Not him, but the side mouth thing was literally only invented as an animation technique to make it easier to animate characters in profile. And it isn't even used all that much in anime anymore. The rest is just stylistic choices that look perfectly fine and don't look any more or less ridiculous than if you tried to put say Mignola or Bruce Timm or Disney facial features on real humans.

What many dunning krugers don't understand is that breaking a line that represent 2 forms pressing against each other is a line weight concept to give something more believability. The (closed) mouth in anime isn't just a line, but a simplified representation of upper and lower lip pressing against each other. It's the exact same concept as for example when you have 2 breasts being pressed together. The side mouth thing kind of evolved from that same concept too, but then was pushed to extremes out of laziness / budget to make it easier on animators.

the first one and side mouth are bad and only works on maybe more extreme sylize moments.
the missing middle part is just to show where the lips connect the most kind of like how you see people drawing boobs squished together with thinner lines or the line disappear in the middle. and the last one is just suppose to show the lip gap not the actual lips being squished into that small space

I think the main strengths of the anime style are twofold:
>has a realistic human body, no bauhaus BS or anthro
>uses stylized face that appeals to the brain's incredibly strong pareidolia to create idealized expressions
Admittedly there isn't much diversity in the faces and character designs but it tends to work reasonably well repeatedly

you can soften a line to give the illusion something is more in the background compared to something that's more in the foreground like >>3490489 see that the line in the middle of the lip is darker because the middle of the lip comes forward more compared to the sides hence it creates a slightly darker shadow on the bottom lip
