cats have been sitting on it for the last 2 days. Bogie's been licking his junk on it like it's his job. Was playing the COD beta with my hands on it for a bunch of the weekend too. Had thecomputer sitting on it. Ate a KFC famous bowl on it. And when you do mechanical pencil on canvas panel it gets all schmeary from any contact.

It all gets covered in gesso and shit next so all of Bogie's crotch ooze will be forever immortalized in it until the next fire destroys it probably.

This is a sketch that I'm pretty comfortable with and am about to start working on the final. The one thing I've been struggling with is whether or not this looks like Jon Snow. Is the likeness good enough to successfully recognize him? Like - at a glance, does this look like him? It's hard to capture his sort of sad-boy look

Can you also tell that the backdrop is the north? It's a simplified / stylized version of it, but I was hoping the most recognizable locations (Winterfell, the Dreadfort, the Wall, etc.) are enough for it to read as the North.

This but it's not as bad as being nothing like him. He definitely has some jon snow likeness to him, but there are enough things off that he looks like a different person, i dont know what specifically though. and no sorry, the background just looks like a generic bunch of houses and trees and shit. redesign your composition to have jon closer to it all, so you can draw the building biggers and maybe add flags and banners.

I don't often tell people to draw boxes, but in your case you gotta draw boxes, and read a perspective book.
Perspective is at the very base of all drawn art (unless your name is Jackson Pollock), and yours doesn't have a single thing drawn in 3d.

Here's something I finally decided to linework, fixed up some stuff from an /ic/ redline, gonna color too, but I have a few questions: I'm thinking of adding her whole sword, and I dunno if the composition looks better with the whole sword and her pushed into a corner, or more like the original drawing where the sword is cut off but she's centered and fills the page. If I did the first I might try like a bloody trail/splatter behind the sword as a background element.

Also, If I draw the whiole sword, how the fuck do I do the perspective? It's supposed to be like "Cloud's Buster Sword" without the holes according to the character's creator, but the angle on the tip of the blade is messing me up. Any tips? I tried to figure it out on the right to no avail.

yes, kind of.
but notice how degas, at least in this painting, uses an almost monochromatic background, with a cold tone, blurred forms and "messy" brush strokes, while the figure in the front is really well defined, with bright and well defined colors and strokes, and the attention goes first to the front.
in anons painting i feel almost the opposite, like if the background is coming in through the window panes into the interior, and sits almost behind the figures.

and i'm not saying that is bad, just asking.

I'm learning to use Copics, so I made a quick practice piece and I'm slowly rendering it. Am I doing well with these textures? The shoulder armor is supposed to be like a boiled leather I suppose. The light source isn't super strong.

It's my current DnD character.

(The pose and armor is shamelessly stolen, though the inking and such is me, so I can't take credit for any of that. The focus was on the Copic use.)

With my limited knowledge, the only thing to really get less messy with this I'm assuming kind of quick flow sketchy-ness you got going on is to do it a lot.

Maybe take it outside and work on some life drawing in this style to get the mileage.

Attached is how I would proceed. A lot of your gradients are 'pillow shaded', meaning you're not really applying the values in relation to an established light source. Consider leaving a rimlight on the edge where you just let the paper show through, and go in a establish your value groups 1 value at a time.

not gonna lie i dont really see the point in going into so much detail for the skeleton of the figure if your whole plan was to flesh it out from the beginning. a much more simple frame wouldve worked, and it helps to focus more on gesture in that stage and work out the kinks in proportions/anatomy a bit later in the process.

the perspective doesnt match up. the head is turned slightly more than the body with no sign of it showing in the neck. his left eye shouls be showing more and his nose should be a pyramid not a triangle.

the colours are good but it could use more range of values, lighter highlights and darker skin tones. he looks too smooth for the type of character he is, there should be splotches, hair and marks over his skin.

its a good concept though, the shapes work well

Off the top of my head, the neck having no detail at all gives the impression that her head got cracked sideways by a mortal kombat finisher move. Ear is too high up. Her face is all kinds of fucked up. The chin and ear look like you wanted to attempt a straight on side shot, but the eyes want to be 3/4ths looking to the camera, but the shoulder makes her want to be twisting away. It's all over the place. She also has a tremendous overbite. The connecting point on her chin and bottom lip should not be that far apart. Different anon but. Dude seriously. You're the one who's in the wrong here. He gave you an honest, to the point crit and you're complaining? You're just the worst.

