It really isn't, there was a lot of good parts that i wish they'd kept in the modern style, but its still too rough and a bit too exaggerated and silly in parts to be better.

its exaggerated in a bad way. Like the whole anime hair was just dumb, it didn't look good, it didn't look realistic, and usually it wasn't consistent and was just made to identify characters. Bringing in that back down to more realistic levels really does look a lot nicer.

On the flipside, the chins being closer to reality hurts it because it does take some of the appeal away when you combine it with the simplistic nature of the drawings. The sharp and concave nature of their jaws looks more deformed than human-like. Simplifying it into a more rounded shape makes their faces look more human even if it is less realistic.

You're still attempting to portray a real thing in a stylistic fashion.
You can't draw humans with no joints and say its style so its okay now. Humans have joints and its the reason movement works the way it does. Hair comes out of your head in a certain way, being stylized doesn't change that. You can have some fun with it, but the classic anime hair did not really go in any categories.
It was too exaggerated to be stylized realism, and it was too normal to be complete fantasy stylistic bullshit.

Hair should look like hair, and when you have bangs that come out 3 head lengths away from your forehead, there's a problem.
The silly hair was never a good stylistic choice anon. Modern anime has much more appealing hair styles.

Because there are so many ways to draw "modern" style whatever the fuck that is, there are just so many different styles and each artist puts their own unique twist on it. We are unironically in an art bubble right now, the market is over saturated with insanely good artists who have nothing to do with their time but draw, sure there are bad ones but you can find good ones EASILY. Colors and shit are just so appealing, you can do a lot with digital art software that only gets better every day, from adding interesting and complex backgrounds to putting tiny complex stars and sparkles in pupils

I'll just direct you to a few. Go look at Diebuster, not Gunbuster, but Diebuster's colour palette. If you go look at LOTGH they have a more traditional style palette without looking washed out. The 2010 anime film Colourful, don't watch it it's only kind of okay, uses muted tones to enhance the story telling. Jinrui wa suitai shimasita has some amazing colour work done in it and I would highly recommend it. Nagi no Asukara has very pretty blues that I reference occasionally.

I enjoy plenty of modern anime, there are some really good ones in terms of narrative, animation and especially design and style.. but these are just a handful and can't be compared to the golden age of anime 95-2005.
