Well, this drawing got extremely little attention relative to the amount of time I put into it. I can totally understand why though since its not very good. Even though lineless art takes way more time it usually looks really bad when I do it because I suck.

The watercolour pictures I do as quickdraws get more attention than these oil pics that I spend hours on.

That's just how it is, bro. Pareto distribution. Either you resign to the fact that what appeals to any set of people that happen to be exposed to your work is fickle and unpredictable. Or you try to analyse what the appealing aspects of your more successful work are and incorporate that into the pieces you spend more time on. The latter path is a dangerous one though and it can both drive you mad and kill off your passion.

I've been working professionally as an artist and illustrator for 10+ years and I've yet to figure out why some things take off and others don't.

Digital done with oil based brushes I mean. Has a significantly different look than pictures I do with watercolour ones exclusively. Obviously not done by hand though.

No one liked or commented on it cuz it looks fucking beg. Maybe go look at an artist like Simon Stalenhag or even just Faraz Shanyar and imitate a square inch of their work.
Also if it's taking a year to make a piece, that's not indicative of a good piece, just bad and unpracticed workflow.

Also people did like it, just not as much as other painting I've done with significantly less time and effort. That was kind of the entire point of my post.

of course people like the stuff you did with less time and effort lmao, Jin Kim could hammer out sketches of Hiro Hamada in his fucking sleep and people loved those sketches because Kim was in his goddamn element when he drew them, not agonizing over every line. The effortless stuff is always gonna be more unappealing than the agonized forays.

I find that intermediate artists get ignored the moat often. People here don’t really hold back if you’re an absolute /beg/ and will happily tell you to quit but if you’re intermediate then there isn’t much to say. The work doesn’t stand out and it isn’t shit so it just end up getting ignored.
