IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

I think you need to take it a few notches back, or approach dynamic figure drawing (assuming you are from the filename) differently.
Pay attention to how in the book body/parts are constructed in volumes, cubes, cylinders, etc.
You might be better served by starting a simpler book, keys to drawing or one of the simpler Loomis books.

I am using dynamic figure drawing, yeah. I've been through keys to drawing already and wasn't really sure which book to continue onto next. As out of date as it seems maybe ill try fun with a pencil instead.

I'd focus less on the fur and more on the shape and how shadows fall right now, anon. You can add fur detail back in once you have the basics of the anatomy of the animal you're trying to draw back in.

Confirm to me, will honing my "3D mannequins" technique (that is, doing this same model on every pose) good enough to become an outstanding artist??

>> No.3547598

>>3547595
Eh, I think it's just mileage. The 3D mannequins will only help you with construction, and construction is one of the critical components of drawing but there are others.

Anatomy
Shading
Texture

come to mind and you need to be good in all of them to be an outstanding artist.

Since you shouldn't get stuck drawing yourself from the front, I'm angling two mirrors to view myself from the side, but I run into logistic issues like the floor length mirror not being tall enough to view the top of my head at a flat angle.
Which means drawing from a below angle or stuffing a bunch of shoeboxes with filler, raising it up, and hoping nothing falls.
Plus my head's way smaller with the cheap makeup mirror being 2.5 feet from it, so there's a loss of detail.

Does anyone know any guides out there to make working with mirrors less Rube Goldberg-y?

I'm a pretty new artist. I also started off by drawing mannequins instead of drawing pretty much anything else. I could never get a straight answer out of /ic/ on how exactly I should practice drawing them. Even artbooks that walk you through the construction process oftentimes have conflicting or mismatching mannequins.

At least the ones I looked at. What I've been able to glean is that experienced artists don't generally create detailed mannequins like what you've drawn. You only see that in 'redlining', when anatomy is being checked. Experienced artists draw very "fast and loose" mannequins because, as far as I can tell, they just know what they're doing.

So I don't think drawing detailed mannequins is necessary as a beginner. It's only something that comes in handy later. Right now it is very important to learn correct anatomical proportions. You want to sketch figures that have correct arm length, torso size, head size, hand/feet size, etc.

In my uneducated and very beginner opinion, that is mission priority #1.

If you can't seem to draw a straight line, have the machine do it for you. That's what it's for. You've got a line tool now, as well as a move tool, selections and layers.
You'll be able to do everything freehand eventually, if you just practice, but if you can find a way to reliably cheat, then it's not really a priority to learn that.

I have seen many artist doing light hatching with very pointy tip of the charcoal pencil rather than scrubbing pigment down and blending it. For me I can't keep a sharp tip for very long.. On one hand it has to consist of simple enough shapes like boxes or cylinders to easily control its perspective, foreshortening and proportions to make it reproducible. Experienced artists can start with more complex shapes right away. On the other hand you must be able to map anatomical landmarks correctly to points that can be reproducibly found on or deduced from the mannequin.
Grinding mannequins will only help you if your mannequin allows you to do these two things:
1. draw a reproducibly consistent shape-scaffold in perspective
2. deduce anatomy from the scaffold

When looking at >>3547595 it doesn't seem like you have control over the consistency of the shapes of the mannequin yet. Instead of using bulbous cylinders of ambiguous shape you should use boxes. It's easier to control their size and perspective more unambiguously at your skill level. But you should build a proportionally correct mannequin first.

This is the first thing since I started that I felt I could maybe get critique on to figure out what I need to do to get out of beginner stages

Is this the beginner's burden? Showed this to my friends and they really praised me, but I don't think I can claim this as my art just yet; as my real skill.
I know I simply looked at nude models on my pc for 4-5 hours autistically lookingup and down and drawing in hopes of learning something about the Human body to one day being able to draw them from memory with at least 60% this much detail. Zoom the fuck out and lay down the foundation/rough shapes before you start zooming in and doing details.
As for layering, it depends on your workflow but I just do my grayscale value painting on a single layer, only start using multiple layers when I apply color. You could layer by object so you can slide shit around easily, but honestly just thumbnail sketch your composition before you start.
As for what you got down so far, there's not much functionality to have any of that on seperate layers.

Doing a sketch isn't required but if it helps you, sure. It just seems you were working from small to big, which will result in some deformed monster (notice her mouth is sliding away to the left because you have no gameplan here).
Ideally you work from big to small, even if you're just blotting in shapes first with a relatively large round brush (and for learning purposes preferably without opacity or soft edges) and go from the big shapes down to the smaller shapes.
Tangently related, try to draw what you see. Just compare the shape of the nostrils in the reference to yours, you see they're not the same right? Or that the philtrum is nothing but a value change, and not hard lines?
That the right side (from our view) of her mouth extends beyond the wing of the nose in the ref, and in your painting almost lines up with it?

