>What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I'm a highlord weeb. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor approved). If you'd like, post your studies there and personal work goes here.

>>3635483
Overall I like the composition, although I wasn't quite sure what the tree branch was at first. It looked almost like a stream. Add more of a light side and a dark side, and put the subtle texture of the bark in the line between them. The figure is appealing, but it could use a lot more study, especially in the folds of the cloth and the hands. The atmosphere is nice, but it's not quite reading as fog just yet.

Any resources for exaggerating body parts or changing anatomy while still "obeying" anatomy, if that makes any sense? apologies, i know this probably isn't much help, especially since i got way carried away and now made too many changes to easily talk about what i did and a lot of if not all of this is personal preference but hasdlfj

so silhouette is shape and shape is god
you want to think about everything and how it relates back to the silhouette, also understanding that inside the silhouette is several other silhouettes. the big one i always hyper focus on is the head/hair silhouette (i like it when the hair's overall shape echoes that of the underlying head/skull) and the face and how it sits inside said hair. you have to be extra careful with the bangs and how they frame the face to make sure you don't accidentally flatten both of them.

don't over complicate clothing wrinkles!!! be subtle, and much like how i like when hair echoes the underlying skull form, it tends to work out best imo when clothing silhouette echoes that of the underlying anatomy, unless you're just going for larger/baggier/specific shapes in certain types of clothing items that are intentionally changing the silhouette of the body's form. think shoulder pads in jackets, big baggy sweaters, etc.

also try to avoid parallel lines in your anatomy, even thin arms have subtle musculature that results in this really neat kinda flow that helps push the eye along through a piece

collar bones i like to think of as like, either a metal coat hanger sorta bent inwards a bit, with each side pivoting up and down on it's own when the arm raises up, sorta like the front suspension of a car if you're familiar with what those look like and how they function. tho it's a bit more complicated because the shoulder can also pivot forward and back as well as up and down. if you're skin and bones like me you can sit in front of a mirror and study yours and how they move about.

also even anime eyes are abstracting the 3d real world eyes and you gotta think about how they'd move in perspective

post 2long2 say more ;-;

Hey thanks for the write up, a lot of good insight and interesting changes which I will consider.

As for the eye perspective/simplistic anatomy I went with it on purpose as my friend wanted it to be in the style of idolmaster art/show. If you look up some of the art for these characters you'll find the eye perspectives make little to no sense in a lot of them, but thats just how it is. While I'm not going to completely copy the style I am trying to find a middle ground which is why some stuff looks a little weird, and which gap I'm now trying to bridge.

But contrary to what I've said before I think I will take note of all the feedback and trace over/redraw it to at least fix my shitty linework.

lot of ways, one way you could use curves(if the program has it) you can push specific color channels to change the whole picture so that it has the same color harmony. the other is more about the basics of painting, you are pushing too much paint around, paint more opaquely that way you a better idea of what the value of that color. this doesnt mean turn off opacity/density but if youre having the the trouble of pressing too hard to get more opaque, then you need to calibrate your pen pressure curve on the tablet itself.

stick to one style when youre coloring, study anatomy......... example is hair is cellshaded while the shirt isnt.

neck too high, when you draw the fold on the skirt u can stop with the hard V. anatomy.
first of all please study some faces and try to go off from that. Your style is very confusing.

The pose is cool, the feet that comes nearest to the right of the picture, it feel like being on a slanting floor, which is odd since the other one and the pose itself is on straight ground. The far off hand contours feel like they have too many curves on certain places and make the hand feel soft, you may want to balance that.

Your blue legs balance more naturally, which is an important point for the leg touching the ground, but I think pushing the leg lifting a bit outwards is still a fun thing to do, I would use your blues but tilt it a bit outwards just, like 20 degrees. Pretty much this. I like the foreground and middle. I would say the middle shapes you are using for people, are standing out because of not having outlines ha ha. Interesting. It should be the opposite. Consider that by contrast if your picture all has black outlines and you use a shape without it, that shape by contrast will stand out, you don't want that if they are things not inside your main selling point.

