>What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I'm a highlord weeb. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor approved). If you'd like, post your studies there and personal work goes here.

boob closest to the camera looks a bit out of place, features are a bit misplaced, hand is terrible, the hidden leg is done inelegantly good sense of lighting, nice colour scheme especially with those roses in there, and the red chinese dress hair, all works together in a very cute way, and um i guess sexy butt and pencil thin waist. so all in all successful but could be a little bit tighter

edited for less retarded:

features of the face are a bit misplaced, hand is terrible, the hidden leg is done inelegantly(doesn't really look like it'd fit under there and it does look like there's a hole in the sheet, not some kind of foldy bit, especially with that black line)

good sense of lighting, the colour scheme suits the image well with the roses, the chinese dress and red hair. good sexy girl, especially the revealing dress length and pencil thin waist.

all in all successful but could be a little bit tighter

noteable ugly tangent collar-to-jawline, and again on that same colllar with the buckle, and again actually with the big buckle, and with the hair lol, still on that same collar, there's a bit of fuckiness with her right eye, just the wrong shape and such. lips look weird, the picture is a bit messy which could be fine but i think with the subject it'd be better served with crisper details, fair colour choices, the white outline looks okay, girl looks pretty, all in all fairly successful but could do with some work, and watch those tangents

I once again rejiggered my speech bubbles. Mix of shape tools and hand-done, with handwritten text. Going to take a little bit to figure out the size, but I think it looks better.

Also, my gunpowder fantasy is now live on even more sites. Do you look desperate if you are on too many, or do you have nothing to lose but the time it takes to update each platform?

"As an industrial and colonial revolution accelerates, the people of Alancria confront a fast changing world, where the haunting influence of the past is matched only by the grim omens of the future. Trying not to draw western is an interesting problem. As far as I can tell, the crux of the issue isn't in the relative size of the features, but in their placement. Anime characters tend to look like they got hit in the face with a shovel as a kid - large interpupillary distance and a shrunken maxilla seem to be the primary culprits here, which has the visual effect of making the eyes look huge when they're actually just given more focus. This may be why anime-style artists tend to struggle more with feature placement - there's just so much space on the face and so few hard landmarks to guide you.

Pic related is mine. It's pretty obvious that a white guy drew it, isn't it? And I think it's for the reasons I described. Am I on the right track here?

That was actually my first comment in this chain, I also find it pretty funny you ended up linking me to my own post from above.

I was making a passing comment on the obvious difference in quality between your redline and your sketch, but if you'd like feedback, sure, I'll do my best.

Anatomically, there's a few things that strike me as odd about >>3592424. The first is the position of the clavicles - you situated the clavicles with a very nice flow in your redline. You didn't match them exactly to the drawing, and though I'm not sure lowering them was necessary, there's definitely something that looks off about the shape of her deltoid, or placement of the acromion process. Although it might be more of a muscle issue, you sorted out that area nicely with the bones.

The clavicles of your sketch, comparatively, are very lackluster. They're two straight bars in perfect alignment, with no dynamism. The left shoulder is brought forward, and it would be a great opportunity for the clavicle to follow, but you didn't.

(cont.)

>> No.3592569

>>3592568
Some other faults I find with the sketch are:
-No real indication of tension or insertion points in the pecs. His left pec's insertion is covered by the deltoid and skin in that area bunching up, but it would have still been nice to indicate some of the flow
-Trapezius - deltoid flow is absent in the shoulders, I can't even tell where your acromion is because it's all one line of chickenscratch
-His left triceps is a big balloon
-Interlinking of his right biceps into the forearm muscles is poorly indicated
-The area of his face below the cranium is equal to more than half of the head, when it should be much smaller, especially considering top-down perspective
-The pit of the neck/gap between clavicles is absent when you nailed it so well in the redline
-Your separation of the adductors from the quads on his left leg feels very lazy, you just ran a single straight line through, the contour of the leg at the pelvis indicates no forms, there are no indication of the quads either, just a blobby mass.

And in general, your redline had lines that were tight af, both in terms of flow and line width, while your sketch has very inconsistent line width, lots of chicken scratching, and lines that feel like they're not heading where you'd like them to.

I asked you to name an artist whose linework you admired in the previous thread, you replied you weren't looking at any artist in particular.

Since lines are an artistic tool/form of stylization, the best way to improve them is to study how other artists use them. Your lines are fucked but there's such a wide variety of ways to fix them by veering towards different styles, that it will be hard to give you advice until you pick a style to copy.