It teaches you a bag of tricks to help you draw, that's why it's called "keys". You won't remember a lot of it without actually drawing and you can figure out a lot of it by just drawing. So I recommend reading a lot to familiarize yourself with what it generally talks about and how the information in the book is ordered for easy reference. You should also read Fun with a Pencil and Figure Drawing for All It's Worth before Heads and Hands, and I believe the hands section is easier than the heads section.

I'd say reduce the thickness of the neck and make it longer (women tend to have longer and thinner necks).

Smaller nose, and eyes more to the center (or maybe smaller). I'd recommend you look at the shape of the face and then see if the discance of the elements (eyes, nose, mouth) in relation to the border (the shape of the face) are the same in both. If not, try to correct them (unless you are going for a certain style).

Aside of that, maybe be careful with the clothes, maybe a darker grey in the background so the lights have more contrast but that's up to you.

I could be wrong it some points tho. But overall I think you are in a good route. Just soften some stuff and see how it goes.

The underlying gesture is pretty static, I haven't studied how to draw clothes and I know how to draw exactly one type of face. The main reason I am pleased with this drawing is it came out looking proportional and neat compared to my previous drawings. I think I rushed to finish it after doing the head and bow around her neck and it shows.

So, I started learning some time ago with the two webpages listed on the first post (drawabox and ctrlpaint, mostly because I just don't have time to read art bibles) and have been drawing boring shit like geometrical figures, arrows, lines, circles and all of that.

I'm in that annoying phase where I REALLY want to draw what I'd love to draw (vidya stuff) but I just don't know how to start or where. I feel like this box drawing and shit isn't taking me anywhere near my goal, so it's super frustrating.

When do I know I can finally start doing what I started drawing for? aka when can I start having fun? Or how do I even start?

Any advice is welcome. I feel extremely overwhelmed.

You're not done with Draw-A-Box yet lad. Do all lessons 1-7, then move on to Hampton's Book to learn proportions of head and body and key placements of things. Fill in several journals doing all of this. The suffering won't end though, you can try drawing the things you want and cry in pain every time because it will always look like shit even as you did all of the above. Why? Because you won't get good enough to even impress your grandma until you're in your double digits of filled sketch books.

Not going to touch the "style" (there's a lot i would fix, facial feature wise, and other elements to combat flatness), but hope this'll help you a bit.
Lineweight needs work but there's some more glaring issues in my opinion, like the formless blob you use for her hair. Just look at your ref and try to pick up the shapes/ribbons that drop from her skull. Also don't do shading like it's a drop shadow, again just observe the forms.
You tapered her neck to her chin, which looks just awkward, try to understand that the neck is a cylinder supporting the skull.
Halfassed redline attached, I don't have my wacom here.

I hope doing gesture shit is not worthless and i will learn something from it.
despite Tremor.
Would it be too dumb to use my wrist for drawing proportional studies (on paper just like my gesture drawings, they are nondigital as well, but drawn with my arm, not wrist)?
I have to learn proportions, drawing with my arm is hard if i want to get proportions right
because of Tremor/ shaky hand

You can do this with your brain's OS by learning perspective's effect on lighting. Then you can just change the a light's position in your imagination and sorta rough out the shades and tones.

It needs less work, actually. Anime is flat. Do not render your anime.

This goes for all noobs, I repeat:

DO NOT RENDER YOUR ANIME!

Top to bottom critique:

Hair looks tall and voluminous, very good. Hair clumps aren't sharp enough, focus on making them look pointy. The bangs look good, save for that side burn thing. I can't tell if it's part of the bangs or a sideburn because of the way it's not really wrapping around any plane.

The far ear is in poor perspective and should be barely visible at that angle as the front plane of the face would obscure it and the puffy hair would cover part of it. Over rendered, too.

Weeb Eyebrows don't have shading or outer contours, they're just black strokes with thickness that increases as it approaches the glabella. Practice making z shapes that adhere to the contour of the forehead and obey the stylization principles mentioned above.

Eye shape is good and surprisingly symmetrical. Though the the lashes on the closer eye are shit because the thickest lashes exist on the opposite side of the tear duct.

Nose is over rendered, anime noses are nothing more than triangular dots. No philtrum is needed, either.

Mouth is over rendered. Just put a rounded W shape to represent the parting of the lips. Take perspective in consideration for overlapping at that angle. Keep the little arc under the lips which represents where the chin sits between those two thick lip muscles.

