>What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.

This almost looks neat but you gave him weird short arms and stiff unmatching legs. If we cut off his legs and arms it would be a solid drawing.

I don't have my tablet hooked up and i'm too lazy to set it up, but here's the gist of some things to work on: perspective, overall proportion, roundness of limbs. Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention that I can tell you prefer drawing faces over the form. Is your sketchbook full of faces from the bust or even neck up? Cut it out. It shows in your drawing. The face is very solid and shows a definite style, but it's obvious you're drawing the full form maybe 10% of the time. Post others?

not that artist, but i don't see what you're saying. the breasts are stylized, and not great, but not the worst for the style. the angle of the pelvis is plausible, but the pelvis itself is too long and low on the right figure.

gotcha. i'm not sure whether you're going for gesture or construction with these but my advice for construction is to try and draw the shapes of the things you're seeing. arms and legs are sets of connecting cylinders. feet and hands are flat boxes. head is a long sphere. you get the idea. everything is made of shapes. they are your building blocks. use them to construct your figure then go in for the detail work. i think you will see an immediate improvement in drawings like the one you posted!

I was talking about the lack of this line, as in the back of the ribcage, like I said. His waist started at his breast instead of where it should be. I wasn't talking about the right figure at all.

Yeah, but it's clear that they have little control of the line weight, especially where it tapers at the ends. It's pretty difficult to achieve good line weight with that kind of brush setting, and if you want to make something taper off like that, then you're better off just erasing parts of the lineart instead of having to deal with a brush that goes to 0% minimum size.

This is the type of response I'd expect from someone with very few practice hours under their belt and no classical training. When you have more experience you'll be able to recognize the skill of artists even from their rough drawings/sketches. It's easy to tell when someone is comfortable whipping up a face (confident lines, placement is solid, style present) but has an obvious issue with anatomy (chicken scratch, one leg is bigger/longer than the other, poorly stylized feet that don't match the rest of the drawing and are simple because artist is not confident).

There's clearly a very good knowledge of form and shading present here, but she still looks a bit too blocky due to the strong transitions of the shadows. Try blending out some of the rounder forms a bit more.

>Blog threads
>Tumblr threads
>Sakimichan/Kr0n circlejerks
>Ruan Jia fanposting
>"Art" Feels threads
We can speculate that the threads from the Tumblr/Blog posts causes a clear contingent of normies (for a lack of better term) flocking in and immediately treat /ic/ as their Twitter account by refuting a critique with their feelings. In other words, unless you sugar coat and give praise and adoration to their posted material you will find that the poster would quickly become defensive and escalate to an argument over their feelings. Moreover we have these same normies that actually complain if they do not receive a (you) from posting work as if its an upboat or a like and feel entitled to attention as if this is their Fagbook wall or something. Aside from putting fee-fee's first and getting butthurt we also have these other general threads with their own communities that differ the modus operandi of the board by eliminating critiques all together and encourage the hugbox environment by posting an OC and having others redraw it "in their own style" which in turn becomes a glorified Deviant Art forum blog.

The evidence of the hugbox environment is clear when you see material such as >>3471491 with the OP feeling proud about it to the point they post it proclaiming their pride and glee. If you observe those tumblr/blog and
"redraw this" threads you will find that many are confined to those general threads and maybe once in a blue moon they will stray away after receiving multiple asspats as if they think they're good enough to post outside of their safespaces and the result is >>3471491 hence why I said you faggots reap what you sow for encouraging these micro communities mentioned above.

There's been several arguments in the past that these forms of unconditional praises and adoration only inhibits one from further developing good draftsmanship and leaves one oblivious to their faults which leads me to believe that these so called "Crabs" are a necessity.

You try copying your favorite artist? Boxes help with perspective and loomis heads help with drawing heads from imagination and the mechanics of how a head works, measurements and spacial relation of each facial feature. If you have a favorite animu artist try to copy what they drew and try to accurately copy each line and "line weight" of what youre copying. Accurately measuring and copying will help you get a jist of how to replicate their "style." Actually way too vague.
I was drawing torsos from imagination but they're pretty crap, I don't really know them well enough. I understand I can't get better at them by repeatedly drawing them from imagination, but I don't know how to go about learning them from reference. I sit and draw figures a lot but I feel I'm not actually taking in any information about it. Is there some specific method in which I should learn from reference or something?

I construct story based on scenes and interactions that I would like to draw and work backwards.

I was imagining a scene where she unexpectedly lost her power, and wriggling out of her armor while a mundane boy snark at her with reasoning similar to yours. Then, the boy help her, with some difficulty, carries her equipment to some place safe, and she is moved. It was someone whom she had been protecting for a short while, but now situation is kind of reversed. I don't know, I just wanted to work in that romance in there. Magic is ubiquitous in her background, but she was put in a situation where it isn't.

>> No.3473858

>>3473852
when you say clipping im assuming youre talking about clipping masks which, involve 2 layers on a single area. which is sparingly used. painting everything separately has its own uses(like animating with spine), otherwise you dont need to go further than having your main subjects on different layers aka background foreground middleground. you can just use your lasso tool/other selections to control your areas on a single layer.

>> No.3473864

>>3473852
I'd say it depends on needs and preferences. For instance if you were coloring a picture of someone wearing something semi transparent like stockings or sunglasses maybe, it would be very useful to have the color of their skin and eyes on one layer and the color of the transparent material on another one so you could change the transparency of that layer and make it see-through without affecting what's below. Other times it just helps with precision. Once I was coloring a picture of Ryuko Matoi and since her hair and armor were all the same base color and overlapped it was hard to select just the specific parts I wanted to work on to be able to render them individually. I used another method, but that was an instance where I could have put her hair and armor on separate layers for ease of access. All roads lead to Rome, it really comes down to how you want to get there.

>> No.3473886

Why would you even start rendering this? Even you can realize yourself that an arm is off. You've just thrown 8 hours of your life away literally trying to polish a turd.

Hopefully you can learn from this terrible mistake and create actual quality linework before you even think about rendering or even blocking in values. If the linework doesn't look fantastic, rendering will make it look even worse.

>> No.3474137

>>3474134
Hm, is the ribcage too long, or is not in the right perspective? Not placing the neck correctly, do you mean its too high up or not properly centered? I am guessing you are saying the breast are sagging too much or improperly shaped? While its your prerogative not to redline, it would be helpful to be a little more specific.

>> No.3474155

>>3474134
i'd say a bit of both since the natural position for me at least is to lean a bit back (also causing the supporting arm to angle backwards as well) .
breasts dont convey any form at all, and their insertion is better indicated by a line into the peck instead of into the delt
the neck is off center, but more obviously not connecting to the head properly
im guessing the lower body is what you used ref for. overall, i think the pose is what fucked you up the most. i draw torsos mainly, and seeing an upright torso with a lower abdomen that faces almost directly upwards is a bit off-putting.
