IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Previous Thread >>3627870

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead
2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance when you haven't even started

TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

Well, the Loomis way of using a circle is a tool for you to construct something, having a simple volume/shape as a guide. Thing is, real skulls don't fit well inside a circle, they are more like a box with tapered corners and front/back side. Also the skull is more deep than wide. Any skull is different though, so you have some room to play around with the shape.
Just, don't get too caught with the underlying construction and focus more on looking at actual skulls.

But to fix your current issue, add more mass towards the backside if you use a circle from the side view. Probably an ellipse would fit better from that angle.

While not necessarily an exercise in fundamentals, it'll definitely facilitate the process when you start getting more into them since you'll probably be ghosting your linework, or trying to get your lines done in one single stroke.. Clean and confident strokes are valuable and show that every line you do is well thought out and intentional, the ideal transition from intangible image from the mind onto the physical canvas. Keep at it, anon.

Try limiting yourself on the amount of values you use and start to progressively use more if you can accurately identify and place them. Next time, limit yourself to just using 4 or 5 values including the canvas color. Also, try measuring the distance or relation of one facial feature to the other with comparative measurement in the form of lines. If you look at your reference image and try drawing straight lines around the shapes of the features to another feature, you'll notice the negative space creates a distinct shape. Your goal is to create the same negative space of that shape and should help you keep your work as accurate to the source as possible.

The only way to do this is to spend a lot of time studying and memorizing male and female anatomy. You need to know how the forms are created under the skin in order to draw them correctly consistently. You don't necessarily need to actually know what each and every muscle is called, but knowing them makes them easier to search for and therefore study.

I'm working through Robertson's HtD but I don't think he addresses this specific question. Let's say in the left drawing that lines A and B are the edges of a road on the ground and the viewer is standing in the middle of the road looking straight ahead. Then the line C that is perpendicular to A and B and cuts the road straight across is just parallel to the horizon line. But in the right diagram, where we're viewing the road from a different angle, how would I construct the equivalent of line C from the left diagram? Basically if I have a vanishing point and some parallel lines in the same plane converging to that point, how do I find a line in that same plane perpendicular to those parallel lines?

Draw everything, don't focus on one thing. Pick random poses and draw them. Then pick random animals and draw them. Then maybe you watched some movie/series/anime and found a character that looks interesting. Draw them.

There's no one path like "draw X, then Y and then you'll get good". No, everything you draw will make you better as long as you push yourself and don't waste time drawing without learning.

>Pick another vanishing point where you want
That doesn't seem correct though. Picking another vanishing point at random can lead to lines that are obviously crooked. You can see here that line C is roughly the (well, a) line that cuts the road made by A and B horizontally, while the other two lines are incorrect, especially the rightmost of the three attempts. So there should be a way to construct C exactly rather than just eyeballing it.

That's because you've picked the second vanishing point too close in two cases, which looks like very distorted photo of object too close to the camera. (But still valid! This CAN be a perpendicular to your two lines)

Usually vanishing points are far from each other. The closer they're to each other, the more distorted the image appears. Pretty sure there's something about this in either Robertson or "Perspective Made Easy". As far as I know there's no one true way to pick a distance between vanishing points to make things look right. It's a matter of intuition and what looks good.

Hmm, okay I feel what you want to know is not the same as what you are asking.

What I think you are asking is if you rotate your viewing point from one position to another, like if you war watching a cube straight on and then look at it from an angle, how do I find the new vanishing points? Well, that's where you use diagonal points and rotation angles. Scott covers that a bit rushed but some other books go a bit more int depth. It's basically trigonometry, look for cones of view and such.

Now, your question, Line C goes to a vanishing point but due to how 1PP are handle, that VP is basically at infinite distance on the horizon, so it's effectively parallel to it. If you move lines A/B to a vanishing point on the side, C would still go to infinite because those are the rules of 1PP, so it would still be parallel to the horizon. That's why on 1PP stuff starts to look weird when you look at them from outside the center.

You need to slow down how fast you're drawing those lines. Lock your wrist, use your elbow or shoulder. Ghost the lines first before starting the 8 stroke pass.