Your blue legs balance more naturally, which is an important point for the leg touching the ground, but I think pushing the leg lifting a bit outwards is still a fun thing to do, I would use your blues but tilt it a bit outwards just, like 20 degrees. Gives also a more interesting look for a female hip.

>>3640258
I think it's a bike and a girl on top, but you should define things more. Hmm, the girl does look small for that bike, but I don't even know what kind of girl age, build, you are going after lol. It's hard to tell much.

>>3640460
Taking note, I should work the legs better indeed. The pose itself of the foot doesn't scream much at me but I do think having a reference would be better. I do this ones from the top of my head to keep track of what I'm learning. If I come across some similar pose when doing studies I'll pay close attention. Thanks!

Some hard highlights on the ":I" can-badge (or is it a patch?), belt buckle, leather shoes and belt, and maybe the socks would be a small adjustments but would push it to another level of polish, as well as breaking up all the softly rendered shading.

To answer that question you present, my thinking is, no, if you don't have a plan. Okay, you know those moments when you aren't sure about the lines you are putting down or the shapes you are making or feeling of "why does this look wrong but I can't find the way to make it look right", and you just keep scratching and throwing stuff see what sticks?
Those are the moments you have to stop, because it much more efficient to do studies of what you aren't understanding, than to stumble in the dark, trying to get lucky.

Then also, polishing a piece, can take like 60 to 80% of the total time spent, it's crazy! Depending on what stage are you, is best to put that time and do 3-4 more drawings or do studies, learn about other topics. The more you actually know the faster you are anyways. Because you will make smarter decisions. Knowing something is much faster than just exploring.

So, only polish what you know in your head you can work on, and of course put the rest of the time on learning/improving the areas you don't.

Her pose is a little bit stiff, her head should be facing upwards a little because shes lying down, her neck more exposed. her shoulders are a little bit narrow it's not something you can fix at the moment since it seems like you can't do anything about it at this point, i just wanted to point that out for future reference.
the colors selection on her dress are well done on the right dakimakura, however the parka on the left as well as the shirt's shading is a little too saturated and it could be a little blue-ish, the shirt a little red-ish of course it should be less saturated in that context.
her tights are well done. you can also try playing with the color of the entire lineart and especially the lineart to of the skin (as well as any light colored object), set the skin line art it to a dark red. the bed sheet is well done. you should experiment with not just one shade of color but multiple depending on what the object is facing (reflection) and its location from the viewer for example her school uniform could have multiple colors of shade.
overall i can see that you've done well with shading the dress and clothing folds on the skirt, however try to avoid the tear drop clothing fold, it may work for some but sometimes it does not like on the skirt.

So out of curiosity I decided to do a check and draw the underlying body. It does seem to be slightly shorter than the natural 3 + 2/3 heads length for the torso but just by 1/3 of the head size (proportion I'm unconsciously following seems to be 7 + 1/2 heads). It doesn't seem to be something too bothersome at first glance but stretching the body a bit more does make it look a tad better, I tried on the side.
Doing this also allowed me also to notice the farside arm is indeed a tad shorter which was bothering me.
I might have measured things with some error so take it with a grain of salt but if you feel you can redline what you mean go ahead.

I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not. Biggest issue is how the head is far too big for the body. Have you ever tried drawing a person without hair before? Well do it. Now. Stop using hair to hide your weaknesses. Then you’ll see how glaringly dislocated the head looks from the neck and body.

I assume the third eye is meant to look fake and plastered on? But it still has to conform to the planes of the forehead. You did it well with the normal eye. I don’t see why you can’t do it for the third one. Value of the lips is too similar to the skin. Using purple for lips against orange is awful. At least make them darker.

I like it, hmm, because I usually have this trouble too, I decide to check your buildings and at least the ones closer are going to a different horizon. I rotated your image to get a leveled horizon since that's the way to best spot those issues, so I would say, rotate your drawing from time to time when you doing tilted scene shots just in case. That usually helps me.

You’re not being retarded. The way that anon put it was confusing too. Your third drawing is somewhat more appealing because you show more variance and vibrancy in skin tone. Whereas before, you used gray for shadows on white clothing (making it look muddy and lifeless) and one-note with shading on the skin. As if you shifted the base skin tone down a few values.

