The trend in gallery art for the past 40 years or so has tended towards marketing based entirely on identity. It got to the point where "female serbian coalminer amputee" was the entire focus of any given art show. It looks like it's finally trickled into commercial art, well past the sell-by date.

Combine that with more aggressive identity politics that seek to erase individual identity through forced association and people who have absolutely nothing of value to say about anything and you end up with individuals that define themselves entirely by which groups they belong to and how much they live the stereotype.

Personal experience has shown me that they're oversocialized and slightly autistic. Everything has to fit into a box or they get pooper peeved. It seems like they're unable to derive meaning from what they do, probably because it would kill them, and instead focus entirely on what they are and how they appear to others. It's validation seeking without the threat of alienation; "LOOK HOW [group] I AM !" has no cost, at least compared to exploring more contentious opinions and deep, dark fantasies critical of individual/group relations. Also, talent. It's hard to define yourself by what you do when you're shit at it.

They missed the point of the exploration into identity by stopping before their individual relationship with it and, lacking talent, are unable to get attention for anything else. Compare their work with what morally conflicted and self-loathing homosexuals on the DL have churned out over the past thousand years. Or all the impressionists with tomahawk wounds.