Frayed edges are caused by drawing too quickly. Uneven strokes are caused by going too slowly. You're also starting each stroke at a different location, which means you are going too fast and still have poor line control (because of your speed).

6 months of on/off practice with basic line fundies should have given you near perfect straights at least. So really, SLOOOOOOOW DOOOOOOOWN.

How bad is it to use real photos of people in different poses as reference for your comic style drawings?

There is never ever anything wrong with using reference. If you want, use reference for the rest of your life, the goal of drawing from imagination has to be your own goal, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Drawing from imagination is hard, there's no reason you have to be able to do that to create your art. In fact, I'd say using reference correctly, to create and design pieces is a skill in itself.

Thanks Anon, this calms me greatly. I looked up "drawing with references" and people said you should never use them, even if you try to draw something like the empire state building. I know how the building looks, but also I don't really know how it looks. Same with the anatomy.

Was thinking about getting myself one of these anatomy dolls, maybe that could also help.

My sole goal currently is being able to draw a picture that someone would want to fap to so anatomy is my #1 priority.

I think this is the right idea, and I think this is the idea that Robertson talks about on pages 24 and 25. If two vanishing points make an angle of 90 degrees with the station point (the point where the viewer is considered simply as a point in the 2D space of the page) then the two sets of lines that converge to those vanishing points are perpendicular. But that leaves the question of how exactly you know where the station point is. I don't think there's a principled reason for assuming that the station point is right at the end of line B like you do. I guess if you set up your cone of vision before you start drawing then you'll know where it is? I'm still pretty new to this stuff. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can verify.

mark your points and then pick 1 of them and place it where you want that one to be moved too, then draw a line between them to the horizon line to get a new measuring VP, then from that VP back to the other point you didn't select and where they cross with your lines coming from the 1ppVP is where the new point is maintaining the original size in perspective.

if you want to rotate the other one around the vp you just whip out the compass and draw some circles and gg

the right diagram you can literally draw whatever you like because its a separate diagram and you have nothing to refer too, it has no scale information or anything

Oh shit, so if you draw any circle and decide that you want that circle to represent, say, a 60 degree cone of vision, then that uniquely fixes your station point? Just do you what you did there and find the unique point so that it's 30 degrees from that point to the left side of the COV and 30 degrees to the right. That makes everything way easier if I'm understanding this right.

So in theory if you had a massive piece of paper, you could draw a big circle that encompassed the whole area for your picture, find the unique station point (once you decide that the circle is, say, a 60 degree COV) and then you can start finding vanishing points at any angle from there. Usually your vanishing points and station point will be way off the page, but if I'm understanding the principle then I'm happy.

Yes, generally art is just a framed box(picture) inside of the cone of vision but can be outside of it too although it would get super distorted.
The station point is where the viewers vision is, the reason it is under the picture is because the math works out the same that way, so say you were 6foot away from the pictureplane with a pendulum from between your eyes to the center of vision on the picture plane(the 1pp in 1pp) and dropped the pendulum, it would fall 90degrees down in an arc to 6foot below.

>>3641283
the reason it looks a bit fucky is because trying to constrain the same size into the new A and B you created, in general you would just be like "i wanna move this here" then measure it up like that, draw the straight line, then from the new points (a2/b2) draw to the VP finding the new perspective

So I watched a snippet of a Cesar Santos drawing vid and I tried a very quick charcoal sphere drawing to see how a dry sponge works blending.
Here’s the result.
The first I took my time getting the contour of the sphere correct before anything else and from there used graphite pencil and charcoal and a tortillion, the second I didn’t really care about the shape of the sphere so much, just wanted to test out blending with the sponge like Santos seems to do..
Anyway, just something I wanted to show.
Also was seeing if the cast shadow looked proper in the second one.
P.s. regretted not taking the time in the 2nd one to get the contour right......why would I not take the opportunity to draw correctly when I have the chance duh!

Most artists of any merit have done more life drawing than one would think and and it shows in their work. How are you going to render drapery if you don't know what it looks like? Or light, or people that don't look like you've never drawn a real person before? Architecture, water, trees. Go outside and draw. You'll improve in ways you can't even comprehend right now. Ideas come to you by being presented with novel situations that don't come trying to imagine.