I like the feedback, wasn't expecting it since the sketch was just there to indicate I was the anon who redlined RD. Drawing from memory isn't always going to yield a finished drawing so of course there's gonna be more creative liberties taken into the conceptual part of the drawing. Undefined lines and the laziness of the sketch was more so to get a generalized visual of the pose. The drawing starts from basic shapes and can always be taken another step forward but that was never my intention since again, its was a quick doodle. I'd imagine the quality would be different from the redline because I can draw the bones perceptually based on an already drawn image.

ps yeah that is funny how I linked your previous comment back to you. Ironic, practice what you preach next time.

I'm glad to hear those two are your picks, as they draw in a fairly realistic style (on the scale of full realism to full abstract), which means their linework rests on decisions pertaining to other aspects of fundamentals.

I would say that the main thing holding back your linework doesn't actually have to do with your lines, but with how poor the rest of your fundamentals are.

The artists you mentioned use concepts such as flow, hierarchy, perspective, form, rendering/shading, etc. to affect decisions pertaining to their lines.

You're able to make thick and thin lines. In a black and white style, that's about all you need to do pertaining to inking. The rest comes from mastery of other fundamentals, something you lack.

One example of this would be form hierarchy. All your strands of hair have the exact same size and follow each other like rank and file soldiers. When someone like Junji Ito draws hair, you can be sure his strands are broken into a hierarchy. There's a few major masses that represent all of the hair volumes, then smaller strands break off from these major masses.

Another example is shading/rendering and form. You've done some hatching to represent shadows. That hatching is fine. Its placement, however, is what's causing you issues. The shadows aren't consistent with anything, they just appear randomly: in a crevice, when a form turns, at the edge of every single strand of hair in one area... Studying rendering and form is the only way you'll be able to place that hatching accurately.

tl;dr: Your lines are fine, if you want to improve you'll have to focus on different aspects of fundamentals now.

The sticky is a pretty good start if you want an approximate roadmap of study material to follow. I wouldn't say it's perfect and would suggest you lurk a bit to figure out what books you could potentially substitute, like the much memed around here Loomis could be replaced by a few other authors that in my opinion make more sense.
But the FUNdies grinding aside I want to urge you not to forget to
>just draw
I would suggest you draw from life, you're gonna need to learn to draw in general even if all you want to draw is waifus. Copy other art you like, try to replicate it best you can and then analyze where you fucked up. You could also just try to draw from imagination right away, but I found it to be soul crushing when everything came out more autistic looking than usual at first (maybe it's just me though).
I don't know if you have a tablet to draw with, but I would recommend starting out on paper and then transitioning to digital (use cntrlpaint to have an easy transition). Anyway just buy some printer paper and draw what you like and have fun. A good balance between learning and actually drawing is the most important part. I think all of this is written in the sticky anyway so maybe this post is a waste of time now that I think about it.
Have fun drawing and ask in the beginner thread next time.

I think it makes no sense for your shoulders to be angled this far down. She's resting on her forearms, her shoulders and shoulder blades are gonna be raised unless she's tensing her back and neck into a ridiculous pose.

You didn't draw the back of her torso far back enough, she has an impossibly thin ribcage.

Foreshortening on her leg fails cause the butt reaches too far back, even when foreshortened you've got way more thigh than butt on that length.

And for god's sake, give her the outline of a collarbone, it feels weird to see a perfectly featureless upper chest like this.

You end your deltoids too short. It actually inserts midway on the humerus.

While on her right arm, the insertion point is directly facing the camera and not part of the outline, the outline still ends at 1/4th of the humerus, indicating an incredibly short deltoid. From that particular angle, it would be more natural for the outline to blend into the rest of the arm at something like 1/3rd distance. The other arm has the same issue.

Looks like you traced a 3d model, either from MMD or one of those hentai games that lets you make your own models. I mean, you've even got the rigid hair model, which is angled after her head, and seems to be clipping through her arm.

/ic/ is probably the hardest board to get replies on without b8 imo. It's different than the other boards because everyone is posting OC, that makes everything way more personal to a lot of people and it shows. Everyone on here has a toxic mentality and sees your art as competition instead of just another post so they'll most likely just ignore it and worry about themselves. Most people on here are just concerned with posting their own work without concern for any of the other stuff posted in the thread. Sometimes I've seen entire threads with just people posting their work and none of them were replying to each other or discussing it, just dumping stuff. I think /ic/ is the only board where stuff like this happens and it's probably one of the reasons why it's so slow.

Learn Greyscale values and understand lighting with reflection lights that bounce off certain areas. The best advice for improvement could be having darker browns for things without light and gently move to more saturated color brown with the light bouncing off it. You have the right idea with the lighting of the bugs and some of the branches. But you could try to use some blend modes on color brushes. Maybe make the mantis a bit darker except maybe for his head and face.
