IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

→ →
There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

try posing like that in the mirror. make your back a complete profile shot while pushing your left arm backwards , dont forget to try to show your deltoids like in your pic, and facing your butt in that position. I personally think anyone would find this difficult to do. But putting all of that aside, her upper back doesn't have any bone definition, where the hell is her scapula, that line you placed below the armpit isnt gonna cut it, since the spine of the scapula, is the one that protrudes the most and its definitley not placed there. last thing, the lumbar spine is not connected to sacral spine(it should be connected)

"Faded" means unfinished. One of the most important habits you need to get into is being able to properly place your object on any given space no matter the size. even if it means you have to do a bunch of gestural sketches and re erase them until it fully fits on the page, it takes work but it will improve you body of work.

You are going to have to break some bad habits.
1. Build up your line confidence. You are using small lines to control the form, but end result is messy. Grab a pen and start drawing lines, circles, and shapes so that you have confidence in controlling your lines.
2. You got the placement of the features but the features themselves still need work. Study up how other artist like loomis and such handle eyes, nose, mouths, ect.

I've never owned one so I can't say for sure. I can make some guesses about how it might be worse than a wacom.

It could have some latency, which doesn't render the device useless but is pretty annoying. I've tried all kinds of wacoms and they all have really low latency.

It probably has a worse screen, but I'm sure 90% of people don't need a screen as good as a wacom. For instance I don't think I would every draw in color, so a wacom would be overkill for me. Also you can always look at some art you know has good color on your xp pen display and use it for reference. I use the same principle for audio: if I want it to sound like steely dan, I don't need the same equipment they used, I just need to listen to steely dan on my setup and compare.

You could be more likely to get a dead on arrival device, which is no big deal if you aren't in a hurry. Cheaper quality assurance in manufacturing usually brings the price way down.

It could have support for less operating systems. I don't know any details about that, it's a total guess.

In my opinion, unless you are making money from your drawings there's no reason to get a wacom display if you can barely afford it. I use a wacom intuos basic because I just started drawing myself. I only know anything about graphics tablets because I worked in a library for a long time with all kinds of wacom cintiqs and whatnot.

don't bother getting a screen tablet if you cant afford a cintiq
tilt sensitivity doesn't really matter if youre not using brushes that utilize tilt.
but there are things that do matter, the color gamut is PROBABLY going to be fucked, what this means is what you see will not be what most viewers see. do research to find out reviews on this produce/what the color is like/sensitivity/sturdiness ( obviously youre not gonna throw it at a wall, but if it breaks for everyone 3 weeks in youll want to know).

my opinion is not to waste money on a screen tablet that's only 200 dollars. something wrong there. if youre serious about art but cant afford a cintiq, just get a non-screen tablet. if youre not serious about art and want it for funsies (I mean why spend money like that at all on a tablet in that case..?) then I guess go for it and suffer through the issues that will inevitably crop up

Opinion: Drawing hips as if they are a box like that can be good for starting out but it translate to making the butt like tense and flat. I would use a more rounded shape with a flat surface on the front. I draw a circle for how big I want the hips, then leg holes then cut the circle about 3/4 up then flatten the front of it to make sure my hips can look curved at any angle.

You have a good understanding of how muscles connect so I assume you are sketches those out during your process. keep it up brah.

it seems you are getting there but are having trouble understand what these shapes are in a 3d sense. The jaw is going to act like a hoof (for now). When the head looks up there is a surface under it you are not including that makes connecting it to the neck awkward.

In other words, you are putting a paper mask on a circle. support that mask with another structure to connect it to the neck.

Your facial features have no anchor point so when you go to draw them they don't match. For now, just put dots or plus signs where you know a feature would go then work from there. if you have to, put those anchor points on your own face, then look in the mirror as you tilt and swivel your head and pay attention to how those points move.

All of them show signs of skewing but being aware of it is good so you know what to practice. If you're working on paper I find it helps to take pictures of your work to check it so you can see it with a different eye and fix issues like that. You're doing well, only other thing I'd say is next time just try to group these onto one image instead of posting 5 times (I appreciate them being the right size dimensionwise and filesize). Feels like you flattened the skull a bit in sketchbook07. I would recommend against smudging for shading as in the scapula.

like, dots on your face with a washable marker that your having trouble drawing. so dots on the sides and tops of the mouth nose and eyes. tilt your head and angle it slowly and see how close or far away the dots are from each other to see how they move along the same plane in relation to your skull and neck. I only started getting a grasp on hands by literally drawing shapes all over them and seeing how they moved on my hand while in motion. Helped a ton.

>>3480179
see pic, sorry it's poop quality.
so you establish leg holes in a sphere for leg approximation. Then you slice the top off of it. Then you slice a bit of the front off of it. There ya go, you now have a shape can loosely resemble the hips. once you understand that shape you can toy around with angles and perspectives. but don't leave it as is or you'll have a weird bubble butt. but the rounded shape on the back end can show you how much the angled surface can carry nd what way it would carry it at any given angle.

>> No.3480413

>>3480220
honestly these are pretty good for 2 weeks of anatomy. You rely a ton on lines. Your line work is good but because you don't use line weight, your going to have a harder time understand form and shading. Using line weight to establish volume, implied tension, even texture will help you down the line.

