Just do it. Initially it's a bit sketchy (no pun intended) just going in without guidelines, but it's not that difficult. I find that to me it doesn't make any difference. If I can't draw something just going in raw, I can't draw it uses guidelines either -the problem is usually observational. If you can draw something using guidelines, you can almost certainly draw it without them as well, you've just meme'd yourself into believing you can't.
>>3520309
>he's still visualizing forms mentally
I really don't, I just put lines down on paper and that's about it. Especially when drawing from memory, my mental process is almost entirely unconcerned with the act of drawing. It's kind of like when you type, you don't actively recall what buttons on the keyboard to press, it just comes out. Same thing with drawing.

That said, I'm really quite a terrible artist in the grand scheme of things, so you shouldn't take advice from me.

Dude, I understand what you mean, I do it the same way. Because it's the primary way i've practiced, the academic "gestural" drawing is h.even harder than just putting lines on paper. It's more like... Muscle memory + drawing boxes and keeping the vanishing point in mind.
Sometimes I honestly think that academic drawing (vilppu. proko etc.) is aged, because the old masters wanted to build a system when in reality, in order to draw straight to canvas (Kim Jung Gi, Katsuya Terada etc.) you just... have to practice drawing straight to canvas. Academic excercises like gesture drawing and construction are very helpful in understanding things, but I feel like artists often do things because they are stuck in a process and they are taught to do these things. It's like playing classical piano vs jazz piano: one method relies so much on sheet music while the other just "feels" music and fills the gaps with theory. The straight to canvas drawing method is like a somewhat revolutionary thinking in terms of drawing (people are just beginning to learn it like Moderndayjames, Mathias Zamecki, Tom Fox etc.).

> revolutionary

There's nothing revolutionary about it. Many old masters do it. Keys to Drawing and Drawing on the Right Side of The Brain tell you exactly that.

Proko and Vilppu arent a replcament for that and vice versa. Being an artist is 15% theory, 70% observation, and 15% actual drawing. If you cant observe, you cant draw. Simple as that. Its not a new method, its literally how its done, Proko and Vilppu both recommend life drawings.

Thoery is there to help you understand what it IS you are drawing and how to manipulate it. It is part of the curriculum that helps creative drawing A.K.A drawing from imagination. Techniques and such. You dont HAVE to use those though, because observation will teach you much of this already. These lessons they teach are a result of observation.

For example, they OBSERVED how when a person turns his torso, his entire upper body moves in sync and back muscles stretch, and the pelvus gains an angle. They then simplify it down to shapes to better illustrate this point.

This is something learned in OBSERVATION. Theory is the result of lessons learned from Observation.

Kim Jung Gi also teaches Thoery by Observation. Look up his classes. You know what he draws to students? Boxes. Because he uses simple shapes to get across a point he learned from Observing.

Theory is literally someone else's "Aha, so that's how it works!" He learned by observing.

I don't usually draw from my imagination so this was a lot of fun. I didn't know what I was going to draw when I started so there are a few things I'd have done differently but w/e, it was fun to doodle

These are older and a lot more scruffy. I've found direct drawing has helped me improve drawing from imagination, much more than gesture, photo studies, strict construction ever have.

I never construct anything because i dont want to throw away my sketch for a lineart thats just gonna be a soulless imitation, and i will never grow anyway
