IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

How do you tell where your cursor is when using a Wacom tablet?

Im going to give you an honest critique because I actually see potential in your art.
Your rendering skills are really nice they can be improved but its definitely bordering high quality. I can tell your anatomy is a bit wonky. You should study the muscles and bones of the face more.
Once you achieve that level of realism in the face you could easily be the next big thing.

It's not really a test, it's an exercise, it's supposed to make you improve at actually seeing things vs symbol drawing.
But if you wanna do something in a similar vein but more fun, take any sort of picture you like and put it upside down. I believe quickposes has an option for that, even. Do those instead, see how accurate they come out (though I don't recommend doing timed ones, you need to see the real pictures at the end of the exercise). If they don't come out that good just keep practicing.

>> No.3514412

No the idea is that ANYONE can copy something when they don't try to draw what they think is there and instead just copy it.

>> No.3514418

>>3514408
As I said, the exercise is meant to increment accuracy when you copy things, which is good if you wanna do the whole realism thing but also really good when you're studying literally anything, because copying something in an accurate way will make you learn it for what it is. It's a really good thing for beginners to improve on, it basically speeds up their learning process since they can study better.
I also recommend the lessons ctrlpaint has on these subjects like measuring, negative space, blocking in, contour and all that stuff that basically serves the same purpose.
Go check that out.

draw more and try out some hatching. it doesn't look that bad by itself but some parts are far from what the reference is. the skinfolds over the eyes and the eyebrow placement, the chin/jaw, the shading on the masseter. don't scribble as much. i think you could be more efficient if you used lines that wrapped along multiple faces so that it would give more of an illusion of 3d than needing multiple lines to define planes. think of it as a line that is a contour of the form but also serving an illustrative purpose (like an s-curve that wraps along a cardboard tube used to hold paper). the other recommendation is studying portraits much more, whether that be the abstractions from reilly or loomis or scott eaton's portrait course. knowing the fat deposits and muscles on the face goes a long way.

Watch this lecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T7cDY7YDsg (How to draw head by Steve Huston, and painter who has teached at Disney and Blizzard's studios). The lecture part is 1 hour and there are 2 hours extra stuff like looking for examples etc. etc.

Welp, took an art lesson today. It was a drop in style class with 4 other students. We were all new so she didn't have much one on one time with me. She showed me a diagram of facial proportions and told me to try setting down the middle lines for the face first. I tried that and feel really bad about the result. I'll go to another class but it's really stressful to do this poorly. Disappointing so far.

if you play a song badly it only lasts for as long as the song lasts.
now imagine every time you tried to play a new song you stopped the instant it wasn't played perfectly. you'd never learn a thing.

hey there op here. i haven't -seriously- posted in a long time and i dont post on /ic/ anymore because over the past couple months i now know what people are talking about when they say it's not a good environment for artists. i used to defend it by saying that repurcussionless critique with no sugarcoating was the best way to move forward but there's no more of that. it's just literal crabs (whether they realize it or not) and generally low-skilled people; as i've improved over the past two years you notice that the board's average skill level stays the same.

this is evident when you see that outside of the generals, the work that's being posted is 90% of the time beg-tier. you start to connect the dots and realize that very few people actually know what they're talking about (not factoring all the objectively useless critique like "x looks off"/"learn anatomy"/"learn shading"). those who can draw well are too busy drawing and not posting in threads. it dawned on me why people like vetyr/kyle/barcode/bbc/michaelmacrae left

i only come to make this thread when the last one reaches bump limit. hopefully some beginner who hangs around here as their first stomping grounds grows to be the next craig mullins or some shit. very unlikely but a nice fantasy. i hear tales of old /ic/ and i get sad at not being present when this place was what it was. surround yourself with great artists (not just good) and you'll reach new plateaus.

end unwarranted thoughtspew.

Get a huion display tablet. They are extremely affordable and almost identical to Wacoms save for two things. The pen needs to be charged and doesn't have an eraser tablet. Other than that, I'm giving my ol' wacom to my niece and not looking back.

The non-display tablets can sense the pen before it touches the canvas, so watch the screen and you'll have a very good idea where the pen is before your stroke lands. It'll become second nature, but I really say go for the display, bruda.

It's really about the mileage. Do plenty of quick life studies blocking in the shapes and sizes of objects. Do rocks and trees and block in their shadow masses. Be quick and squint a lot to lose the detail. Stop every other 30secs to eyeball the proportions and distances and compare your drawing with the subject. Doodling, copying, using a ruler/measuring devices and doing 20 hour finished renders will not help you with this. Eventually you'll start getting feel to it.

Question is always "how often" or "how long it will take". That depends on you - if you do 30-45mins of these warm up life studies of fruits and trees and rocks from different angles before starting an 1-2h session of doing croquis figure drawings every day, you'll see great improvements of your perception withing few months. If you do this kind of studies only 30mins a day it may take long time. If you do this once or twice a week you may not see much improvement.

What are you trying to accomplish - if you want to do comic books or anime style faces you should still learn about proportions of the face. Go study figure drawings and see some anime head guides. Your off to a good start. I like the line variety in the hair. When beginning don't try to do finished drawings of many hours, but study things in life to get a grasp of proportions.

Yeah, but don't underestimate the importance of life drawings. Go draw some quick 5-10minute fruits and rocks and trees every day. They'll help you in every field you want. Keep them loose and relaxed but quick. Don't try to capture any detail but just shapes sizes and masses.

The semi realistic comic book face is probably quite deep subject and I'm not that familiar into comics so maybe some other anon can help with that. But if you want to become good at comic book drawing, you need to study everything.

