IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Just remember: "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."

hello everyone! i've been drawing for a little over a year. i just thought i'd drop a quick post in here so someone else starting out gets a few things clarified and is able to save themselves a bit of time.

on studying:
-you should always be working on the fundamentals, and there's never an "ok i'm satisfied" level.
-try drawing something first without refs/studying, and then study a whole bunch of relevant refs, and then draw that thing again, do that a lot
-study and copy a lot of other artists. don't try to reinvent something just for the sake of it, if you see a neat shape that just works, start using that shape too.
-draw everyday, but also don't kill yourself with drawing. the point is to keep up a steady habit instead of drawing 20 hours a day for half the week and sleeping the other half.

on mentality:
-have a lot of fun, that's probably the most important thing
-design with purpose, i recently did some gun silhouettes and another artist asked me who was going to use those guns, what company manufactured them, what they were gonna shoot etc. you have to think about the intricate details to root your designs in reality
-try to figure out what kind of information is helpful to your art quickly, and ignore stuff that's not helpful. this is especially useful on /ic/
-if you feel burnt out, do other stuff for a while. go out to a park and pet a bunch of dogs or something.

on meeting other artists
-go attend irl art events that are related to the field you want to work in.
-art school is kinda a meme, it's far too expensive for what you get out of it but living in a hub where there's a lot of art jobs is definitely worth it.
-people in real life don't communicate the same way they do on an anonymous imageboard.
-post your art online and people will see it.

the best answer to this is that i found out there were "fundamentals" in drawing in july, that's when i first heard of the word 'gesture' in relation to drawing people. i mean i doodled when i was in like grade 2 or 3, but i feel like everyone's had some small amount of drawing experience before "taking it seriously"

Do you have to draw from your arm for small strokes, or can you do a combination of drawing from your arm/wrist/fingers?

>> No.3575496

So I feel like I had an epiphany today that might be completely wrong but it makes a lot of sense to me.

Even before I started drawing seriously, I understood the concept of breaking objects up into simple shapes to figure out their construction. Always done that. I also know that there is a general collection of shapes you should try to visualize objects as being made out of (cubes, cylinders, pyramids, etc.) What I never thought about was using this way of thinking in regard to perspective.

The way I see it, if I learn to draw all these shapes in different kinds of perspectives, then it should get way easier to get perspective correct. Cause then when I break up my figures into simple shapes I can also mentally pose them using my knowledge of the shape's perspective.

The main problem with this that I can see is that I, uh, dunno how to learn how to draw these shapes from all sorts of perspectives. I can guess, but if it doesn't look right I won't know how to fix it. Unless just trying to draw these shapes over and over will somehow teach me their perspectives.

So this is my first attempt at watercolor since like kindergarten. Obviously it's pretty bad but the only part I'm really disgusted by is that brown smear on the left that I did literally as I was finishing up.

Are you supposed to mix watercolors before adding water to the paste? How would I go about painting the soil in the pot without ruining each individual lithops? Does the white actually do anything besides affect the hue of other unused paint? I couldn't seem to get it to show at all when I added it. Are pans of watercolors as awful and unpigmented as they appear to be?

I'm basically trying to teach myself drawing and painting by drawing up my idea with graphite and colored pencils and then translating it to paint. It's working decently so far.

I'm working with Walmart watercolors and brushes atm and I was wondering if any of you guys might be able to recommend the best place/brands of low cost but not atrocious quality paints. In addition to this, I'm interested in learning how to paint with either oils or acrylics and was wondering which was the best for beginners. From what I can tell, I'm best off with acrylics for the moment because it seems that all I really need for them is the paint itself, and maybe a coat of varnish on top. What brands of paints and brushes are good for whichever you recommend? I'd like to stock up them in addition to more watercolors and brushes. I know that brushes are somewhat versatile with the exception of most watercolor brushed being too soft for acrylics and oil paints having the potential to damage brushes of a certain material.

How do you guys store your paints? And I doing myself a disservice by painting on two dollar canvas boards and watercolor pads on a flat surface? It just feels more natural to me than an easel. How far do .74 ounce tubes of paint really get you?

