Scott McCloud explained it on his book "Understanding Comics."

Basically: the more simpler the face, the more people are gonna identify with it.
When we begin to go into details, we start to recognize things as specific, and therefore, not-belonging to us.

For example, take Nick Fury from the Ultimate Marvel comics. We can clearly see that he's Samuel Jackson, not us, so he's a person on his own.
Now take Mickey Mouse. Even through he's a mouse we identify with him because his face is just a couple of dots and a mouth (in other words, non-specific), which allows people to reflect themselves on him.

We as humans have a very, VERY sketchy view of our faces, given that we don't see it very often, so all that sticks to us is the basic locations of the face, nose, ears and mouth. The very basics.
Fill these basics with simple details and you've got a familiar face for almost every human.

This is why manga faces are very simplistic.

3468887

>>3468862
Another interesting effect of this is drawing simple characters with realistic backgrounds, this is known as the "masking effect."

Simple characters for people to identify with, coupled with realistic objects for people to be surrounded with and use.

Given that: more details = less self-identification, there's no harm in making backgrounds and objects very specific and detailed, given that we're not gonna identify ourselves with them. They're for our use.
Having a simplified human in an specific world helps feel the world feel real and tangible. The interaction between characters and objects becomes believable.

That's the reason why manga backgrounds are usually very detailed and realistic.

Sakimichan's faces are much closer to Disney with a slight anime influence.
OP pic has a full on anime face and is probably by a Japanese artist.

That's not super relevant though, anime and heavily anime-influenced styles both tend towards a stylized face and realistic body (body might have some slight style based deformations like small hands/feed, long limbs and possibly big tiddy)

Appeal is a very elusive concept. Intermediate fundies junkies (a sizeable portion of /ic/ in my estimation) tend to look at all art through the lens of how many anatomy and perspective flaws they can spot. If they can spot a few errors they gain a sense of superiority and decide that the work is "shit", totally disregarding the fact that it potentially has appeal despite it's technical flaws. I think it's a phase everyone has to go through who is serious about art but it doesn't make it any less short sighted.

Why does it bother you? Besides its part of the anime style, your brain is supposed to realize what the features all resemble when you view it as a whole, realize where the depth is where the nose is even if its just a line or dot suggesting its placement and you're not supposed to overthink it too much- at the same time don't expect to see the realistic human face because the anime style is all about simplifying it

I tend to prefer anime with a bit more defined nose and lips and features though

I like them and realized they are perfect for monstergirls like in your pic and things like that. Western artists usually draw monstergirls really ugly in comparison, trying too hard to maintain a realistic female face but thats distorted and it looks ugly, whereas with anime style its pretty by design and easier to make attractive looking monstergirls, and other girls.

But the opposite is fine too and works better for certain shows too. And even then how much depth and definition and detail is visible on the face is often a function of how close up the view is especially in anime as opposed to art

Either way both styles are anime, and an example of how much variation you can have with the medium and what makes it so fun and flexible

The masking effect can also be potentially applied in human bodies as well (to an extent).
Having a simple face allows us to identify with the character, while the realistic (or semi-realistic) body allows us to admire it's sensual beauty and structure.
A face to feel empathy and a body to admire.
Of course, the body has to be at least believable in order to be admired.

This trick can also be used in hentai/porn to allow the viewers to feel the same pleasure the characters are feeling.

Again, anime and manga artists have been exploiting this trick for ages.

I'm guessing this is what OP's angry about?

The reverse can also be applied as well.
When you give a realistic face to a realistic body, like explained here: >>3468862 you can give that person a sense of "otherness", meaning that we no longer identify with them, we no longer are with them, and thus we are detached to them. Basically "dehumanizing them" in a way.

When you want your readers to know that a person is "on the other team" you can make that person a realistic face and body to detach the viewers from them.

This is mostly applied to antagonists, villains, monsters, etc, but can be applied to anybody according to the context of your work.

Most American comics often fall in this pitfall, sometimes denying the readers a sense of immersion.

Pretty much, he's complained about anime face with realistic body but really it shouldn't bother a person to that extent. Seems like its just nit-picking especially since you've shown in your previous posts why these things are drawn in such a way on both sides of the world.

But what you describe is simply part of the style, or do you prefer potato faces like some shows like Made in Abyss or Girls Last Tour did instead?

Only because you expect to see a hyper rendered face along with that body, but that is not what the anime style is about.

You know, I don't mind the anime style at all, some of my favorite artists are manga artists, and I understand what you all are saying about stylization and simplification (>>3468862 >>3468887 >>3470693 >>3470715 are great posts, thanks anons) but at the same time I just can't get behind the art in OP. Maybe I'm just an outlier, but I honestly prefer faces that have personality and individuality over perfect, glossy symbol faces that have maximized broad appeal and aesthetics to the point where you can't tell characters apart unless it's by hairstyle. It's just boring.
I know that I'm pretty trash, but picrelated is how I strive to do faces. I try to make characters as distinct as possible from facial features alone, and I try to make their bodies distinct as well, though I really need a lot more study and practice before that becomes a reality.
I think that there is something to be said for letting characters be 'ugly' or not perfectly aesthetically pleasing. Using All Might as an example, Kouhei Horikoshi got some pushback from editors about him because they thought that he wouldn't be appealing enough, but people loved All Might because he was both visually interesting and distinct, as well as being a likeable character. Horikoshi has a lot of individuality in his cast in general, very expressive too. Hiromu Arakawa is much the same way, especially her male characters.

I know that the OP picture is mediocre porn, but I feel it would be more appealing with facial features that aren't stickers or as one anon charmingly put it, "a flat dorito chip face".