>It ain’t that deep.
>I’m just here to have a good time with my art

Don't ask for critique if you can't take it. You should be really thankful that somebody would take the time to analyse your amateur drawing and give you proper feedback. Be honest with yourself. Are you really complaining because you were expecting a more positive crit or because of the other anon used swear words? Either way, you're clearly in the wrong here. There was literally NOTHING that I could point to in the original crit that should offend you in any way.

Anyways. You're the "emotional" one. You're the one acting like an entitled 15 yo. Go to the beginner thread and stop being a namefag. It hurts my eyes to read your comments.

there was no attitude, and really still isn't. Learn how to actually take criticism. I was genuinely trying to help you and I post crits in /beg/ a lot, to people who are significantly more grateful than your entitled ass. You asked for a crit and got one. But it was "too meen :(((" and now you refuse to actually own up to it because people outside of your facebook friend list know that it looks like shit and didn't pat you on the back so you'd rather try to tear me down even though everything I've said is true. I don't know what else to tell you since you were clearly here for an ego stroke and you're upset you didn't get it.

Thanks bud. I agree, dogmatism is definitely a thing in the atelier circles.

Then again, when I think of dogmatism I think of some instructor being all "you can't even buy oils until your charcoal work is immaculate". I skipped some steps on my own, but I can tell that it shows in my work. It seems like the more time I spend on mind-numbing exercises, the more easily everything else comes to me. Like that flower, I didn't bother to measure out the glass or anything, I just humped it all onto the page and it came out way better than expected. Probably because I've spent 200+ hours on casts.

The thumb's nail looks a bit angled away. Try making more of it visible from the pov.
Also, starting from the wrist and upwards should be much wider than the rest of the arm.

>>3605835
The scene slightly confuses me. The bike appears to be moving as can be seen from the exhaust and rotating wheels, but the rest of the bike seems to lack the motion blur. If she's just revving it up, the exhaust shouldn't extend so far. If she's skidding it, there should be an indication on the street (such as a dust cloud), and the exhaust should be pointing to the side.
tl;dr: The art isn't bad, but the action scene isn't really set up well. Needs work.

>>3605871
Cool art, but the neck and ear seem to be lacking in shading detail, like they're illuminated alone for some reason, making them seem flat. Add a few subtle gradients like you did to the face, and it should be golden.

Like the overall silhouette but the palette you are using makes the body look lifeless and the strokes used, feel like she is wearing some tight full body suit, like there's wrinkles. It's a bit messing with my mind lol. Interesting though.

Hands feel smallish for his head. The forms/volumes you use to mark the placement of what I think would be trees are repetitive and boring, but maybe are just placeholders. I would still go for something a bit more interesting even if just being indications of volume and mass.

I don't see how you say the gecko conflicts as a focal point, not OP btw. But for the color scheme the gecko clearly fades with the rest of the scene, even being in the foreground. If anything the girl and the tree are in a tug of war, but only because of shape and size, being so similar. I would put the tree away, behind the girl.
I would probably say bring a different color scheme for the girl to stand out, but white does make her stand as a thumbnail, not so much up close due to a same green shade, maybe warm those colors up.

Treat what you have now as more of a guide, then start thinking like a painter going forward. Get rid of most of your linework by painting over it, and use brushes with pressure set to opacity. Think about edge control with your marks instead of the binary this is the flat light shape, this is the flat shadow, etc.

Texture brushes are a must. Play around with them to find ones you like. You can get away with 90% or more of your painting using a chalky texture brush that has good coverage. At a normal painting size its texture do its thing. You can shrink it way down and use it for fine lines and details. You can enlarge it to the point it seems unreasonable, and paint lightly on a separate layer to incorporate some macro textures. You can adjust the opacity of this layer, or the blending mode, and then on another opaque layer on top do some more painting.

