Eye drew a feesh.

I like the fish better than the bug. I kind of just start with a line and see where it leads me. It's like daydreaming on paper and it's a fun way to draw but the disadvantage is that often the thing doesn't have a cohesive design.

Like the head and tail look like they belong to different animals

I think you already hit the nail on the head. He looks disjointed. I know how much fun it is to just let your mind vomit out neat little doodles, but make sure that you stop every now and then and filter your creature through reality. I don't think your lad would be able to swim, like his body would wiggle but his jaw would be too big and he would sink. Most fish with jaws like that have long, slender bodies for the reason of snapping up and pulling back prey

but from a draftsmanship point, he's looking alright. a little messy, but It looks like a solid form being represented, although I think you would benefit from looking at more reference of real fins. The ones you have drawn don't really exist in real life, they're more so a fantasy sort of fin.

also why did you take this picture on the floor between, like you're kitchen and living room? there's carpet and tile there lmao

>> No.3598380

>>3598349
With a lot of heavy weapons, the wielder tilts the heaviest part down and the rest goes upward. You reversing it here makes it look like he has a foam axe.

the perspective with his shoulders is off. his pauldrons should more or less be following the same line to the vp, but they aren't. you did this pose like you meant it to be 3/4ths but you sorta rendered it in 1 point perspective? Keep that in mind while you're making the next one, imagine the box showing 3/4th in 2 point perspective surrounding your character. do things line up? if not, alter it. this will fix the issues with the feet placement as well.

aside from that, I like your use of the hard round instead of going for an over the top texture brush. The issue is your rendering with it. especially around the neck. It reads really poorly and I can't quite understand what's going on there.

lastly, painting over a gradient always looks off. If you did it on a layer behind then just erase, or if you fucked the layers up too much and its too late, use the lasso tool to cut cleaner edges. this makes it look less messy

>> No.3598389

>>3597814
Reads better as a thumb than a full picture, meaning its under-rendered. the issue is when you see the full image you realize there are a ton of mistakes with a compressed perspective where you missed out on an opportunity to create some real depth, but you missed it. Everything considered this type of painting might be too elaborate to take on at your level. try doing a handful of studies with scenes similar to what you're trying to convey, and then return to it a few weeks later

>> No.3598391

>>3598380
thanks! how do I avoid having the lasso tool make the hard edge look too rough/jagged? that's the main reason I never use it. also need to stop doing everything in one layer, which is why I fucked up the gradient like that.

the reason that edges usually look too sharp is more of an issue with the value more than the edge itself. Forms wrap around things. So when you lasso, remember to slightly lighten around the edges to stimulate that the form is wrapping around.

Really appealing, but as I said before, her hip is off.. I know you have strong draughtsmanship when you're practicing it, but it really looks like you let it slip here. It's glaring. Maybe dial back the experimentation for a couple weeks while you hit up some life drawing sessions.

if there's one thing I learned from this one it's not to exaggerate the figure because if I paint it as realistically as I can, which doesn't take any more effort (if anything it takes less), it lets me be really expressive in the background.

Ingres would do that to stylize his figures, he'd idealize the faces and make the rest uber realistic so you'd get the impression the face was realistic too. I kind of want to do the opposite. Pure realism on the entire figure and then I can be as loose as I want in the background.

I did the hip stylized on purpose, that was a mistake in retrospect.

If you hate it give it a rest, work on something else and come back to it, it has potential. If the light were more assertive in the rest of the piece as it is in the upper viewer left quadrant of the figure, it could make for a dynamic composition. I like some of the differences in texture in the rendering, I think of that we’re explored a bit more and maybe if there were more metallic elements, it might pop more. I’d consider your placement of the neutral warms as well, make sure they make sense with the surrounding surfaces.

That still isn't what symbol drawing is. Symbol drawing is seeing a mouth and drawing what "mouth" means to your brain, in other words the symbol tied to the subject.

In the ref image she is wearing deep red lipstick and has a clear shadow between the two parts of her lip. The contrast of colors against the highlights above her lip and the shadow form contours visually even though they are not necessarily there physically.

Drawing those contours is not symbol drawing, it is actually the opposite of symbol drawing. Pic related is symbol drawing, because I am not drawing what I am seeing, I am drawing "two eyes", "lips", and "a nose", I put them where I think they should go, not where they actually are in the reference.
Contour line drawing, negative space drawing, and wandering line drawing are among the first things introduced to people learning how to draw in order to break symbol drawing habits.

I could be wrong but I feel like the body isn't what makes her appear young, it's the head. if you made the head smaller, she would look 21 and not 12. Kids have bigger heads, proportionally (or at least that's how it looks to me).

>> No.3604462

>>3604385
According to that blog post the difference between symbol drawing and non symbol drawing is defined as
>forcing the brain to move away from symbols for example, to look at a human nose and actually draw what it looks like instead of drawing the shape that the brain associates with a nose
Nowhere does it mention lines of uniform thickness denoting symbol drawing, but what it does say is
>the perception of edges using line or contour drawing
is one of the important skills that the artist being written about teaches his students.

So there is a huge difference between the two lips, as flat as they are, the contour of the edges was pretty accurate. Even if it wasn't accurate symbol drawing is entirely about the process and not the end result, there mere process of studying the actual subject and where the curves occur in relation to the other features sets it aside from the symbol drawing lips.

the hands and the feet just seem like you havent spent any time studying them before since they show no recognizable forms. its like when a beginner draws silhouettes instead of volume. the hands are better than the feet, but they look quite awkwardly flexed.
as for the lines, they just dont seem to serve any purpose other than to form an outline and create obvious edges between the limbs. they dont depict the form well except for the geometry near the bust once again, and the weight wavers a lot for no reason
>I actually spend very little time focusing on faces, compared to full body drawings. So thats... baffling
its probably just the fact that the bust is what is more finished. the proportion is okay and so is the pose for the most part, but it seems like the legs arent well connected to the torso and like youre hiding the far foot

i can't give you specifics because the gesture will come from what you're trying to say. it's ok for the torso to swallow the arm's silhouette as long as you know why. what's he doing with his hands? why are his feet pointed like a ballerina's? it might help to put into words what he is doing in the drawing.

Everything is looking too blurry, it seems you're trying to get the general proportions, but you're not willing to commit to any shape with hard lines.
To overcome this you can try and force yourself to only use a hard brush and 4 values for light, midtone, shadow and reflected light. At the very end you can soften up the areas needed.
If you're painting something that is very shiny, then you can add a 5th value for the highlight.
