IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

So how are you actually suppoded to "read" an art book? Like, say Loomis. Are you supposed to just draw every page. Skim over the images until you find something interesting? Read every parapgraph of drivel until it makes sense? Ignore it?

Try to study real people, of course, but I think it may be more useful for you to focus on individual body parts rather than the entire body, all at once.
Maybe do legs right now. You can either go on /s/ and draw the girls there, or look up "fashion runway" on Google and draw the model's legs. Focus on the volumes (3D shapes) instead of the outer contours of them.

>Does it mean if one leg is blocking the other draw whatever is hiding?
That, or being aware of the hidden side of the form and add some contour lines so you know where it is. People fuck up necks and noses or the arm on the far side of the figure because they aren't thinking about what the hidden side of a form is doing or how and where they connect as a 3D form. The number one cause of fuck ups is not making sure simple shapes connect where they should.

The thing with perspective is that it's tedious to set up, but makes it easy to build upon what you already have. It seems to me like you've drawn a one-point perspective grid and set up some big, basic forms on it, but you're not trying to break up these forms or add onto them. Everything is painted flat onto your boxes. The doorway at the right has no thickness - why not give it a front plane (camera front), like the larger houses you've built? Why are all your houses perfect boxes, with no variations for trims, features such as doors and windows, roof heights, room extensions, street clutter, even small details such as some stones jutting out.

Don't rush. You've got a lot of fine detail such as your stone textures in the facades and street, then it looks like you got fed up and finished parts of the drawing in a couple minutes (like the back of the street or these hanging flags). I can clearly see potential in what you're drawing here, don't waste it. I'd say you're approaching micro detail too soon and should carefully plan out more form changes (following your perspective grid) before you jump into texturing.

(Also, what's with the cast shadows from the buildings being significantly darker than their form shadows? We can clearly see the road and buildings are the same value when lit, so their shadows should be the same as well).

About the door closest to the camera. I did try to give it some thickness but I think it may have gotten lost in the shadow. You’re right about the houses being perfect cubes, I should’ve tried to vary them some more. I didn’t use any reference either and I think it shows since everything looks very simple. You’re also right about me getting lazy, I had planned to add some more windows and doors to the street in shadow but just kinda got tired and gave up. Also about the shadows, I assumed that cast shadows were darker than form shadows since they receive no light at all and that’s why I made them a lot darker but I guess I got that wrong.

Anyways, thanks for taking the time to give me some feedback. I’ll be sure to keep it in mind for next time.

yes would be turd polishing only because you seem to be struggling with not seeing what you draw as forms with shadows and instead as symbols of what you think they look like. you draw these outlines where its actually a shadow. look at your drawing side by side the real thing and look at what your lines actually represent. Like the Sticky says, try doing a photo study with an upsidown reference, only turning it right side up when youre finished.
Also i acknowledge that outlines are used for cartoon art, but the idea is that the form can be represented without shadow, which you need to study anatomy and realism before you can do. keep practicing tho, your lines look a little raggedy and something like that can only be fixed with practise.

That piece as a whole is ok, just the shadows are just straight black with no values to lighter shades. Focus on the light and dark tones and your midtones

Also, to use charcoal, you need to smudge it while drawing, which involves rags, your fingers and using the eraser as a drawing tool instead of getting rid of mistakes.

short answer: yes
long answer: read it, copy the drawings, but most importantly take the principles you learned reading and drawing and apply them in practice. One small exercise I suggest is finding a photo you like of a head and face, and try to recreate it accurately from the different perspectives and angles you learned in drawing the head and hands.

>what are some good pens for smoother lines
The most important thing is to git gud. Your lines are messy squiggles because that's the way you draw them.
There are different pens, though. I found this review of brush pens for calligraphers. https://www.jetpens.com/blog/the-best-brush-pens-for-lettering-and-calligraphy/pt/621
Just, you know, don't blame the tools if you still can't draw.

I don't really know about acrylic, but I expect it's possible. You just need something that won't dissolve or rub off the paint.

I'd go a lot lighter and closer to yellow, like a raw sienna or stucco pink that the edge near the gate implies, and imply heavier shadows with the magenta range it's sitting in right now.

