You're right. I;ve been doing Keys to Drawing along the way, and I feel like if I do a drawing of an individual feature (a nose, an ear, an eye) it's not symbol drawing, but when I try to put everything together it turns into that. Oh well, more practice will fix it

you're trying to build a house without any scaffolding.
get into the habit of sketching a loose figure before laying in those details. break down the head and body into the simplest shapes you can, then begin building on top of it. gesture studies by michael hampton may help you here. his lessons on this subject are very easy to absorb, and teach things like flow, landmarks, and line of economy (something i need to improve on myself, honestly)

You have to look closer at what you see, not what you think you know you are drawing. Break things into 2d shapes, dont draw the eye, draw what you see in the photo. Could help to sketch the pic upside down, though your proportions are not incorrect.

Just drop it. Learning to let go of a drawing is just as important a skill as learning to finish them.

It does look pretty good though, I'm sure that you could finish this in one go if you just sat down and put your mind to finishing it. You have all the basic stuff blocked out, it looks like you mainly just need to clean up and render.
But again, if you aren't feeling it, don't bother. Work on something else that you feel and try finishing that instead.

It's a fun exercise, just pick your values for all the planes beforehand and just start playing with the shapes, then add some elements for story purposes.
you can either use brushes or/and custom shapes.

Today is the end of first week of daily hand and feet studies. I do 10 of these a day, my hand and feet game already improved.

Make a few random ass marks with an ink brush and try to develop something that vaguely resembles a composition from it. Then try to do a sketch of the thing you got it to a vague resemblance of and actually attempt a construction, expecting that It'll probably be shit and have things wrong in some way or other which you should note. Then draw it a second time based upon what you learned from trying it out the first time. The result is something that looks loose but is properly constructed and that you can render if you really want to.

The 'pattern for the shadows' is actually just a halftone brush from TrueGritTextureSupply - I highly recommend picking it up (they're not that expensive). 'Halftones' are often used in screen printing to create more ranges of color and values while keeping the color count the same, by using small dots to achieve that. I always enjoyed the look of it and the textures it creates, which is good since I generally like drawing with limited color schemes.