I think your figure lacks a lot of depth. Overall it's a fair study sketch, bit too much chickenscratching.
Try to draw the form and not just the outline of what you're seeing. Try to reconstruct a ref instead of just copying it mindlessly, or you'll not really learn much from it.
There, you got your comment.

>How tf is this beg tier
-Hands are horrible
-lower point of the waist is too low
-bellybutton is too low
-tits rest too high on the ribcage
-her right shoulder is smaller than her left
-her left elbow is fucked
-eyes are absolutely generic and a clear example of symbol drawing.
-purposely cut out of the feet because I couldn't handle them cause I'm bad
-Very safe pose lacking any foreshortening or an interesting perspective (and that didn't stop me from fucking things up)
-as I originally said, shading is shit
-Took me tens of hours when that level of quality can be surpassed in less than one by anyone who knows what the fuck he's doing.
And I'm probably missing other things that better artists would have noticed.

Not necessarily, it's just my personal workflow that is incredibly inefficient. Watch someone draw a piece live on Picarto and you'll see that anyone can draw something way less crappy in a fraction of the time. I'm just very bad.

the bottom and top lines of the box will converge at the vanishing point.
so if youre working on a big enough paper you should be able to just get your ruler draw those lines, then take a line back to the front dot, and where that intersects the back line place the dot.

Character design of a weird demon. Tried to make it strange and bizarre but I have little confidence in my skills so it probably just sucks.

you're on the right path, try to keep in mind proportions, it helps to also draw the neck and shoulder to keep them in check. keep in mind the nose and lips have form to them, hold them accountable to how you have the sphere set up. i like how you attempted the eye sockets

try to pick better references where the light doesn't look like it's coming from a camera, the one on the right looks good though. when putting on values try to keep it consistent. the planes on the face where the light is directly hitting should be brightest while planes which are turning from the light should be a mid tone and cast shadows/lips/inside the nose/where skin folds should be darkest. it sounds basic but all of the portraits that looks nice had extra care on their values. as far as proportions go the face on the right doesn't look balanced, just remember heads tilt in some photos and you have to account for that

Idk if this counts but when I was younger I sort of wanted to draw comics to make my friends and I laugh and one idea I had was about a group of explorers trying to civilize a cave dweller which would backfire when he goes unga bunga and breaks stuff.
Pic related was a sketch I drew of said character some time ago.

I eventually got into anime and vidya and abandoned that dream because I was into Naruto and playing Pokemon.

That depends on what you want to draw. Studying light is a good way to start. In that case, you'd want to learn about value. Value is just light and dark and it's important for making things look 3D. A good way to learn how value works is by doing still life drawings. Study the forms of primitive objects; sphere, cube, cylinder, cone. Try to capture the subtle shifts in value.

shouldn't need to measure with a ruler, draw a sphere, put a horizontal and vertical axis, add a side plane if the head is at 3/4 angle and start from there. just know that the size of each facial feature is relative to the other facial features, you should aim to strike a balance. this rule changes somewhat if you're no longer drawing typical portraits and using dynamic angles instead but really it depends on your goal. if you want "xerox" levels of accuracy be meticulous with your measuring. if you want to be able to recreate faces or heads without reference it would be good to start building your construction skills now. ultimately you want to be able to pull from both your observation and construction skills at the same time.

Your values when rendering are all over the place. If I squint, I can't tell what's light and what's shadow, cause there's too many arbitrary value variations.

Find your light side and shadow side. This works best if your pictures have strong directional lighting, pictures with flat lighting are incredibly hard to render and a waste of your time as a beginner. One you identify your light and shadow sides, pick a general value for each. Do not cross the threshold between these values - anything that's in your shadows will always be darker than anything in your lights. Remember this rule: your lightest dark should always be darker than your darkest light. This will simplify your values a lot, help you focus on shading the forms, and will tremendously clarify your read.

Since it doesn't matter if you render like Ruan Jia or whoever, if your drawing skill sucks. You can learn drawing and painting at the same time but it's not as efficient. If your drawings look great without color, you can hardly fail, cause it will look dope even if you do the most basic coloring. Also you'll soon enough realize that painting, picking colors and figuring out how light hits objects and interacts with materials is a really small part of it all. If you can draw, you'll easily pick up the painting stuff, if you can't draw everything will look like shit, no matter how you render it.
