I want classical art on my walls but prints disgust me and I don't have a lot of money.
Basically I want a hand-painted, genuine Bouguereau on my wall for 1,5k or preferrably less.

It just so happens that the Chinese sell hand-painted copies on eBay for $100. The catch is, I have no idea what the finished product will look like.
Any of you have experience with these? I want to have some idea of how good it will look. I'm way too discerning for my budget. I could also try finding an amateur painter but if they're as good as I want them to be, they won't even pick up the brush for $1.500. Sigh.

I bought a cheap asian copy of a famous european painter for a gift and it looked just fine.

But it was a Nicolas de Stael.

why not have the accurate painting but in print, instead of some chinese guy fiddling around with unprecise brushstrokes? Just get a print on canvas if thats what grinds ur gears.

I've yet to see a print that I'd appreciate. The colors are flat and the surface is usually such that when light hits the print, you don't see the picture, just light reflecting off it.
A real painting is so much more lush and it stands out.

But yeah, incorrect strokes and generally bad paintwork is still worse. I can't stand bad art.

For that money you can purchase a professional-grade, large-format inkjet printer with 12 colors. You can make all the giclee prints you want, provided you can find appropriately high-res scans.

Either it looks nothing like the actual picture and it looks like shit or it's a print with some added handpainted touches.

Creating a decent copy is leagues easier than creating the original, and the Chinese literally farm it out. I don't doubt there are plenty of Chinese artists who could make a decent one.

Any image proof of this? I don't mean copies of Lowry or something anyone can do, but actual quality copies of Boogie, or Rubens, or Van Dyck, etc.

I've seen the work of so called master forgerers with my own eyes at a museum. They were absolute garbage. The average joe blow might not be able to see the difference, but if you have the slightest amount of training you'll be absolutely DISGUSTED by the copy. Everything is in the right place but the subtleties are lost. Everything that makes the original great? It's not there. It's like sandpaper to the eye.

I'm going to echo what >>3643461 said to a degree. Reproductions often look poor because they are not done using the same painting process, especially paintings that use glazing and underpainting. Light catches pigment underneath the top layer, creating shimmering and other optical effects that are not present in reproductions, which are mostly done wet-on-wet for the sake of time.

Fuck it, steal one, doubt anything else you’d do in your life would touch even the attempt at stealing a boogaroo.

Getting some shit Chinese knock off would bother me more than a print.

it's not just skills, boog type paintings also take a ton of time to finish. you should try shopping for more alla prima type stuff in the spirit of sargent. those are usually painted in one sitting and thus you will probably be able to find a good artist who charges peanuts relative to the quality of his art simply because he is unknown (as would be the case with me).

>> No.3645815

also op as someone who sells abstract art prints, the print quality varies tremendously. but i've seen incredibly high quality prints, which assuming you use a good file with good colors and very high res you can achieve great results with printing on canvas.

Genuinely contemptible. At least a mounted exhibition poster is a memento and has honesty. In getting a cheap chink copy you are essentially admitting that you don't have a deeper interest in what you are adorning your home with, that you don't care beyond shallow impressions (and they will be very shallow). Even if you could manage to live with it, by which I mean both the painting and the implications, you'd never be able to entertain anyone you need to woo at your home for fear that they would see you for the poseur faggot that you are.

It's the fedora tipping 4chan traditionalist equivalent of shitting out some aped color field canvasses to match the furniture.