But you are a beginner, so don't sweat it. Just something to think about as a next step of progression.

pressure, tension, and angle. your gestural work should already be faint and wispy. Best way to practice line weight is by drawing a bunch of lines and seeing how various amounts of pressures affect them. So lines that go from pressing hard to lifting up off the page in one stroke. Get to a point where you can confidently and intentionally make lines that go from thick to whispy or other way around. It's boring yes, but fundimentals always are.

I spent a lot of spare time sketching with a ball point pen which encourages you to sketch your gesturals by hardly touching the paper. That could be a not so boring first step.

You can trace over a line again only if you think you can replicate the same exact stroke, other ways your lines will look like fuzzy split ends.

It's close.

The nose is all wrong - look at the volume, and the shapes. You don't have nostrils, which dictate the shape. The end of the nose is a volume, and hers is ball shaped - you have none. You have the philtrim wrong (the crease below the nose).

Draw her teeth. They shape the lips. You don't have to draw them 100% accurately, but they need to be there.

Her eyes are the wrong shape.

The cheek on the left side is wrong, she has high cheek bones, you have none.

Her chin is rounded, and slighty cleft. You have neither, and made it pointed.

The eyebrows are too low - and missing on the left side.

The angle of the jaw is wrong.

The shape of the lower lip is narrower.

The hair is a cop out. At least capture the part where the hair is pulled back, and her bangs.

Overall, her face feels too pinched.

Again, it's close. LOOK at the photo. This looks like a case of symbol drawing and a lack of interest in putting the same study and work into all parts of the face.

Try putting the drawing over the photo, and lower the transparency, and see where you goofed.

After that, work on your line quality more - line width can indicate weight and shadow, so the edge contour lines shouldn't be the same weight as the jawline. Consider places where you don't need a line, like the area between her jaw and ear, where you can visually imply a line for the viewer, but not actually draw it. That's part of being an artist - translating reality into a line - or a lack of one.

>> No.3481075

>>3478814
- Draw bigger!

- Learn to draw longer, sweeping lines. Look for S curves. The feel your'e looking for is flow. Your lines don't show confidence. That's something that you learn the more you draw, but in the beginning you can pay more attention to it.

- Drapery is one of the more challenging things to draw/paint, but you need to look more at the forms and draw the edges and shapes. You're not really doing that, you're synbol drawing what you think is there. I would find better references, or just make your own, by hanging a piece of cloth over something, and drawing it - this photo is above your skill level. Start simple with drapery, figure out how it works.

- start centering your work on the page, and draw the whole figure - especially when you have a full figure photo. We all get it, feet are hard, and this drapery is complicated - but get into the habit of treating every drawing as a composition, and it's place on the page, like trying to have equal margins on all sides. It's good practice, and you'll develop your compositional skills.

- I'll be honest, this isn't the best reference, from the waist down. This angle, it all just looks awkward, even as a photo.

Color pickers tend to average several pixels and values, so other than ball park, this is a bad approach. Skin has more to it than the simple colors you're using, unless you're going for a posterized effect. There are endless tutorials on skin on the internet, go read some more, and learn to build skin tones, and how to figure out what they are with your eye, not the color picker.

Another thing to keep in mind is that skin has cool hues, and warm hues. Post-processing on photos tends to equalize/dull these, which is why working with a model in person is always better, but you can learn to see it or approximate it using artistic licence. Warm and cool colors create the visual cues we see that indicate/create the illusion of depth, and lighting. What most artists do is experiment, by trying different things, until they get a feel for how it works. Skin is not "pink", or "beige", it usually has most of the spectrum in it, depending on the lighting.

This photo is edited, with a "glamour/fashion" treatment, to remove hair and freckles and other imperfection, which also dulls out a lot of the reflected light and shadows, and on top of that, you're not seeing the color that's still there, like the red in the nose. Most noses (unless covered in makeup or edited) are slightly redder than the surrounding flesh, because it's more capillary, it has more blood flow. The shadows have been edited, but adding blue to it, or green, would be the right approach, not the flat browns you're picking.

All pretty common beginner mistakes. Stop using the color picker, and LOOK at faces and where colors are. Seeing color has to be learned - a lucky few can do it naturally, but most have to train in it. Stop using fashion/edited photos, and work with real people if at all possible, and LOOK at the colors you see. If you have the opportunity, go to a museum and look at how the masters handled skin, I think you'll be surprised at what you find.

Always study from life man, ignore anime trash because you're skipping all the basics and fundamentals.
Get an image you like the look of and redraw it once or twice in a set amount of time, say 10 minutes. Make sure to finish it if you can no matter how terrible and janky the proportions and angles look.
At first you'll probably hate them because they will look bad, however the point to these aren't making masterpieces. What you're doing is recalibrating your brain to actually understand what it's looking at and be able to translate what it sees and thinks more accurately to what it tells you hands to do.
Our eyes and brain did not evolve to draw nice pictures and it usually oversimplifies colours and shapes while blurring it together to optimise fast responses and danger recognition over acknowledging details. That's why treelines become blurred and people often think shadows are black when they can be any shade and gradient.

Good luck

something that may help is measure the eye line (and any other angle such as the invisible line from the corner of the eye to the start of the ear) with your pen like sit back like 2 feet or arms length if you can and measure the angle of the eyes/mouth with the edge of your pen. artists holding pencils and shit up and closing one eye isnt just a meme, its a tool to help measure proportions and angles

I tried to do female poses

I have no idea if this is done well or not, can I get someone else's opinion on the overall poses as well as some form of critique on them? I would greatly appreciate it.
