IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

im a complete beginner considering getting an entry level tablet like a wacom intuos. i have minimal experience drawing, but am interested in digital drawing as it lacks some of the more frustrating parts of paper (imperfect erasing of mistakes, cost of supplies, etc).

is it worth getting a tablet for US$80-100 if im not that good at drawing already? i feel like it'd really help me get into it more, but i could just be a retard and suck even worse at using a tablet. are the entry level tablets like the intuos accurate/easy enough to use?

also, what the fuck is with nibs? i cant figure out if you can use the same one for years and not notice or if theyre like mechanical pencil refills; there's not many forum posts about them i can find and it seems pretty split between people not even noticing/caring about the nibs wearing down, or being pissed they have to keep buying replacements. if nibs are a major issue ill probably pass since i dont want to bother constantly ordering shit for drawing, thats one of the reasons i want a tablet in the first place lmao

I have a small intuos, and hadn't drawn for years when I bought mine. There was a bit of a learning curve but I felt like it wasn't too bad (I use corel painter). As far as nibs go it took me about 6 months or so before mine was worn down, but I think I press too hard. All in all they're pretty easy and hassle free, but I've since gone back to traditional. For me, I feel like digital was allowing me to create higher quality works without improving my drawing, but that's really just a matter of your process. I don't think you'd regret buying one.

Next time you produce something of this level you should put it in the draw thread, the only real big thing is that you need a lot more time spent rendering areas of the skin for example on the hands to make it smoother and on the other eye and parts of the forehead. You're well on your way and you're describing the gesture well for the most part.
However you seem to be reverting to contour when you can't adequately describe the gesture, torso of the bottom right for example.
You also have the habit of stopping your line when you reach the end of a specific bodypart, when one long unbroken line would be better suited.
For example the outstretched leg, stopping at the knee when one long fluid "S" curve that describes the entire leg would be better suited.

Good for /beg/ but:
I can see what looks like a photo you pasted in in the background, paint over that a lot more and there is a lot of weakness in the mask. You need to study rendering -- material studies on plastic and cloth and get a better reference, the lighting from behind should be way more intense.

contour is the outline, what we recognize as visible lines, edges of forms and shapes.
Since the visible line lends itself to most tools at hand, like a point to point drawing game, most beginners fall into the trap of focusing on contour at the exclusion of everything else.
It's fine to draw contours as long as that is not all that you're doing.
Theres more things to consider, the form, shape, gesture.
Proko has a part in one of his Q&A's about this but specificly about gesture, the same principle still holds though.

Not rotating is fine, some artists use it for efficiency. I think the 1px is ok if you're into that extra thin -type lineart that you will probably shade and/or color later to give it form. Otherwise I would recommend using many different sizes.

If you want a tablet you should get one but it's a lot of learning involved with pressure and software. You shouldn't need to replace nibs often because you can adjust pressure curves. There's a lot more to learn and explore with digital but it's not going to improve your drawing skills. You need to practice both digital and traditional a lot, get miles everywhere you can and you'll notice improves in traditional reflecting back in digital and vice versa.

Adding in detail is when it gets to be too much for me because by that time, when I have done all of the constructing and stuff necessary for big pieces, the drawing is too messy.

It's like anything else though, just practice, make small improvements, you'll get used to it and have more free brain space for adding in your own flare and inspirations.

I'm just breaking through that barrier at the moment, it's more important to appreciate what you can draw than to worry about what you can't. Try to find something fun to draw that isn't human or really symmetrical, something that you've never drawn before and just think about how you've managed to draw something new and that it's another thing in the growing list of things you can.

Try looking at it in a meditative sort of way, play some music, sit outside, anything that calms you down. Then finish with drawing what you want, knowing that it's just practice and will not be top quality right now. You can always improve it next week when you learn something new.

Pretty much. The whole idea is to capture the gesture with "S" "C" and "I" (straight) lines and to exaggerate it.
Also don't use 3D rendered models for this.
Go to:
And draw many of these. Remember not to rely on contour. The gesture should be capable of conveying the basic emotion/story of the pose.

It's not too bad. When you do a portrait (or anything) try to feel the forms behind the face-- your shading should lend some three dimensionality to the head. For instance, we see that you made the effort to add form in a few places, but it wasn't super effective.

Something that I find really helpful when trying to feel the form of a portrait study is to use something that has a strong source of light from one (and only one) direction. Just keep working, and don't get discouraged!

if it's moving or looks like it's moving, get the essence down before you forget what it looks like (a way of thinking about gesture)
if it's a face, draw it exactly or else it's going to look ugly as hell. try to have the good sense not to copy blindly unless you want to be a human photocopier
if it's too crowded-looking (forest, flower field, rocks with a bunch of cracks), simplify
default approach is to block in the 2D shapes so you get the proportions down then construct with 3d shapes (boxes, cylinders, etc), but try to think more "keys to drawing" and less "slap on textures onto 3d forms it's that easy" so you're not a human 3d modeling program

>> No.3503243

I recommend tracing over his stuff and seeing what it would look like before you copy so you don't get too high of an expectation over what you can do with just contour lines. Otherwise, go for it, it'll build your copying skills, and maybe try to learn something from each copy about how he planned out his work.

Mine's 5000x5000 on SAI and 5000x5000 on PS and 8000x8000 on CSP, it's better to work high because:
>shitty linework is less obvious on downscaling
>resizing/other edits isn't obvious on downscaling
>zooming in an adding details is sharper, you may have noticed that getting thin lines or 1px brushes are shit, most artists downscale instead to get it
>what if you want to use the bigger image later or crop it without the resulting image size being miniscule
Sometimes I also widen the canvas or narrow it and find I have to paint in details later so it's better off to start with room for plenty of width
Use the max size you can handle without the program committing sudoku