This is what it reads as when pushed slightly, it's a very dark maroon right now.

that edge showing by the gate is super misleading so disregard it. i think the side in the light would be burnt sienna. and yellow is sorta gross. i intended for the red to be on the darker side regardless of lighting. i sort of wanted a contrast between the lighter tiles (even when shaded) and the darker wall. but that maroon is equally as bad as what i htink youre implying.

so here's what ive done since.
>followed other anons advice, destaturated a bit
>darkened the near portion and slightly lightened the further
>darkened the shadow on the tiles
>added general (to be further refined later) pattern to some of the header stones
>darkened the stone arches to match wall values
>darkened the deeper areas of trees

i think the color/values are starting to settle in better

You need to understand the surfaces we see are composed of two components. A diffuse component (direct lights and shadows), and a specular component (reflections). On most surfaces, the diffuse component is much more visible, and specular reflections will only be seen in certain conditions (at glancing angles and around light sources, such as the reflection of a bright bulb, a window, or in the case of your ninja ladybug, the sky. This effect becomes more visible on smooth, polished surfaces (such as varnished wood or glossy plastic), and can be almost impossible to see on rough surfaces (have you ever seen a bright highlight on a brick?) The actual science of it is that the highlight doesn't disappear, it gets wider and fainter the rougher the surface, which makes it *seem* like it's not there on rough surfaces because you're seeing the same amount of reflected light over a much bigger area. But let's not get into the details of that.

For shading, I think it's easier to treat the highlights on most materials as additive to the lighting of your base surfaces. Start by doing the diffuse component of your surface, with your center light, half-tone, and shadow. Once that's all good, you can add the highlight as extra light that is added to your already lit surface.

There are two things you must remember:

1. Highlights are reflections of your environment. You can clearly see the sky at the top of your ladybug. The part where the highlight seems to "end", is actually the reflection of the treeline, which is much darker, and thus has a significantly lower specular contribution (essentially nil). Because specular light doesn't have a start and end point like diffuse light, it's a reflection of your *whole* environment. But only the brightest parts will be visible.

2. You can look at chrome/metallic surfaces to see what a pure specular reflection would look like. It might give you a good indication of how different forms will reflect different environments.

i will take a look at this book. i know i should develop a solid foundation but it's hard to motivate myself to complete conventional exercises with plants or buildings, when i only want to draw one particular thing.

I mean, everything. Depends what you want to draw. But if I had to pick, I'd say draw bigger, and get into the habit of planning your lines carefully so you can get rid of chicken scratching. After that, you probably want to work on a mix of anatomy and construction/perspective together, so you can add complexity to your characters (which you will actually have the room for since your surface will be bigger, and your lines cleaner and more economical).

I'm the person who posted just above you, so I'm not advanced or anything but here's my two cents.

>Can you draw traditionally?
If not you might want to learn how because it's more intuitive.

>Are you using the proper art program?
That looks like MS Paint, and if it isn't you aren't utilizing the program properly. Most important ones in Photoshop from what I gather is brush, mixer brush, eye drop, layers and brush sets.

>Are you using a mouse?
Then this is a limitation that you may have to deal with until you can afford a tablet or somehow learn to draw with a mouse efficiently.

>What shading/rendering style are you going for?
Post an example, do you want strong edges and cell shading like DBZ, or do you want something very soft and realistic like sakimichan. Right now it looks like you want to pursue a cell shading style.

>To draw anime/manga waifus nearly all artists study real life/observational.
To bend the rules you need to know them well.

I mean there's many things you can improve on seeing that picture alone but these are the main questions I'm posing to you because they're the most important.

>pic related is the style I want to learn to paint in so I look at it while I paint my first digital piece and constantly refer back to it.

Touhou autist, here. Am I getting better? I can't draw clothing or hair for shit and I'm just kind of using my imagination for the anatomy.

Sometimes you don't need it because the pose isn't very dynamic, sometimes you do.
Also check body construction in general, those wrists are fucked. Watch sycra or proko videos, or whatever you like
That should keep you busy for the next year(s)

That was totally a different person asking those questions about gesture, but I'm glad they asked. I've done gesture drawing before, but I get bored and impatient easily and just want to draw 2hus. I don't know anatomy, either. Maybe I can change that. Past experience says I'll give up in a few days and not try again for months, though.

I haven't drawn in fucking months, and after this month I don't plan on drawing in a while most likely again. I am shit, and I've only gotten worse with lack of practice. Despite my failures, I can't help but be utterly ecstatic. 1 month. To improve. I think I might be slightly nuts. I've always been over-analytical and autistic. I've done large amounts of research into Visual Working Memory, and drawing acquisition. Honestly, the theory of art has always interested me than application, and I've been always unable to defend thus. 1 month. At last one update pick a day.

I will intermittently stream and probably post that I am: https://picarto.tv/XUFNZLYBZ

I can't record my motions on the paper, but I'd do screen annotations of my process. My exercises range from by-the-book to seemingly unnecessary to utterly insane. I'm not expecting anyone to be that interested, but having a group of people that can call me out on my BS would always be nice. Hey, if I actually achieve anything fruitful, I might explain my line of logic. It is rather time-cube-y. I am not normal

Pic related, just shat this out - really shit. Just as a reference starting point. I will make my update-drawings more focused in the future.
