IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I can't just draw for some reason.
I've been fascinated with art for years and constantly tried to develop the habit on and off since I as a kid, and after falling into a deep (diagnosed) depression upon starting university that's set me back a few years, I've finally gotten down to focusing on what I'd really like to do, and art is one of them. For some reason, I can't focus on anything, though. I can work for pay fine, but when it comes to developing the skills I desire, art being one of the three, I get antsy and restless whenever I try, and I'm always constantly demotivated despite by better knowledge that there's nothing wrong with starting at my age. I can only focus on anything, not specifically art, for about 30 minutes before I get physically uncomfortable and my output diminishes greatly. I don't know if it's depression, ADHD (my dad has it but I never tested for it) or me subconsciously wanting to fail.
I'm currently working through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, but I can only manage about two exercises a day. I'm not in uni again until August, so I have the free time to grind for hours a day, and I don't even enjoy the time I spend dicking around instead, but I physically can't bring myself to just draw. Any advice? Even if that advice is "JUST DRAW"

Even so, it wouldn't explain the loss of my ability to work on the other two skills without feeling overwhelmed.

I don't know what your drawing experience is, but if you don't have a lot of it with traditional, you should stick to that for a while. When I started, I knew I wanted to do things digitally in the end so I just started on a tablet, but it's just not very satisfying to draw on a tablet (or even a screen tablet). Some people think traditional first is a meme and they probably have their reasons, but it was really good for me. It cut out a lot of distractions, and the feeling of laying down physical material is very satisfying (which can help with motivation for practicing).

Weird question: do the skills you use while learning traditional/digital art translate to pixel art?
Or is pixel art significantly different from "normal" art, and require a different set of skills to make work?

I suppose the core of the question is: How much of the fundamentals translate into pixel art, and how many need to be reevaluated to fit the medium?

Understanding light and form (and color theory) especially will translate into pixel art. The best pixel artists have a firm understanding of form. Depending on what you want to do, composition is also an important principle to understand. I can’t think of anything that will undergo a notable transformation or won’t translate at all. New skills may be required (anti aliasing is tedious and pixel art in general makes me want to blow my brains out but it’s also satisfying when you make it work) but that’s true for any new medium like learning to use oil paint or watercolor

i guess this would be the best thread to post this

I am going to need some constructive rip and tear on my over-ambitious piece. ill give a quick summary but i dont want to bog you in detail. i wanted to create a piece about a golem based on mexican folklore. i wanted it to raise alebrije (colorful fantastical creatures, painted on wood or clay) from the sands with its maracas.

biggest things that hit me are that it appears confusing instead of colorful, and that the values just arent cohesive. i dont necessarily need to save the piece, but i want to know what i did wrong so i can study it in detail next. i also think it looks more like evening and not night time, despite references of the desert at night i was using looking rather bright.
please help me become a better artist!

I'm not one of those. I'm a STEM grad but if I wasn't able to work ODEs, then I'd have dropped out of college and gone in the trades. Tradesmen really don't work that much. a 40 hour work week is pretty much the norm. I've talked to HVAC guys and electricians and plumbers on /pol/. They always say the job is comparatively easy compared to other trades, but some electricians have to be at the job site at 5AM in the cold and rain. I haven't hear of any HVAC or plumbers complain about that.

>'supposedly'' lower social status as a trade guy lol

I mean, do you consider 100k a year doing a real job fixing shit to be lower social status? You'd rather get a liberal arts degree and work sales for 50k a year, with a human resources department breathing down your neck 24/7?

Honestly /pol/ is a great place for career advice. They'll tell you which fields are saturated with immigrant labor and which aren't. You're not allowed to talk about that on any other website.

I would write you a long motivational post but it's very late (early). If you're a young adult and you're a citizen of a developed country, and you're not totally mentally compromised (i don't mean meme mental issues, i mean like manic and delusional episodes), it is actually very easy to remake yourself for the better. Get a trade cert, get a roommate or move in with your parents, and save up money. Learn to invest. Be very careful about it. Mostly avoid debt and unhealthy habits i.e. excessive spending (debt is bad), smoking, drinking, wanton sex (usually costly, but also bad for body and mind), etc.

Don't draw until you have your life figured out. You won't enjoy it. I hate looking at my art but Im in a good place in my life so it doesnt bother me as much as it would if I spent most of my day in despair.

Hey man you need to give yourself a break, you're not gonna get anywhere if you're pre-occupied with self-loathing even if you do draw a lot.
Don't draw mindlessly, make smaller achievable goals and work directly towards them.
Study. Drawing without studying is like building a house without a plan.

