Give it to me straight, /ic/; can artwork be objectively bad?

>> No.3612720

>>3612718
yes, i dont know why anyone would argue against it

>> No.3612830

Yes, but I’m not sure what that objective standard is.

All I know is shit like OP makes me suffer to look at. Maybe that was the goal of the artist? But if a video game was designed to nauseate and confuse and frustrate, that doesn’t make it a good game when the player is nauseated and confused and frustrated.

When something doesn't look as the original artist intended it, it's a flaw. Or put in a different way, when we can spot obvious errors in form and the whole piece is maybe hard to understand but the artist didn't want it that way. The best example of the opposite would be Piccasso, who drew what I'd consider shit but it had a meaning and the randomness of it was on purpose. I dunno how else to say it

>>3613024
Here I doubt the artist made the stylistic choice to represent legs that way for some hidden purpose. He simply was bad at drawing a running gesture.

Simply put, if you are good to the point that you can do realism, you can make anything and it won't be bad.
That's the whole point as to why anyone gave a shit about picasso and took him seriously, he could paint in realism but he decided to do the weird shit to say something.

Most people that do "quirky" "styles" just don't know how to draw and lie to themselves

Music, acting, writing are in the wrong place.
Music has a tonne of value. It gives a fuckton amount of emotion by itself, and not limited to that of course- as seen in movies, shows, and dramas. Writing takes a lot of effort, in fact, as far as I can see, it's harder than visual arts in a way since the only tool you have is words. Same goes for acting- effort is put in to become the character and successfully convey intended things to audiences. Whoever wrote this needs to do one of these things in their life, and/or be less cynical. Seems subjective fuck.

You just know a STEMlord made this. If you're talking about ART, it's literally the opposite, flip it upside down. All of those are arts, sure, but the more mechanical/technical it is, the further it is from art I think. Animation, designs, cartography, architecture... those are all very methodical and can be emulated by anyone; the uniqueness, the expression of the self is at a minimal while still being art.

Writing, doing music, performing at a theatre and coming up with wacky fashion design choices to express your true self, those are the most pure arts I think.
For illustration it depends on your approach. Once I read here that an artist and a craftsman are different things, or something like that. There's people drawing to truly produce new art, and those others merely using techniques to try to emulate reality as mathematically accurate as possible like a living camera and those aren't really doing art.

OP image is Guernica by Picasso and it is very much so intended to express suffering, pain and confusion as it depicts bombing of a city.

Yes and No; Both

Clearly certain images impart specific ideas and feelings, such is the reason art has grown to where it is today. 'Objective' generally points towards materialistic positions, where as 'Subjective' is the realm of mind, idea and imagination. In this way, Art is both subjective and objective; being as such, you can have art be objectively a pile of burning garbage, of which simultaneously expresses the idea of Nirvana. These two pathways flow into each other, creating a benevolent energy that has brought Art to the present moment.

there are two things that an artwork can adhere to: personal taste and instituted standards (aka personal tastes of some elite, with reasoning applied)

so no they can't be objectively bad, they can just not follow the tastes
however it doesn't mean that we can let it off the hook, since we all follow our own tastes as living organisms, so everyone who doesn't agree with us need to be converted or suppressed (or we need to let ourselves be convinced by someone else that their standards are worth adhering to)
