If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.

You're pretty close but a few things to keep in mind:

- You're working in a painterly style, g-pen-esque linework doesn't work well in this style unless the lines and shapes are particularly strong.

- There are a lot of lines here that look unsure-- they look more like 2nd or 3rd iteration of sketch in quality. You may be zoomed in too far while drawing.

- You may be spending too much time lining and being married to your lineart. I'd suggest working more loosely and iteratively finding your lines for your volumes. That is generally how Rei works and you can see some of it in this shitty weibo quality picture she uploaded some time ago. Just a word of warning, looser doesn't mean more inaccurate, you'll still want to convey the same level of information-- just be ok with destroying it when you find something better.

- Paint over your lines, it will do a lot for cohesion of the piece all together.

- There are some issues with lighting which you may want to work out. Having an early phase which you use to just separate light and dark shapes may help you plan this better. You can also see examples of this in the attached Rei picture on the far-left and in the middle-left.

Nice work overall, keep working at it.

Finally some good criticism, thank you.
I've been using the generic line => clip and paint process from when i began learning how to draw so it's kinda hard to relearn to whole thing in painterly style over again. Gonna take a few months off to do small studies instead of doing big one.
So her process is loosely line to a character to get the basic feel first => paint over and define the lighting => start building all the details from there. Do i get it right?

Rei basically draws a sketch, does an underpainting, refines the sketch, then renders. During the underpainting stage, she's not concerned with staying within the sketch lines-- if painting helps discover a newer, better shape from the sketch then it's an idea that she pursues further. Iterative process basically just means, drawing, painting, drawing, painting back and forth until you come to a satisfactory point where you begin your final rendering process. It's a push and pull basically between drawing and painting. What I meant by saying it looked like a 2nd or 3rd iteration of a sketch is that the lines and forms didn't look strong enough yet. You looked like you were still searching for the forms of certain things (like the gloves, the skirt etc.) so some stuff comes across flatter than they should.

Maybe it's a bit easier to just show you though:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZnE-btFtso

These are quick pieces by attall but you can imagine applying this workflow to a full picture. Skilled artists who are comfortable with this process don't have to do as many iterations since they're so skilled at direct drawing but it's something to think about trying.

I personally like this workflow because... well, I'm pretty awful at drawing and this workflow helps dissociate me from obsessing endlessly over lines which, by the time I reach rendering, end up being all wrong anyway. Line, clip, and paint is not a bad process either but it definitely demands better drawing skills from the outset-- you could easily just continue with what you're doing now and then implement an overpainting pass which would also get good results. It's a bit harder to get an organic look like the attached Rei picture with this method but not impossible of course.

Jo Fang does this workflow and it looks great, though at some point he usually ditches his lineart layer:

It just takes a different mode of thought. Painting and drawing require different considerations so being able to switch thought processes can help a lot when you're having trouble "figuring out a problem". You do need some semblance of fundamentals and understanding though-- it may be less useful if you need to guess a lot since the idea is to help yourself grasp your composition/painting/perspective/etc. If you don't know what to look for it may be a difficult.

>>3497956
Yes, pretty much. Doesn't really matter where you start. You could go from drawing to painting to drawing. You could go from painting to drawing to painting. You can do it for the whole painting or just a little piece you're having trouble with. It's pretty flexible and it's not like you have to do things in a certain order-- mostly just wanted to shed some light on processes that don't get it right the first time which is strangely what a lot of people think happens when people paint.

What do you personally think is interesting about this drawing? If you can't come up with anything, how can we?

As far as I'm concerned it's some girl clad in relatively typical pink showgarb, floating on a completely blank grey background in a pose that's either sitting on the floor leaning back or maybe floating or ????, holding a weapon, except they're not swinging it, or pointing it at anything, and it's certainly not in a defensive pose either. They're just kind of holding it. It adds no gesture to the static pose and has no relation to the scene or even her outfit. To me it seems thrown in there for no other reason other than "oh it'd be boring if she wasn't holding anything."

There's nothing really special or interesting about what you've set up, even before we get to whether or not it's drawn well on a technical level.

The pose I referenced from a drawing of the character where she isn't in a background so I wasn't sure about that either.. I need to practice putting character in a background properly. With her sword you're right, I could've had her actually using it rather than holding it. I added it because the character usually has it.

Dude the first problem to fix should be the lineart. A lineart like this will NEVER look like somehting someone would want to buy. A lot of people can look past horrible anatomy and basic colors but lineart like that just looks like scribbles.
3 Things:
Don't have your lineart and colors on the same layer.
Dont Chickenscratch, use a single continuous stroke for one line and not multiple lines layered on top of eachother.
Dont use a brush with opacity lower than 100% if you are making lineart.

And in general, CLEAN THAT SHIT UP. What the fuck dude, the fingers on the right side have their color and outline blended together and other places where your colors mix horribly with the outlines and with eachother, you have multiple lines crossing into arreas they shouldnt be in. The line from the upper arm intersecting with the lines of the lower line. The line you used to show the abdomen crosses into the shirt. Fucking christ if you are not gonna put in any effor then why sell it. You cant draw really well but that is not your biggest problem if you want to SELL your art.

>> No.3501702

His lines are way better, just because hes using way thinner lines that get overshadowed by the coloring, and he uses single lines and not ugly chicken scratches or multiple lines layered on top of each other.
And at the very least this is porn, and he does seem to have appealing porn anatomy which usually distracts from flaws by A LOT.
tldr its way cleaner and barely noticeable compared to the other dudes lineart. Also its appealing porn anatomy so the normies go blind.

Compare the angle of the body in your pic and the reference again. Then try this arm gesture on yourself (you can do it while sitting in front of your computer) and see how far your hand can reach compared to your torso.

So i did a render study following your advices, rendering from rei's block of color.
-I really liking it so far, this kind of work process is more free and is more fitting compare to the line one.
-Although it's kinda a pain in the ass to fix things if i overpaint because there's no clip and everything is on 1 layer only. Here it's okay because there're only a few things to render but what if i draw more stuffs?
Do i have to fix everything if i overpainted one thing? That's kind of maddeningly tedious desu.
Again, thank you so much for your advices, i learned alot.

they're trying to tell you to use reference in things you don't know how to draw.
If you don't want to use ref for this drawing then go do some practice reference from different angles or some clothing practice and come back to that drawing with the new knowledge you have obtained.

not sure if this general is what I'm looking for, but I have a question. how is this really cartooned style called? with strong and large outer lines and simple/clean, well defined design. some old cartoons have this style, like Billy and Mandy and PPG. and some games like Puyo Puyo Tetris and Mario Paper. I'm thinking in using it for my game based on pokémon, and would like tips to know how to use it correctly

Also, Retro-style animation. Basically it's highly stylized stuff from the 40s-50s you are looking for, because that was the inspiration for the "flat" shows of the 90s-2000s like PPG, Dexters Lab, Billy and Mandy, Samurai Jack and Fairly Oddparents.
