I’m probably not going to touch this anymore since I kind of hate the lighting, composition, and pose (it was supposed to be an homage to a scene in Drive but the lighting in that scene was mostly that film ambient). I appreciate any critique though that could hopefully help me improve in future works. Also if anyone wants to know the least efficient way to render armor, I’m pretty sure I found it doing this.

Well, I like the lighting anon, it's not epic but feels rather natural surprisingly! The pose is really bland and the proportions feel more like it's a kid. The armor, is it bone? It looks like bone, if it's metal then yeah, it's not working. But I think if you work on your gesture and anatomy, you could do really nice.

I'm not sure that makes me feel protective, more like fight or flight lol.
I guess you can work on your contrast, although your main figures read, but good darks always give good kicks and drama. I get you put the skull down there to balance the heavy placement of elements on the left side but, it's kind of going towards the outside of the piece, you might want to make it point towards the center instead, or the top "gull".

This was the reference, yeah after rendering it for 4 hours I realized the pose isn’t very dramatic without the context and awesome soundtrack of Drive. From my understanding of the character, the armor is hardened leather.

It's pretty cool. Though I would try to simplify the darker parts of the armour/ underarmour give it less clarity and make it darker. Also the waist seems a bit narrow. Nothing the liquify tool doesn't fix. Lastly I'd up your rock game. The top part of the cave is really good but the middle sides aren't rendered with a strong indication of form. Feels like you're creating depth of the tunnel by having the next closest layer of rock overlap. But it makes it look like the tunnel is getting narrower as it gets closer. Try using texture to show depth. Like the texture becomes more bunched up the farther it gets. The rock looks really organic but in my rock studies I've noticed they have quite a bit of straight vertical and horizontal lines. Try coordinating that with perspective to get more depth.

>> No.3644086

>>3643568
Another tip is to remove the torches closest to the foreground. Or dim them a bit. Or fudge the perspective so they are behind the camera. I feel like they draw too much attention away from the focal point of the character.

I haven't painted in ages and I'm not a really good painter but I was getting an odd vibe from the eyes you had, I thought of giving it a go and try a paint over. Basically the highlight there was a tad odd so bright, since you seem to have back lighting but also top lighting as secondary it did make sense a bit to have a highlight there. Still I would not give such a big highlight to the eyes, you can get away with much softer reflections.
Also I softened edges and changed some values because they were making her look old, but maybe that was your intention? Sorry if it was, my mistake.

face isn't the worst part. the dress over her thigh is kind of the best part so far lol. my recommendation is to work a bit on another part of the piece and then go back to it. some people render by part moving on to another area after one part is piece by piece, but as you progress in a piece the things you add will alter your perception of what you've done previously. there are a lot of factors at play in a piece so making sure everything works together is important. for now the face looks flat, but there are also problems in the rendering of her arms, and drawing problems in her hand. you might want to establish values in the chair, background and thighs before dialing back in on the face.

What I feel makes me improve faster with imagination drawing characters is perspective exercises, anatomy studies (geometric construction from zero or when drawing someone in a pose you try and add the anatomy bits that you see, pic related, not the greatest one, but something I try to do sometimes with the aid of anatomy books) and gesture drawing. In that order.

I would say your pic shows too much symbol drawing, also hiding the hands, the shot framing is a bit boring, among other things. But I couldn't do much better during my first years without studying so just keep it up! Go learn about those things.

I really like the vase and flowers. It is however a bit strange that the main subject seems a bit washed out compared to the background. Your initial sketch had more structure in the face, but you lost it when you started painting. Try to add more of a definite light source and it will help things read better. Even if its heavily stylized, I think the piece could gain a lot from a little more range of values and tones.

Her left side face appears to be in shadow but her left eye is brighter than her right. If you’re not going to render her body as complete as her face for focal reasons, try to use a larger brush size and still push the forms and values a bit. It’s flattening out with crisp edges that make it kind of jarring.

I actually think color is one of my weakest points, haha. I only started painting about 2 years ago, but I've been drawing for a lot longer.

What i've learned is that good color is based off of good values- once you get your values looking good and accurate, the hues are just the frosting on the cake and you can manipulate them pretty easily.

Related; did the piece on the bottom, got crit from one of my art heroes to turn it back to b/w and fix my hues, ended up with the one on the top which looks WAY better with no change in value.

I highly recommend the schoolism with dice tsutsumi/robert kondo for learning color!

Rough character concept. I'm working on a re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland, so this is an attempt at a redesign of Alice. I strayed way too far from the original here, so i'll be pulling it back towards a more pink-bow-in-hair-and-girly-dress aesthetic in future concepts. I still want to maintain a more rugged rock-chick vibe though, so that'll be challenge. Advice would be appreciated!

Worth noting that it's supposed to be pretty far away from the original, but recognizable here and there.

Sorry, I couldn't reply earlier. I live in a country where 4chan is blocked except for in a few cafes and if I use VPNs 4chan itself doesn't seem to let me post.

I get my references mainly from following photographers and models directly on instagram. rara_pinkman was the source of that one in particular (unfortunately his account seems to be gone) though the model (syul___) has it on her page too. bin.cloud is another good one for girl references. Here's the ref by the way.

Was the first post in this thread, ended up finishing the piece, though I kind of want to add a proper background, but I also don't want to wash out the entire picture with too much detail. Should I bother? Maybe just do an out of focus almost 'blurry' background with very light line work?

