.
Moebius rarely did overly rendered shit, and his illustrations are god tier
