never did loomis but also don't "just draw." i prefer my own version of construction and tend to advocate for all artists to find their own way and not stringently stick to loomis. i still do have a lot to learn and apply n im grinding studies every day to fill in my visual library. ive been covering a lot of female anatomy the past 1-2 weeks so not a lot of variety here atm!

I stopped coming to /ic/ for a bit because about 50% of the posts were his and /ic/ doesn't have mods. Which was actually a good thing I stopped coming but its still shitty for the board in general.

when learning how to render unfamiliar materials go back to basic shapes and use a reference, then move up to complex shapes. if you have trouble learning using pure value, funny enough, try rendering in color
just looking at what you posted here though, i think you might have tried too hard and forgotten some real basic, fundamental rules. use a reference. it's not really worth giving a specific ciritique here, you wouldnt be able to correct pen and marker anyway but like with all materials, look especially at how highlights interact with values next to it.

In my opinion, everyone adapts the process of construction to fit their needs, and there are sometimes when you can infer line placement without the need of construction and make things work. But i also think that to be able to correctly infer the lines one MUST have the background knowledge and some degree of understanding of the concepts of construction which Loomis and other books talk about. I would say the rest comes with Practice™

Pic related is how my process when drawing from imagination works, I will begin with some basic action and then build upon it and refine it as I go.

I've had a couple of friends and a few artists I look up to had an accident with their right hand at one point in their lives, forcing them to use the left hand. They found their grasp of fundies significantly improved when they start getting used to drawing/writing on their left hand. I forgot the article but it has something to do with developing both your left/right brain that made these people improve 2x than before. All I'm saying is there is still hope if you can no longer use your right hand for drawing

Maybe if you're an illustrator, but as a designer/concept artist you have to be able to translate your designs into 3d objects and draw them from multiple angles so that people can make the 3d models in the first place. Good designers have internalized perspective so they can iterate and sketch much faster than anyone can stitch together boxes in 3d

>> No.3516252

well this applies much less to figure drawings
constructing everything is completely autistic

there's a set of normal perspectives you should internalize, you can do the complicated wonky shit in 3d instead of memeing yourself

There's indeed a divide and one group are indeed the hardcore animu artists who draw nothing else. But the other group believes they can git gud but they only draw boxes and meme about loomis.

There is no right or wrong, you will have to find your own path if you truly want to git gud but you'll have to do something that you haven't done before.

What I'm doing right now. Haven't drawn in a while and I'm getting back into it by drawing something I drew years ago.
Right now I'm "just drawing" but I'd love to know what to draw to improve. For reference I want to get into animation so if there's anything I need to do specifically I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction.
