how to do actually meaningful art..

Draw something in a way that is genuinely meaningful to you.

Whether it's meaningful to other people... well, that's something that will have to be seen.

But if something is meaningful and true to you, and you feel it when you look at it, then you've made meaningful art.

That honestly explains nothing, do it again but in simpler and more direct words, please.

create weird rules that you obsessively care about and then build what you do around breaking them?

Granted I'm some kind of inverted-narcissist or masochist so I just build everything around self-abuse and lore-building and substance dependency and anxiety and stuff where the conversation piece supplements the shitty memes that don't stand on their own technical merit.

People make art where they're emotionally blocked, without exception. A certain thing you don't even allow yourself to think; all the art comes from there.

I'll try.

I've had a crippling amount of anxiety about freehand drawing since I was 18. I didn't produce anything for 10 years because I was too fucked up about how I abandoned drawing, was nervous that I wouldn't be able to draw well, would be embarrassed, etc if I tried and "failed."

I got back into artistic production by doing graphite transfer to canvas paintings of goddamn 4chan memes, where I didn't have to stress about drawing. Pic related is about this. It's essentially the first of the series where I didn't trace, grid, or obsess about replicating proportions. Done over a bunch of japanese scribbling initials and stuff. It was done in a "zone of emotion" and is of a subject that is acting out the source of the emotion over the reason why I have the emotion (I kind of see over-focus on hand drawing as the artist circlejerking about their basic art skills, like they think it's what makes them special or what puts their name on the piece).

Like it's super meaningful to me. It's one of my favorite of my memes. It was a marker and commentary about where I was and the shift in my focus and it was like I was dumping 11 years of anxiety into it. Made me happy to be alive.

I get what you're talking about with building lore and stuff. Your shitty art becomes better when you use a bunch of paragraphs to shill it
