photo study helps the artist practice lighting and colouring. Is great for the ol' portfolio as well, but i agree that variety is needed, you cant study your whole life and not make original work, which im sure they dont, and im sure this improves their other works.

No one does a study like this let alone paints like this from imagination. Rendering something on a blank white canvas with no color and values blocked in underneath assures that you will learn nothing from it and also means the guy is color picking because you can't accurately pick colors by eye when they are surrounded by white. Colors and values always need a relation.

i think im being too safe. every one of my pieces is a portrait with a cyberpunk tint. i want to do environments but the always turn into porraits with a background instead of a landscape

face is crooked, eyes have no depth, shoulder is attached to his ear that for some reason you cant see. also next time dont outline the lips so heavily (or at all), if you need definition you have the watercolor for that.
just go ahead and color it. If you worry too much about the undersketch you'll never have time to improve your watercoloring. Its a bad thing if you feel like you'll lose a lot if the coloring goes wrong

when a person frowns you dont see their upper eyelids, atleast from that angle, so it just looks like the eyes are naturally placed too close to the eyebrows (if thats how you want it to be, it looks awful).
theres also the shading but that you'll fix with the watercolor

its one of those where the paint is taking too long to dry so by the time it does I wont feel like fixing it anymore.

I do on the parts I can't seem to get the color right on. So yes occasionally I do. But the colors were based off of a sketch i made while looking at the reference off screen. I've always had trouble with olive/tanner types of skin when it comes to color. This study is helping me with colors and certain contours on the face shape.

only works for copying photos. you're better off using the block in method and try to guess the color by seeing instead of color picking.

the whole point is to be able to paint from imagination. color picking from the get go is just slowing down your progress. it's like trying to freehand a straight line but you practice with a ruler.