I'd smooth out some of the planes on the left side of her face with a softer brush. as well as add like 30 percent more rendering to the eyes and face area. right now the whole painting has the same level of detail across it, so adding extra detail in one area should draw focus to the eyes. right now my eyes are drawn the the left hand since it has such bright values. Also try to stylize the hair a bit more. Break it up into locks of hair of different values.

Last night I started sketching this Marisa for an Art Nouveau poster (Homework)
It's my first time in years working with lineart again and I was pretty happy with the "result" (I say result, even tho It's not finished).
Started thinking that looks beautiful and showed up to my gf who didn't said anything about it. I got really insecure and felt like those first years of painting where you think your art looks awesome until you left it alone for some weeks, come back and notice it was crap all along. Keep posting, looks promising. My critique would be that the colors are muddy at times (because too many are mixed together) and in some places it is not well defined because of this and overall structural issues (such as the ear and some parts of the left side of the face) What kind of surface did you paint on?

Things I've been addressing since this page:
>the flatness of the perspective

Any critique is welcome. As is any resources you'd recommend I take a look at.

Invest in a sketchbook and not lined paper, 200% will get u flamed on here lowkey

Also some nice pens and a pencil that you like, personally I love Microns and I use either woodless or mechanical pencils.

Most people are probably just gonna be like "U SUX GG RETARD"

As someone thats trying to get better at drawing in general I can throw you some tips! The lines are wonky, the eyes are pretty uneven, you did good job at his Sage Mode expression though, the hardass face. The light pen shading looks decent enough, you got potential in this style!

As for tips like, get a sketchbook, I use a Strathmore 9x12, get some nice pencils / pens, invest more time into developing your own style.
Literally just fucking draw, you wont improve at all if you don't draw.

Also heres this really shitty example of some shit I drew a while back.

I disagree a bit with >>3649346 in the sense that yeah, there's still details in the shadows but I feel you are going for chiaroscuro techniques so, you just don't want to work the shadows that much and only maybe those that are near the focal point i.e. since it's a portrait, maybe the ones from the hair or as you already did the side of the face in shadow, being subtle. The abdominals not sure they would bring much to the piece, you can see the character is buff enough from the silhouette.
If anything I disagree with the cape shape you are going for. It kind of pulls away from the image, trying to hide it or bring it in and out of shadow to keep the focus in the face might be smarter.
Pretty cool painting anyways.

Hey thanks for the tips, man. I forgot that's what it was called, but chiarosuro is definitely what I'm going for. The cape is something I'm struggling with and constantly changing now, I'm not sure what shape would best benefit the composition. This is the last thing I tried, but note that the lighting on the lower part of the cape (in front of the foreqrm) probably doesn't make sense with the rest. Maybe I should erase that?

Hmm, well making elements to aid in composition is very subjective, and it's also a subject I've barely touched but the sense I from yours is pic related. I also tried to change the cape but I don't have a good idea either on how to make it work. I just kind of tried to follow your main triangular shape or assist to point towards it. If you want it to show up below, it would do it very faintly or with value decay, as you say having it so bright doesn't makes much sense. I painted it with my mouse so sorry if the shapes are boring lol.

I just started to paint digitally on phosothop and it feels all so clumsy.
My intuos came a month ago with what someone here called 'grandma's software' (corel painter), but, at least I felt 'comfortable' with it and could draw some fun stuff. Yes, it felt 'lacking', but it felt a lot more 'dynamic' than what I'm doing with photoshop. Photoshop just feels so stiff...
Any tips on how to feel comfortable with it? Which brushes should I use?

Corel is great imo, who told you that? for PS, just stick to a basic hard round brush for a while and maybe play with its opacity or flow. Even better: find a square brush to download and try it, it might feel comfier than the round brush.

Also, try to make a finished piece, the challenges along the way will help you familiarize with the software and make you more comfortable with it. Hopefully. Worked for me.

for three years there has not been too much improvement. There is obviously some improvement, but not that much. You are still lacking some structural skills and achieving likeness.

Check out some Steve Huston head drawing lectures, one is free at youtube.

Also, your digital painting has only soft edges, there is nothing crisp in there. Try to find some balance between soft and hard edges.

Yes. A lot. You're clearly using predefined symbols, instead of recreating the figure herself. The face looks absolutely nothing like the original, the arms in the original have a very clear spread to them in perspective, making a sort of V to the angle. Yours are parallel.
>anatomy
You don't even know what that word means. "Anatomy" is more than just memorizing all the muscles and bones. It's the composition of the figure itself, and is worthless without any sense of weight, volume, or form.

But I'm honestly expecting you to dismiss what I'm saying completely, given everybody else obsessed with "anatomy" has, when someone talks to them like this.

Here's a better exercise. Look at what you're doing, think about what's lacking in it, and try to explain where you need to go from here, WITHOUT using the typical terms. So things like

Concerning the head: when doing observational studies, I would recommend avoiding invention. After all, the foremost goal is to draw what you see.
As for the 3/4's rotation: I would say, unfortunately, you've executed it poorly. In your effort to detail the anatomy, you failed to capture the gesture and establish the form first. For instance, you missed the forest for the trees on the arms; You rotated the hands some to fit the desired 3/4s view, but the negative space between the arms has actually shrunk where it explicitly should have grown.
