we are talking about painting as an art form, which of course is not bound by any medium or tool. One could argue that digital painting is perhaps the hardest way to mastering painting, as stated by multiple top tier artists who did both traditional and digital. This aptly shows how much of a hack RJ is.
Except for the mastorbatory detail, the painting looks oddly bent and flat, or bulging at the viewer in a strange way. It's because he has no sense for a general lighting situation. He just zooms in autistically to add as much ridiculous detail als possible.

Just look at the curly, underwater-ish, fatty hair on the creature. He has taken a horse body and copied a traditional chinese drawing design onto the head. The pink hair is his typical, in-your-face barbie effect that makes weeaboos go "wow!" at the first impression. There is no wind in the hair, it just grows out of the head in an unnatural manner.

The feet of the creature make no sense if you want to look at the path they are following down. Ultimately, the entire scene is a copy-paste result. The carriage is copied from an existing design, the horse as well, and we'll be talking about the pale bitch seperately in a bit. Now look at the ground. There is something very off, neither the wheels, nor the individual horse feet are on a consistent perspective level, they seem to somehow float somewhere in front or behind the ground. That's the typical, lazy flaw in a Ruan Jia piece. It's meant to impress, not to make sense. His paintings are like these shock bubble gums: They taste good in the first few seconds, but then you just want to spit it out.

The lewd, thin zombie bitch in this one is my favorite. She is lit up from below, as if she was sitting above a white ground and wall that reflects the sunlight indirectly. Except, she isn't. Not even the narrow, short step she is sitting on can justify this photo studio look. She is submerged in an unnatural glow. Now, nothing has to be "natural" in a fantasy scene, but this is just an ignorant mix of light situations - a mistake that any good artist would actively try to avoid. Not with posterboy Jia.

The horse is stepping back as if in fear of something, the head is smiling and stiff. This kind of mix of posture, head and body language is called "incongruent" - makes no sense as a whole. The lewd pale zombie bitch is holding a sword and the handle of the reins without any tension. All his bitches are always muted, sedated, motionless. It's a shit tier mannerism and the effect is just annoying as fuck.
There is no consistent motion in the picture, except for the laterns. Not gonna start talking about the mountains ...

he resorts to the tricks that everyone uses: copy the design of a carriage in your color scheme, loosely place it in a landscape, use the color picking tool and get the median value of rocks and grass from a given photo, copy a horse photo and put a copy of a dragon design in place of the head ... and so on.

none of this is suprising in the slightest, rather the opposite. his "stories" (as in individual pictures) are flat and vague. you can literally feel the collage-type approach of pasting designs - carriage, horse, girl, landscape photo - on top of each other. he doesn't succeed in blending them. all he does is sit for 50+ hours and zoom in with his one-trick-pony stylization schtick to add unnaturally bright colors on costumes and make the edges and planes flicker nervously.

tell me one thing that seperates him from the crowd. there are literally hundreds of such artists waiting in line to get game design jobs and are just as capable (incapable of originality, that is).

The creature isnt his idea, it's a chinese creature called a Qilin, a horse with a dragon head.
Also, you cannot blame the guy for what's in this painting, it started as a 1 hour workshop demo where the audience gets to shout out a few keywords that Jia then has to incorporate into a painting.
I'd imagine the words for this one was something along the lines of qilin, carriage, girl and maybe grass plains for the environment.
Here, have 5 words and get back to me with a better painting. Ash, Pelican, Berserker, snow and Tusks. Get back to me, see how well you do.
