He's copying photographs. Boring, tedious, much easier to do than you realize.

The goal of the artist isn't to great a 1:1 copy of what he sees, but to editorialize; to decide what it is important and emphasize it, and what is dross and delete it, so that you, the viewer, are presented with a statement rather than just a picture.

As a child I could take ANY photo and photorealisticly reproduce it except for perfect values but I came close. That was without ANY teaching or guidance at all.
Now that I am learning to paint with oils I need to actually learn how to draw from life.

if you don't see that this is also copied from a photo, you are artistically blind.
a couple of well executed "expressionist" brush strokes does not make thiss work a good painting.

another good one for the list is Phil Hale, who might be my favorite figurative artist.
this painting is from his series "Life wants to Live." if this is too abstract for you, you might want to check out "Johnny Badhair" or just his other work in general.

i can't be the only one thinking that brush simulation like that is just sickening and ugly as fuck. i'm a painter and i work with digital illustration programs as well, but wouldn't even think about trying to give a photobashed, stale copy illustration a "brush" finishing look. miss me with that shit.