Chin is shaped well and neck is good if you ignore the over rendering.

Flowers will never have 11 petals. They only exist in multiples of 2, 3, and 5.

Don't put signatures on your work until you can sell them and this shit wouldn't cost a dime.

Oh yeah, hair is overrendered.

According to Prokopenko, the bean should not be used for any actual gesture work, it's more for figuring out creases when the torso bends. Ultimately, you should be figuring out how to put a cranium over a gesture sketch.

Go see Proko's proportion lesson and you'll learn how to use divisions of the body to figure out the general size of body parts.

If this is your first writing as well it's best to get it out of the way as the chances of your first story being the quality you think is low. Of course if you want to do gag a day strips that's one thing, but don't be afraid of doing a story with a narrative as at worst you'll learn how to better execute one down the line. But you do have the right idea, having a project to put your grinding into practice is a good idea.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't make any sense. You can't claim to render lit objects with the same accuracy of a computer program. Light is strange. How are you sure that your core shadows are the right size, or your cast shadows are the right length? And that's only when one simple shape is involved. There's no way that when two or more are involved, you'll be completely accurate. How can you account for bounce light, subsurface scattering, ambient occlusion, different materials, especially without using resources?

We can strive to be generally correct, and with simpler things, we are. But I sincerely doubt your claim that your mind is as good as an object renderer.

>>3550046
Anon good on you for learning your fundies. Using references will get you way farther than claiming your mind is "an OS". I agree with the other posters who say to use Blender, as it's a great resource. Best wishes.

wrong.

Light is very predictable and as long as you know what you're doing, you can use that knowledge to make a rendering as accurate or stylized as you want. you said so yourself that lighing is weird. so there is a degree of error in 3d programs just based off of that assertion. come back when you learned the components of light and shadow, kid.

Getting the gesture alone was hell, but getting the exaggeration along with mixing in P&S is just as bad. I wanted her to lean in forward, her pelvis elevated behind the torso with her legs apart. However I rely on robo beaning after drawing the head to get poses down more so actual gesture drawing (not sure which is more beneficial to actual drawings) and with what >>3550796 said aligning the body with how I drew the head is another hard part. The twist is just kind of how I eyeballed it because >>3550803 her torso does face somewhat adjacent from her head and her pelvis is a 1/4 turned from her head. Anyone got any tips on foreshortening

I 'cheat" and just use the coil technique, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJWLaDSNBAI . Scara is gay but this is an okay way to eye ball figures.

>> No.3553104

is this coming along okay? im worried about anatomy (im aware that long forearm is long) not sure about everything else. and the foreshortening. she's supposed to be leaning forward while the rear leg is extended back behind her.

Are you using references? Because yes, mainly the forshortening is wrong but analyzing photographs or models could help you. The coloring isn't that bad though. Maybe just sketch to train figure drawing and if you want to practice painting, choose simpler objects like still life?

its kind of a hard/specific pose to find. so theres nothing that really matches it. but i searched "woman crawling forward" and some of them are decently similar. just noticed that the lower leg that goes across the front is too long too but that can be fixed easy. is the foreshortening terrible or just kinda off?

If I'm drawing the contour of an object, should I preferably try to do the whole thing as a single line?
I'm trying to draw my lines as long as possible as to avoid chicken scratch, but I'm not sure if this will be doable for very long stretches because it's harder to be as accurate.

critique on this? Just like the other times I posted on /beg/, I haven't used any reference for this

There's nothing that matches it because it would be a gruesome picture of a woman with no bones in her legs. Have you tried sitting like her? It requires something of a split, with the front leg rotated, to the point that it's coming out of the stomach instead of from under the hips.
Not exluding that the angle on your back leg is problematic too, as I can't imagine we'd be able to the the top of the thigh, basically the front plane of the thigh, while if I think the front leg away she should be laying on her legs, and considering the torso in somewhat of a position like doing pushups.
Legs come from under the hips. The refs you're looking for is a combination of push ups, yoga poses and maybe some ballet like splits... And keep in mind that your combination of torso and legs are impossible in a number of ways.

Ah yes, sycras coil technique, been a while since I watched any of his videos and completely forgot about that.
Gonna try it out and see if it helps, thanks my dude.

I tried to position myself like that and I just couldn't do it, maybe I'm not flexible enough, this is a trace of the best I could do legwise.
Why did you choose a pose like this, was there a specific reason? Next time base your pose on an existing reference, get someone to pose for you or try using software like DesignDoll perhaps.
I don't think it's all that bad altogether, just keep on practicing.
