Hi, DAD. Happy father's day.

Meditating on deleting the 1000 pages challenge, but I'd like some feedback on that.

The challenge lasts 30 days. Assuming 8 hours of free time (and that's being generous as hell), that's a little more than 33 pages a day, and 4 pages an hour, which amounts to 15 minutes a page if you want to complete it.

I don't like the idea of challenges that encourage excess quantity over learning and creativity. Moreover, it's utterly directionless outside of "draw a lot", which is redundant to the ethos of "draw every day" besides ramping up the 30 minute requirement. The badge even doesn't make sense, it's a prestige 3 for submitting to the challenge on each day.

Bottom line: I don't think people will gain much from it. Yes, increasing the volume of work that you do is important, but this challenges is probably going to cause people to develop more bad habits than good.

Anyone else have an opinion on this? I'll be reading your responses later.

Judging by the response from the creator, it seems like they are fully willing to increase their own output, but the parameters of the challenge make no sense and encourage high volume, low quality work. It is fine for them to do so on their own time, but should a challenge be made for such an endeavor, there should be more direction/something that sets it apart from just "draw a lot".

I think it's generally hard to remedy something like this without actually going fully into community management, but I think some of the following ideas would help bring the community closer together, although I am certain they will be very unpopular.

Fully embrace the idea that there is always an opportunity to catch up. Also lessens the blow from fucking up and missing a day. lolbuns, for example, hasn't posted since losing his streak, likely because he's aware it's gonna take him 70 days to get back to his streak and by that time everyone (still remaining) is going to be 70 days ahead.
>heavily moderate challenges
Challenges could be used as community events where rather than saying "don't take part if you don't like it", you would encourage absolutely everyone to participate. No marathon challenges as they have proven to make lassies half-ass their submissions, which is not in the spirit of LAS. Challenges should also be staggered enough that you can participate in all of them and still have plenty of time for your normal stuff. They should never be redundant in nature - no super specific instructions or courses like DAB.

Gamification is great in theory but badges not only create a divide and serve as a fake status symbol, they also make a lot of lassies lose sight of their goal of actually gitting gud while playing the badger game instead. In combination with limiting challenges, replace badges with the tried and true collages and display them on the site.

Small bit of leeway, 1 per month or 1-3 per season would be more than sufficient and would account for problems with internet, overtime, falling asleep, etc.

As someone has mentioned, it is healthy to take a short break every once in a while to refocus. You could introduce a "pre-season" of 1-3 days before every season. This would also create a window for lassies to come back in time.

anything comparing dads is another form of list to me, since it's a showcase of setting beginners by veterans in their comfort zone by veterans outside of it, emphasizing how 'good' each's work is. the worse your work looks to me the better it often is because that means you're working on something way outside your comfort zone. it discourages us from taking risks because again the 'quality' of the pieces shown will be judged against others'.

i dont really like or dislike badges as they are, just like the idea of open ended badges that cycle out like every six months or so that aren't time based, that you can submit to whenever you like in order to get the quota before its lifespan goes, like i've seen suggested a lot around here.

I literally just learned of this today and it made lots of sense to me. The idea being that you want to spend your drawing time making lots of sketches of a leg (not entirely dependent on references) instead of polishing a single leg and making it look exactly like the ref. So in one sitting, you drew 20 legs instead of only one. Multiply this by hundreds of times and we have a big difference in training. You'll easily be able to draw a leg because you've already drawn that leg thousands of times, from every conceivable angle. That's not to say that quantity beats quality, it's just a exercise that needs to be done every day.
A analytical person thinks before doing, a intuitive person just does. Analytical people put themselves down with doubts while a intuitive person enjoys the process.

I think, if the streak is truly a concern for drop-out DADs, that DAD add some way to actually climb the leaderboard besides streaks.
Like, actually move past people that may have a higher "streak" through other means that require effort, dedication or proof of work consistently well beyond the needed most basic 30 minutes a day.

Because, as it stands, a person with a 20 streak will ALWAYS be behind a person with a 21 streak. The only way this scenario changes is if the 21 streaker literally fucking dies.
It doesn't matter if the 20 streaker is stretching well beyond their limits and pumping out 8 hours of masterpieces and participating in 5,000 challenges at the same time, if the guy with 21 is just coasting along, doing the bare minimum, some few scribbles and calling it a day, 20 will never overtake 21.
They're both submitting daily and they're both well disciplined at submitting every day, yet it is impossible for the one that is obviously putting in several more worlds of effort into practicing their art and participating in the community to ever beat someone that started 1 day or more before them.
A system that doesn't allow the one that puts more effort or participates more to climb and only focuses on the basic streak is a system that, in essence, just rewards those that started earlier.

The thing is, we already have at least one thing that could be used as some gauge of extra participation. Challenges. If completion of challenges allowed one to climb the leaderboard, even by just a tiny bit, then you have now opened a path by which those that dropped out can now hope to eventually overtake the ones that are ahead, the ones that don't look like they're dying any time soon, the ones doing the bare minimum to keep their streak alive.
