IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

my advice: don't get caught up on exercises you barely understand the meaning for

the exercises are there to give you an idea of what should be, but the processing your brain has to go through to understand why "should be" actually is, is often completely lost

you can see where processing information goes wrong all the time here on /beg/, i don't need to point it out. the only thing you need to do is keep drawing until your brain learns how to process information just for drawing. lots of book writers try to make this act of processing sound like some kind of arcane function your right-side brain does, so we'll just go with that

Focus on the weight distribution. for standing poses think about the leg that is bearing the weight. If you're character looks like it's floating away you're doing something wrong. Pose needs to be stable and action pose needs to have a direction from and to.

I highly suggest using the mannequin to emulate poses from ref. Do like 20 per day as warm up or go more if you have time and can stay focus.

>>3504301

The whole point of the mannequin is to help with designing poses. And drawing from imagination is pulling from an existing knowledge. All that anon have to do is do a lot of gesture or use the mannequin to study poses. The more he do the more he learn and the more he can pull from when he draws from imagination.

He's not copying loomis drawings but he's tried to draw from imagination. The only problem is his database of knowledge regarding poses is lacking.

Taking cirno's perfect drawing class here.

Which books are best for learning the prerequisit sections like shadows/volume and perception?

I've read over a lot of Dodson's how to draw so I think I have the first section on lines and techniques covered, but I can't find any one good resources for properly shading and adding volume to shapes.

For perspective I'm goin to study perspective made easy, but for perception I don't know what book is best for that.

Have you actually drawn the things he tells you in that book? Chapters 4 and 5 are just as important as the ones before it. After that it trails off but 1-5 are necessary. The first 3-4 chapters of Scott Robertson How to Render if you want to go in-depth. But really, observe and study still-life setups around you then recreate them.

>but for perception I don't know what book is best for that.
Another reason these vague infographic guides are bullshit made for easy likes and (you)s. You can't be spoonfed all these, you have to actually do some research on your own for what you want. Other people can't tell you if you haven't tried yourself. You don't even know perspective, don't get ahead of yourself.

For a long time I've just been flipping through random drawing books doing excercises without learning much. The cirno tutorial seemed nice enough in explaining that you need to start from the bottom and stick to developing all the basics first.

Which is why I'm just trying to learn about shading/volume/whatever. I want to get down something that basic before I move onto perspective.

read the following but don't do the exercises:
perspective made easy
perspective for comic book artists (search around the /beg/ sticky for a certain mediafire)
how to draw by scott robertson

then do the first two lessons of drawabox, don't get hung up on them, stick to peter han's dynamic bible if you want to keep going

I like that infographic even if the details are wrong. Main things to take from it is how he makes crappy drawings appealing and not to spend weeks tracing and grinding boxes and cylinders like a fucking badger

>The cirno tutorial seemed nice enough in explaining that you need to start from the bottom and stick to developing all the basics first.
I'm glad you got that from it. A lot of those skills are acquired at the same time. Shading can wait, it's not as important as drawing. You can look up videos on youtube to really understand it. If you're using a pencil you build up tone by lightly going over the paper, lifting your pencil, and repeating. If you want darker tones you layer more tone instead of pressing harder.

I recommend a similar path as the other anon. The drawabox lessons can be good mileage for familiarizing yourself with your tools and improving dexterity but remember they're warmups. Do those first two lessons if you think they're working for you (it's actually a copy of Peter Han/Dynamic Bible https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk course) but practice is nothing without application. You won't realize the importance of being able to draw these boxes at any angle until much later and by then you'll want to grind more so don't get too hooked on it now. Ellipses are important, straight lines are important, connecting two points with a confident line is important.

For books, Scott Robertson How to Draw or read Perspective Made Easy. You don't need to do every exercise in HTD but understand them. Some of them are great skills to have or refer back to if you need it in the future. Vilppu Drawing Manual Chapters 1-6 are good for continuing on primitives and intro to gesture, after that Steve Huston Making Every Mark Count and Hampton Figure Drawing I recommend for figures. You will have a better idea of what you want to study after that as well as your weaknesses.

>no one does this
I know. It's fine to look ahead at the material for an idea. Every beginner wants to learn to shade but they're usually limited by a combination of their knowledge and what they're using (a #2 pencil but they never said what).

An easy place to start would be the eyes imo the left eye looks very much like symbol try to look at angles that create that eye shape, and you'll get a more realistic eye.

To be quite honest, you're using a shitty reference to practice on, because of two things in the photo.

One is that one girl's face is obstructing so much of the other girls face, and the former has her face pointed away from the camera, so her features are obstructed as well. The hair itself is not helping.

Another thing is the lighting in the photo is god awful for sketching. As a practice for studying tone, highlight, reflections and shading this is good, but for form and shape the light just makes it hard. The reason it makes it hard is that the highlights on the girl's face is the same colour as the highlights on the background sand, making it hard to get the form down. I can see from the sketch that you had to erase and redraw the lines around that area, compared with the rest of the image which, while it has chicken scratch lines, it looks much neater.

Try going for photo references with good lighting and does not have glare, otherwise you did a good job with what you were working with.

Lines that are carefully measured in the first place don't need to be erased. Just getting the initial rectangular frame and envelope right will noticeably improve your work. Use a ruler to measure all your lines carefully and approximate every curve with straight lines. It also helps not to jump into portraits, try copying something with clearly defined lines like pic related.

Hey there. I'm so much of a beginner I don't even call myself one, I have never actually practiced with a method or regularly, I just sometimes like to sit and sketch some (most often crappy) doodles, I usually try to copy the facial features of friends I find good-looking. Other times I practice symbols and other stuff, trying to get proportions right.

Now, I did this thing right here, without using references and picturing how it would look in my head. It's at the early stages, just the structure and a few details on the face, don't even mind the left hand and the feet because I know I got them abso-fucking-lutely wrong. It's just this naked guy sitting on something (stairs, maybe) holding a cigarette, I just look at it and feel there's something quite off, and it's quite flat too.

no shit, when you're bad at something it won't be as fun. as you improve with realism and copying you'll enjoy it more and then will have a better foundation to build style from. it's plainly obvious when someone draws stylized and has no grasp of fundamentals or realism. it results in bad work unless you've been honing your style for a decade

Practice. I can construct a realistic human from memory because I've practiced enough. It's possible but if you need something specific it's a waste of time. I've made and bought sample packs for specific purposes of making music. I'm not going to reinvent all of those sounds for artistic integrity. The goal is to create what I want to create with the least resistance possible.

But I think your biggest problem is feeling like you have to be held to some high standard. As soon as you break from the arbitrary limits you've set yourself you will be free. Hold yourself to whatever standards you have, but be reasonable and create.

>> No.3507894

Because drawing from imagination is still drawing from memory. Everything you draw is from memory, even when you look at a model you have to look away and draw it from your head. Drawing a realistic monster is the result of studying people, animals, and material. There will be characters of the monster that you can compare to things which exist. As limiting as it sounds at first, nothing you draw will be wholly original. However your combination of things you know will allow you to synthesize wild imaginary, realistic monsters. Draw a lot, study, expand your visual library, and create.
