In Loomis It felt like it taught how to draw figures, but without a lot of context to the process, like he introduces gesture through really detailed mannequins but hampton introduces super loose gesture and then builds up landmarks and detail later on. The process just feels more linear to me and I've gotten a lot of mileage out of replicating his example images and then trying them on photo references

It just seems like another, more complicated way of doing what has been taught in all the previous steps, and I also find it kinda confusing compared to the rest of the book wich is quite clear and simple for the most part.

Honest question, is this last part really necessary considering what's already taught in the rest of the book?

Man I really don't wanna go all hyperbolae here but you seem to put so much emphasis on having fun it's upsetting.
Art can be hard, it's part of the catharsis, to break your fucking back slouching down studying how to properly construct and render and then marvel at results a few years down the line.

Do you think ice skaters have fun puking all over the place while they learn how to properly focus their attention while they spin? Also your animu shit is gonna be useless when you draw realism if you start from there, as opposed to if you do it the other way around.

The three stages of the aspiring artist on /ic/

1. The hungry and enthusiastic phase. "Wow drawing is so much fun and I want to learn everything about it!" "Wow this art looks amazing! Maybe one day I can draw like this too..."

2. Bitter resentment. After spending a couple of months on /ic/ the once young and hopeful artist has turned into a spiteful shitposting crab. Drawing isn't fun anymore, so why should anyone else enjoy it? In a fit of rage he throws away his expensive import japanese art supplies because he STILL can't draw qt animu waifus with them. "looks like shit. fuck off to /beg/" "loomis is a meme kys"

3. Death. After a rare moment of self reflection the now fully transformed crab has realized he lacks the work ethic to make it and submits to living a normie wage cuck life. His metaphysical artist body now lays in a coffin on his way to the final rest. "kek nice perspective on the box retard" is the last thing he hears as he slips into the void...

>> No.3588232

>>3588196
i think that's not actually right, i think people start shit posting before they've even had a chance to be bitter. mainly they learn a little bit and it means they can understand pictures a little better so like a psych 101 student diagnosing everyone with mental illness they go around saying every picture by everybody is crap because now they can see errors they couldn't before.

then they join a clique like alt or dad or they leave, and/or they start giving a bit of useful crit and actively trolling

then they leave, or the become a crab

and i believe there's only a few real crabs here, like salty bros who've been down the bottom of the bucket for years. they're like the smug anime girl posters who literally only say bitter nasty things, and usually target beginners.

Kind of a Off-topic question here.
How would I go about downloading the gallery of work of fine art painters/ old painters?
I prefer having an archive of artists I like on an external HDD since I travel quite often but I have not for the life of me found a good way to go about it without spending at least an entire day autistically looking for most of the note worthy pieces of each of them.
Is my only option to be a good goy and go to museums each time I want to see/study a couple of paintings?

There is no such fucking book. Sorry if I sound so rude, but so many people on this board act like there is some secret 'method' to making 'good looking' anime art hidden in some book. There isn't. Ya know for how many plastered watermarked images I see here, its like nobody ever bothers ASKING the artists how they developed their style.

In reference to that specific picture, you can clearly see the artist has applied universal fundamentals to their artwork to make it look good. You know...the things that are referenced in the hundreds of artbooks that have been graciously linked on this board.

A lot of the basic anime/manga construction books are absolute shit and a waste of time. If you want to learn how to draw like the best artists in the industry, I suggest just studying the fundamentals much like everyone else, while developing your own anime aesthetic by studying your favorite artists. Get actual artbooks from animators, illustrators, concept artists, etc, and reference their work with what you learn about things like fold construction, lighting and structure. If you can, find videos of their workflows and you'll start picking up things and recognizing patterns. It's a process that takes years and a lot of experimenting.

Muroi sensei (a Japanese animator and art teacher) says it's 80% copying your favorite artist, 10% sketching photo or reality and 10% drawing your original illustration.
If you are a beginner, for a whole year you should focus on 3/4 view angle face and full body standing pose.
Forget studying anatomy and perspective systematically. Instead, just learn them as much as necessary. Never forget that you'll improve 90% by hands and only 10% by eyes and head.

Remember he talks about anime drawing and not about fine arts. Anatomy and perspective are of course necessary. Muroi sensei himself always emphasizes on the importance of foreshortening etc. But don't take it too seriously in anime drawing. For anatomy and perspective are "deep" and take your time studying, which doesn't necessarily make you improve fast. What he advocates is that copying is far more effective than anatomy etc.

Sorry for my rant earlier. I have recollected myself, let me elaborate:

In Japan, they have something called the 'young animators dormitory program.' The group of training animators have personal twitters. What they post and discuss is good insight into the anime industry as well as the learning philosophy.

You will see many traditional gesture and figure sketches, and some with a more distinct anime aesthetic to them. Making sure they have a good understanding of the anime style in all of its different forms..its of the utmost importance(as they have to copy the cd's designs). In order to learn these things, including proper layout design, they have to have an adept understanding of life drawing, perspective and drawing a full environment, so it's not uncommon for there to be an photography course as well for animators. The importance of referencing cannot be understated.

Creating anime 'fanart' and becoming an animator are different and similar in many aspects...although now-a-days, digital fanartists take a much more self-guided approach. This is why some are better at painting than actual drawing, and vise versa. It is sort of chaotic. In animation school, there is also the need for self guiding, so as Muroi suggests, there is a lot of copying from artbooks and the likes. Furthermore, if a famous animator with a distinct style is leading the workshop or course, their style and design philosophies will bleed onto the students(like Shinya Ohira's).