But honestly, you should be focusing more on your anatomy, not rendering. That’s the biggest issue here.

You're lacking lineweight knowledge. Frankly, pen stabilizer is just gonna make it worse at your level, because it makes the lines too mechanic. Boys, I'm in a hugeass fucking pickle right now and I'm sure some of you artfags could help me out.

I've seen this painting in a british school a week ago, it was of a headmaster. Doesn't matter much, but the thing is, I thought I'd taken a picture of it because it was so amazing, and I didn't. It had a very peculiar style to it, but it was also something I kinda recognized (i.e. wasn't unique), but I obviously can't really google it because it just comes up with weird 20th century paintings.

It was a painting (might've been digital art print, idk), semi-realistic, and like a "regular" painting to the first glance. From the close up, it was a mix of vector-art style colorization and painting. Kinda like pic related, but "more painting-like".

I know it's not much to start out with but if anyone could tell me the name of this style, he would be a fucking hero. I'd like to study and learn this technique sooo much but I just can't find anything about it.

Utilize line weight more. Important things should have thicker lines, give the background much thinner lines. That would be my primary complaint. The lines around characters are the same width as those around your trees, so they don't pop out enough, plus it makes everything look extremely flat. I see some line weight, but you need to use it more to distinguish foreground and background, as well as important characters.
Also, maybe ease up on the black. Heavy ink has a place, but you're using black for the empty space and that makes lines harder to distinguish from the background.

Also just to add because I'm bad at explaining things. Basically the essential problem is that its hard as fuck to tell what's going on in your panels. The bottom right for example (and really the entire bottom in general) I have absolutely no idea what's going on. I see him hopping about, but I can barely see where he is. On the bottom panel I thought he was a tree at first until I looked deeper. This is caused by the aforementioned problems, but there's just not a lot of focus in general.
You just really gotta make your subject pop more.

Thanks. If you want, the way I have the files set up, I could give you a raw png of the linework isolated.
I know what you're talking about and I'm torn on how much I should take away from what you're saying, because the "flatness" and uniform inking at least are intentional. I'm going to push the line weight further, at the absolute least, since I do like thick lines and I've always known I've just been hesitant to push mine. I'm unsure of how to handle the balancing of blacks in it, too, since I'm basically only using 3 tones, and not using copious amounts of black, tends to leave things looking weird, with just white backgrounds.

Talking to a friend about all this, I'm thinking at the very least, I'll be increasing the thickness of the characters, and unifying the background's thickness to "small" since the way I handle overlapping lines (I add small gaps on most things, but leave the borders untouched, generally speaking) will likely avoid things becoming muddy. This proof of concept he did certainly cements I need to improve the clarity.

Feel free to read through the comic at your leisure, and leave me some criticism here or anywhere I'd see it. Stuff like this is important, especially since this is primarily about readability.

You're definitely right. Line weight has been an ongoing problem I've been trying and failing to rectify.

I'm looking to get some feedback on this drawing. I also posted this one on the Improvement Thread but I'm not entirely sure how this place works.

I want to start doing more backgrounds too, but I'm still rather new to it

The characters look ok, but they feel like floating rather than walking on a surface.
You can add lot more shadow in the picture as well, its a sunny day there are going to be a lot of shade and you forgot to draw whatever is behind that tree, is it a wall, or is it something you forgot to draw?
Anyway welcome to /ic/

Ah, I see! Yea, I'll try to add more shadows to the ground then and see how it works. I previously added the character's shadows but I added it on the color layer instead of the shade layer, which is set to multiply, so I think they disappeared a bit.

Yea, there's a building behind the tree. There's a line of buildings going alongside the coast and it stops right on this little patch of grass with the tree. Maybe I should've added a bit more shadows to it to make it more clear? Or maybe some brick textures?

Thanks for the feedback! I very much appreciate it!

My dream Is to make a Game, Manga and Visual Novel. Unfortunately the area I was born didnt really foster too much in the way of creativity. Im currently working some construction jobs so I can pay for my college. What do you guys suggest I study for a unique art style? Keep in mind my current capacity is stick figures.