Judging from that image here's some things to focus on.
-Clean up your line, think more about what you want to put down on paper and only move your pencil once you know what you want. (this can be extremely frustrating tho cause early on you don't know what you want)
-Do short gestures to help focus on whats important, short gestures are the key to what makes 90% of the figure read.
-tackle simple forms cylinders/boxes

Also don't judge the end-result, acknowledge it for what it is and move on, otherwise you're just gonna get sucked back into a bottomless pit of self-hatred and depression.

try just drawing that skull on the belt a few times and then move on when you feel it looks reasonably like the skull. i personally wouldn't want to try to learn to copy from this image either because it is very dark and hard to see contour, definitely try more simple images. like pic related, even if you have done it before the entire point of the exercise is to just train your eyes to look for 'references' on the image. also i would recommend you drew with a pencil and paper first. ive never used a drawing pad before but that is the advice i hear a lot around here, im assuming drawing while not looking at your hand is another thing entirely and is really something you should only do try once youve gotten the basics down

self critique is very important. Knowing what you are doing wrong is the key to improving. Most beginners come here post a shitty drawing and act like its good and have no idea how to improve it.

>I fucked the eyes up, the mouth, the hair, the shape of the face, there's no depth to it. It's less than rubbish.
then fix them, if you dont know how to just look it up. Look at "professional" drawings and compare them to yours, theres always good info you can learn just by looking and comparing, see what they did to create depth and try to recreate it. you should focus on anatomy and line quality first though.

Just set a goal for yourself that's easily achievable, tiny steps. If your goal is to paint/draw like Ruan Jia or whoever you look up to, its very easy to get demotivated when you draw something because you dont see any improvement when looking at the big picture
Focus on one thing at a time, what bothers you the most on your work? if its the anatomy, work on it, if its your line quality, work on it, etc etc

I've tried shifting her pupil, iris, and entire eye left, right, up, down, I even tried making it bigger and smaller but no luck. How do I make her right eye look straight at the camera or any suggestions on how to fix it?

Also I know her right arm is completely fucked and I found a tutorial on how to fix that, hopefully it will work but I'm open if anyone has any personal tips or tutorials that helped them with that kind of stuff.

Question about figure/gesture drawing.. am I doing these right? Pic related is 30sec poses, I just want to make sure if someone new to figure drawing is suppose to be able to add more detail within that time limit or if that's about what one would expect given that amount of time?

This is coming from someone who's working through learning how to construct things with basic shapes, but haven't got to put shapes together to form humans yet. (still going through organic forms and dissecting them.) I haven't even got into anatomy or proportion/placement study yet.

In gestures what you want is to achieve the motion of the pose, capture the action, your figures are looking stiff. They're still decent, and don't fret about it desu, it's just practice, it's tedious but undestanding the motions behind a pose will help you greatly when drawing off your head.

Gotcha, I think the time limit might be too quick for me at 30secs. I find that I'm barely just getting the lines shown within that limit, which I assume is normal for someone new to it..

Is there any decent videos that help understand what to be doing as a starting point? My mindset is stuck in construction mode and on top of the speed, it seems to overwhelm me easily..

The vertical one is the motion, the two horizontal lines are the hip and shoulders, a dynamic pose will always have hip and shoulders have opposite orientations. entirely depends on what your hardware is like and what youre trying to do. if you are just trying to gain line confidence then you need to find the setting that eliminates the line wobble due to hardware sensitivity errors, without effecting your actual stroke. try comparing your on screen stroke with a real life paper stroke. it will never be an exact science especially if you don't have a screen tablet (looking at your hand while drawing does actually change the way you do it)

This is cool dude, yeah you could push your values a bit, and you definitely missed some darker values around the neck area and the left side of the face. Fix that and you'd have a sick drawing.

I guess I was pushing for a tall thin type while the overall proportions were more leading to a chubby-ish type

Not anything specific honestly. I just want to learn how to use appealing colors off the top of my head. I'd be happy to use them all if you're willing to show me but I know it won't be possible. In that case just pick either the best one in your opinion for a beginner of color or at random.

To clarify I know the 'basics' of color theory, like how a few colors complement/compliment eachother, but I want to learn to use them without following the the boring scremes I usually do which is complementary colors.

Help me fix the guy on the right? I wish I had a model for reference but no one was available so I had to draw from imagination.

Cool face but the body is too straight. You need to draw a line of motion and then build the body from there.