That is why I suggested a dual approach to learning how to draw/paint good anime fanart. You need both the universal drawing fundamentals and a good grasp of the anime style if you want to make good art. A lot of reference is involved, and its a lot of picking a bit from here and there. I already said it, but artbooks available here, like Nishigori's and Yoshinari's would probably be a good place to start. There is also a ton of good art on pixiv and twitter. It's not something locked away in some one crap book.

>> No.3591271

1)disclaimer: what i have described above is not at all definitive of how all animation is taught or learned in japan, and was just a sort of generalized insight.

some of it is what i learned some years ago so my knowledge may be a bit shaky, as I'm not japanese. That said, even for my post, for any beginner on /ic, you should take a bit and develop yourself. Never rely too much on one thing

nothing gives easy, easy gives nothing. even with 3d or 2d if you don't put in the effort you have only made something not worth anyone's time not even your own making it. e.g the reason kemono friends was popular was because one man put all his effort into it going above and beyond what he had to do, he could have gone the easy route and just produce a product made it mean he has to do less work but he didn't and people were able to see his effort through his work even if the animation wasn't always 100% the best you could still see the attempt to make it the best.

It is difficult. But do realize that good animation is often a collaborative effort. For anime, there is the storyboard that is revised and discussed, so that keyframe animator can have controlled but creative expression over the sequence; there is the layout that is approved and/or revised by the episode director. Sometimes, layouts drawn by someone not even in charge of the cut. And if you're a beginner animator, it is very common for your early work to be heavily revised on the first pass. You learn from these experiences. Unfortunately, as a westerner, you do not have the opportunity to experience such things, but have to find out on your own. That makes it a bit harder, but its not impossible. Most animators really start to shine with around 3-7 years of experience as a keyframe artist after their time under the 'tutalage' of other experienced animators and/or being an inbetweener.

Some things you should keep in mind is that animation is as much as a 'technical' art as it is an imaginative one. Keep in mind how things like timing charts work. They are very important passed as part of the workflow. An experienced animator can instinctively tell the timing and spacing required for certain cuts, which is how sb's can have the time required for each cut before the animation is even done. There are generalized timing sequences for things like walking, head turns and other subtle movements. Look at the animators survival kit for examples. You have to study life movement to properly grasp this. Start observing the rhythm in which people act and you can even do some rotoscope studies. Look at free stock footage and the likes(Toshiyuki inoue recently authored a book on this if I recall)

Dont get too prideful. Eat where you can. Even in Jp, most animators are freelancers and take any work they can. Dont make your goal just 'working for anime' or you will not go anywhere. Simply put. Masaaki Yuasa's studio SCIENCESAURU did the Adventure Time Opening. Dont shy from NA,EU or Sea animation oppurtunities because they will help you grow. This feeds into my second point. As a freelancer you are in a competitive industry, you have to have a wide set of skills. Learn how to draw animals, cars, buildings and post production techniques. Learn proper composition, so study some film.

Lastly, realize animation quality is subjective. Depending on the director, they may not be cut up for your shit. 'Correct way' changes. You are like a drone at the whims of your superiors as a labourer. This is why its important to be adaptive.

Ah well...this is the artbook thread so ill stop here.

thanks for the advice much appreciated. i still have no idea how timing charts fully work i have watched a few videos and even read the survival kits explanation of them but they still confuse me (from what i can tell they seam more like spacing charts as they don't really get how they help with timing).

how do rotoscope studies work? i have never done them so i don't know what to look out for to learn from without feeling like i'm just tracing mindlessly.

i don't mind doing western animation, i'm open to animating anything, though my preference is anime i won't let it stop me from other stuff.

i'll keep in mind all those things to learn!

it's subjective? i thought that if it flows well or gives a good sense of mimicking real life movement to a realistic degree it's good? but idk 100% what good animation should look like especially in my own work as i'm always feeling like it's not good, even if it was smooth i might feel like it's not really as smooth or as good as it could be.

i'll work towards being adaptive thank you!

>thanks for the advice much appreciated. i still have no idea how timing charts fully work from what i can tell they seam more like spacing charts

Well sort of. You can, practically, think of them as spacing charts if that's what helps you understand them. Timing and spacing are confusing because of how associative they are. But spacing is you could say the figurative "distance" inbetween the frames and timing is when they appear. Timing charts differ by location and animator. The most important thing isn't the philosophy behind timing vs spacing, as most explanations offer confusing definitions of them, but rather their utility. In studying more complex action and establishing rhythm, they're absolutely necessary. Here is living legend Toshiyuki Inoue's book on walking http://paworksshop.jp/shopdetail/000000000205/ . Some of it was posted on twitter for free on PA's English handle but you'd have to dig for the tweets.

>i don't mind doing western animation, i'm open to animating anything, though my preference is anime i won't let it stop me from other stuff.

That is fine. Just that sometimes opportunities can come from anywhere. Sometimes even 'anime' opportunities haha. One of my friends worked on Castlevania, where you can see those influences at the forefront even though it is a ""Western"" production. Also look into commercial work like Tatsurou Kawano or Shingo Yamashita(who had a panel at CRX recently!)

how do rotoscope studies work? i don't know what to look out for to learn from without feeling like i'm just tracing mindlessly.

Think of it like doing the same math problems with long, menial steps. It's about consciously and subconsciously familiarizing yourself with the movement. To make it less tiring, you can lower the fps to something like 8-13 so you can recognize the key breakdowns of movement which capture its flow.

great post anon, although i am not the person you're replying to.

I always saw it as just like italians discussing pasta. It's gotta have this, it's gotta have that. Has 'other thing'? Why don't you and your mother go to hell.

Anime isn't anime with a couple of crucial variations in execution. That is why people are divided in calling the Last Airbender an anime.

I guess this thread is about how to 'draw' anime. Yes loomis isn't a meme. just because the book has old style illustrations doesn't mean there's nothing to learn. All the fundamentals are the same. People just put different finishing touches to match the times.