A lot of it is playing around and experimenting, seeing what happy accidents occur, then reinforcing them. You'll need to spend time zoomed in defining your tiny forms, thinking about convex and concave surfaces, the direction of your light sources, etc.

Try not to go overboard too. Push the textures in the focal points and along the terminator. It's good to even paint over and remove some texture in areas that don't need it. Zoom out often and make sure you're improving the piece and not destroying the read of the big value shapes.

Do studies of alligators, rocks, etc and apply what you learn. Find artists on artstation doing paintings similar to what you want and so small focused studies of portions of their work.

Pic related is a 10min proof of concept. You'd obviously want to spend more time than that building the right texture you want and cleaning it up. Save texture for after everything is laid down.

When you post the final, shrinking the image then applying a sharpen filter to the focal points will make the textures look better.

If you find that to be too dark for light skin, then I think you gotten too used to light skinned characters being pure white in manga.
Her skin right now matches the mid tone of the picture. Also fair skin can be very dark if the person is placed in a dimly light area.

I feel like I'm fucking up somewhere but I can't quite put my finger on it, feed my back pls. First time really trying to make my digital stuff look more traditional, but what I'm worried about right now is the colors/construction/anatomy/whatever.

Also, should I make him look younger or push the older look instead? my mind is still between both and that's bad. Whatever I go for will affect the rest of the painting, like the hair, so I'd really like to read your opinions first.

This is nice, anon. The first thing I notice is that it seems like you stopped rendering the face from the bottom of the nose/ears down. See how the flesh tone is cooler, lighter and greyer from the bottom of the maxilla down to the neck and traps? You need to bring the warmer, darker colors from the top half of the head down to match the rest of your skin tones, simply put. You'll have something pretty nice if you do that, imo. Other things I would mention are the shadow of the cape being too dark, and the harsh shadow on his left (our right) brow bone. Think about how the brow bone (suprorbital ridge) follows the curve of the eye socket (orbit). It's in the name - supraorbital, or above the orbit. So that plane will follow encompass his actual eyebrow more, along with that one stroke being softened substantially, but you probably know that. Hope this helps, and keep it up.

This is absolutely a WIP still and everything that's not the face still needs to be worked on, like the neck, but I agree with everything you've pointed out. I got carried away rendering the face but I'll definitely bring those tones to the rest of the painting. I hadn't even considered thinking about the brow bone and how those planes would actually work, really solid advice there, thanks a lot for the feedback!

I always liked very high detail drawings like this, I would like it if you took it further and added more eye candy in the form of legible writing on the book spines or interesting interactions between the clutter (such as the ink vial being spilled over one of the rolled open canvas, or a corner of the rug being turned up a bit by the step ladder being pushed against it).

Is there certain limit to how much and for how long my will can be attached to a drawing. No problem, and I just meant for your future drawings is all, I certainly wouldn't suggest anything else be done to the one you posted. The progression of your work in my mind or at least the suggestion I was trying to visualize is something akin to those old "I Spy" books, where all these miniature objects play with each other in interesting ways that absorbs you in the image for a long while.

The biggest problem is that you pushed the neck off the mid line to the right, causing you to further damage the pose by move the right shoulder even farther, dislocating it.
Other than that, don't exaggerate the small bumps at the elbows and knees so much.
You also made the top curve of the foot end to suddenly.

switch to charcoal and work a little bigger. All-around, it's a better medium than graphite for the kind of work you're trying to achieve.

Start studying bridgman and going to life drawing sessions. Otherwise, draw from a mirror. You're approaching the point where you've gained all you can from copying photos and you'll start developing bad habits if you keep it up.

Surely you see that the business of the brushstrokes looks amateurish and even if deliberate, detracts from the more obviously deliberate business of strokes on the figure. However, knowing you, I feel like it was a conscious decision and I'm curious what you were thinking.

The latter. Its all blened and soft to death. Try to get the appearance of a soft edge while only using hard lines/strokes. Its less about blending and more about chunking/wedging shapes of subtle value shift. A good painting does need some smooth gradation, but way less than you're employing. Keep at it though.
