I no longer know what to think about a painting when I don't know if it was done with photo ref or not.

photo ref is like cheating and I have zero interest in paintings that were made that way. And that is my opinion, so don't argue it.

schmid shouldn't be your favorite artist. there's literally thousands of artists with better or equal technical ability who are also artistically much more interesting.

i know he says he's the greatest in that book he wrote about how great he is but he ain't that great.

>Dürer lightly sketched the image and underpainted it with some washes of brown watercolour. Then he patiently built up the texture of the fur with a variety of dark and light brushstrokes in both watercolour and bodycolour. Gradually, the painting was brought to completion with the addition of a few refined details such as the whiskers and the meticulous reflection of a window in the creature's eye.

>There is some debate over how Dürer accurately captured the image of the hare: he may have sketched a hare in the wild and filled in the individual details from a dead animal, or captured one and held it alive in his studio while he worked on the painting. A reflection of the window frame in the hare's eye is often cited as evidence for the theory that Dürer copied the hare from life in his workshop, but this cross-barred reflection is a technique that Dürer frequently used to add vitality to the eyes of his subjects.

I wish I knew how this guy achieved the crazy level of detail in his skies/streets. apparently he cranked out lots and lots of paintings because he didn't spend lots of time on them, which seems counter-intuitive when looking at the painting.

Forgot the name, but it'll come to me.

But it makes you feel something right? That's talent. It's not easy to invoke disgust through simple brush strokes. There's a fine line between cartoony portraits and realistic feces, this man walks that line with grace.

Is he doing that 'style' on purpose? I don't understand why he messes up the edges and values on the face so badly. He'd actually improve a lot since he paints a lot, if he actually cared to pay attention to just edges and values. Also focus on quality rather than quantity and spend more time on these and 'fix' them.

anybody else gets just really frustrated mixing colors?
I normally work digitally and I'm used to jumping all around the painting to work on different angles, but in acrylics it will all turn to mud on the palette cause I keep seeing cool color combos I want to try