It's pretty much measure, block in, measure again, find an appealing way to represent form and value. Construct if necessary. Steal from other artists. Look at the end goal as putting down accurate enough information to be able to draw it from a different angle, or in different light, or be able to make a more aesthetic substitution. People on here don't even know what fashion is, much less how to draw it.

Yeah, look at how Vilppu does gesture and copy that. He has a lot of videos on youtube, they're easy to find.
His system is basically to draw a wireframe of the figure, using lines that go through and around the form. It sometimes involves drawing direct contour lines but that's somewhat discouraged. His method allows you to establish the volume and orientation of the major forms of the figure in a very small number of strokes.
What you're doing now is basically just tracing the contour outline of the figure. The ultimate point of a gesture drawing is just to serve as a scaffolding for a more developed figure drawing, so if you feel the contour method works for you then that's fine, but I see a couple potential disadvantages to it. The first is that it's more difficult to show subtle changes in orientation (rotation in space) using contours alone (look at the right legs you drew in the top row, viewed in isolation from the rest of the body, and compare them to the corresponding legs in the reference photos). By using wrapping lines, going around the form like it's a cylinder, you can more clearly express how everything is arranged. Also the contour method can sometimes lead to more static poses because it doesn't encourage you to think about the internal flow of the figure. Finally the contour lines close off your forms at the very first stage of the drawing, while the wireframe method encourages you to leave things more open and ambiguous in the beginning, giving you more opportunity to move and scale forms as the drawing develops. Basically just look up some of Vilppu's gesture videos and see which approach makes more sense to you.
As far as actual mechanics go. I would recommend drawing very slowly, even taking some time between strokes to stop and think about where you want your next line to go. I think it's really unfortunate that gesture drawing is so closely with short timed exercises, 1 minute poses, 2 minute poses, etc. (cont below)

A gesture drawing isn't supposed to be a record of your instantaneous impression of a figure, but it's supposed to be a rational plan, like an engineer's schematic, that guides you in the development of your drawing. Like Vilppu says, it doesn't have to be precise, but it does have to be deliberate.
I would recommend taking a very soft pencil and drawing slowly and lightly until you get the hang of it, but of course once you're experienced you can draw them however you want.
One thing to watch out for in gesture drawings is proportions. Because it's supposed to be a less precise phase of the drawing, it's easy to let things get out of hand. Some of your drawings have giant feet, legs too small, etc. This is again something you'll do a lot better on by drawing more slowly.

Should I spend money on a fountain pen or something simliar? Are there any trusted brands or recommended price ranges?
I ruined a decent sketch a few days ago likely from a cheap pen. (or maybe I just need to get good at long, continuous linework, take your pick) I saw a video of a fountain pen in use and noted how smooth and uniformly thick the lines were. I eventually plan on getting a drawing tablet, should I just save my money until then and practise pencil and charcoal sketches?

Definitely get a cheap fountain pen if you want to try one. Like a $10-$20 one. Fountain pens can be touchy and not everyone likes them.

These need waaaay more work. I think its the style and the line weight that gives this an uncanny vibe.
Your drawings are like pic related.
Need better understanding in contouring.
I think its the way you also put on your eyes on the face and the wrinkles/detail
Its a slow process and i'm sure you'll get there.

These threads are troll threads.

He starts these threads to put people off drawing by using ad-hominem instead of constructive criticism.
He will try to pass off his ad-hominem as "help" and "advice" which many people will believe for some reason.

I do not know why people can not see how they are getting trolled by these threads whenever the people making the remarks give no constructive criticism.

If someone is going on about "how shit this is" or "yUo suck because you are not nipponese" then it's not constructive criticism and should not be taken on board. Constructive criticism which is actual advice would be something like "This part that goes across is out of balance, it would need to be".... etc or something like that not "OMG you are so awful at drawing you will never work for konami because you can't even draw a ball with a line in the proper way that the nips do it, just give up now because you are wasting time. stop sukcing and get better"

Can you see how you are all getting trolled?