Drawing and art in general is often studying little bit everything. A good artist knows a little bit about cars, castles, rocks, trees, grass, human anatomy, animals, cloud formations, how water diffuses light etc. It's quite a field.

Alright so I've given up on this photo study but I thought I'd just drop it in here as is for some critique. The purpose of it was teaching myself how to render skin that looks appealing, and by personal taste I think what I've ended up with looks too oily. I was more so aiming for a "powdery" matte texture but I think part of it was a result of the brush I used. As for the colors, I was told that I should incorporate a variety of different tones so I kind of tried to but I didn't know whether to take it farther or dial it down, so I settled where I thought okay without bastardizing the photo. Thanks for your input in advance guys

that says nothing, do you draw every day? are you doing figure studies from reference? Are you attempting to construct using forms? are you actually thinking, or just mindlessly copying? if you are just doing pic related, you will probably not go very far no matter how long you keep at it. I don't know if you used construction for the head shape, if you did, then good job, it looks like a head and has some form; the face features are awfully symbolized and I can tell you did not try to properly place them, for they are in a different angle to the head.

You need to do more drawings from reference, from real life too, focus on drawing what you see and not taking shortcuts and symbol draw it. It may be a good idea to use traditional pencil and paper for your studies, I think it is a better medium when starting out. Also try to read and practice on the basics of construction, that is very fundamental knowledge that you should have. It doesn't have to be complicated, just learn to do the the ragdoll figure and practice it in different poses, try to see a reference and draw the ragdoll in the same pose. Those are the kinds of excercises I did when starting, but most important I think is doing studies from reference a lot.

Sorry for long post and sorry if It seemed rude, just trying to help you out. Fundies come first, then anime

I use csp, using the dense watercolor only gave me hard edges and with P&A I was struggling to get them, that's why I asked for brushes, but if it's not that important I'll just keep practicing and see how it goes. Thanks anyway, I appreciate the critique a lot.

You should never draw the contents of a structure before the surrounding structure. Define the position and relative sizes of the major segments of your picture before you start with any detailing. So, first put in a box for the head that sets the height/width (even the depth and angle) for the head, then put in boxes/cylinders for the torso and arms. Or start with guidelines that help to frame the boxes.

i'd have to agree

for shading try using a single colour (like a type of blue red ect) in a multiply layer or careully picking out the colours for each area

(the way i do is once i select the colour i move it slightly towards a colder hue, then bump up the saturation (i do the oposite or highlights)

oh and for white, use a slightly blue tinted shadow

Is "problem solving" a skill you need to improve on when drawing? Sometimes instead of doing normal studies, when I doodle I just like to tackle why something looks the way it does, how to improve on it and such, the best or different ways to draw the same thing etc, and I like to do it in a trial and error way, with the aid of reference occasionally.
Is getting better at coming up with solutions when exploring these "problems" a skill I'm improving on that can help me or am I wasting time with this? I've heard it mentioned in the past, I watch a ton of drawing videos but sometimes they're bs so I might be off.

What I'm doing isn't "get gud quick", but it's something that I feel is a path to being perhaps mediocre. At the very least, it's something I find entertaining enough that grinding isn't that boring.

I skipped most fundamentals. But I practiced drawing 3d shapes while I got the hang of my tablet.

Then I look for art I like, and I import the images into photostop, lower the opacity, then I draw a new image on top that is a crude sketch (a weird looking mannequin) of what the original image is. Then I delete the layer with the original image, put a new layer on top of the crude sketch, and I move the original image to my 2nd monitor. Then I attempt to recreate the original image using my crude sketch as an overlay, and frequently looking at the original image.

This is only "quick" because I'm stripping away all fundamentals I feel like aren't relevant because all I want to do is draw cute anime girls and I don't care about drawing furniture or plants or landscape and at this point I don't even care about shading or lighting. It's just about getting anatony and facial features down.

Decent job for a beginner but get some Loomis for that face.

Looks computer generated, but yes looks good in my opinion and it's way more interesting than some static frontal head shot. Maybe the low eye level will throw some people off.

I actually disagree with the other anon, the shorter gestures are the key to understanding what gesture is all about.
What the really short gestures are supposed to force you to do is focus on what is important, as opposed to scribbling down as much as possible as fast as you can.
Speed is only the byproduct of confidence about what is important.
You shouldn't do short gestures exclusively though, 30sec to 5 min is a good range, as to not get lost in detail.
CroquisCafe on youtube is a good resource you should check it out.

If I just did fundamentals exercises, I would lose morale and become disinterested in improving. But if I try to cheat my way into being a mediocre artist who can only draw anime, then I will give myself a means to perpetually stay motivated.

And let's not even pretend like half of /ic/ didn't have their humble beginnings as some teenage weeb who copied anime religiously before they actually practiced fundamentals.

to add; i think i place too many handicaps on myself.
>no guidelines
>dont draw geometric shapes in place of body parts
>only draw the most difficult angles
>always draw in perspective
>only the most difficult drawing tutorials
>attempt to achieve the most possible understanding of biomechanics and anatomy

No. Look at a tiger skeleton and figure out where the joints are.
And you need to include a simple shape for the muzzle - a ball isn't good enough.

If you wanted to build muscle, would you malnourish yourself, fracture your arms, pull your ligaments, and then go straight to lifting 200kg?

Doing the hardest stuff is not always the best way to progress.

And the things you may view as cheats are really just methods.

You sound like someone who refuses to learn anything in science class unless he can come up with it it through his own experiments.

Or someone who will only learn to play an instrument by playing it a lot and refusing the learn scales, techniques, theory knowledge etc.

Over centuries humanity has condensed lifetimes of work and research from many different people into easy to digest lessons. Take them, don't try to reinvent the wheel.
