How do you draw mecha/robots/machines?

I've seen some books on drawing cars and planes and so on but there the drawings have countless guides that must take hours to draw and hard to keep track of.

Is that just for starting out? With enough practice will you be able to draw robots without having to use tons of guides? How long does that take?

If you like robots and mechanical things, you will spend a lot of time and care drawing them.

All the same, if you like butts and tiddies, you will spend time and care drawing those.

>How do you draw mecha/robots/machines?

It's funny ... for so many years, as a fan of Battletech, I became familiar with the 80's anime aesthetic common to the original Macross and Dougram shows - the source for almost every design in the original Battletech (formerly Battledroids) game. Drawing them over and over, like the grinding you hear so much clamouring about here, made it seem ... weird to draw giant combat mecha any other way to me.

But I can totally appreciate the more modern aesthetic - guys like Matt Plog, Anthony Scroggins, and Alex Iglesias.

>I've seen some books on drawing cars and planes and so on but there the drawings have countless guides that must take hours to draw and hard to keep track of.

Have you seen the ones for drawing giant robots? No? They're out there.

>Is that just for starting out? With enough practice will you be able to draw robots without having to use tons of guides? How long does that take?

I was able to do it without references after only a few years without even intentionally practicing - just doodling on my notes in class when I was bored. A person who was actually *trying* to get better at it could probably do it much faster than I did.

I really love this faux realism but of course I loved the atmosphere of MGS as well and I play a lot of tacticool sims so it's no surprise that this aesthetic appeals to me. It looks like the art from the front of a model airplane set, but the perspective is used to fuck with and exaggerate scale. and of course some phallic awareness is always nice.

>>3459519

the creature's design is nice. the split perspective (suggests the creature has only horizontal width and no height) sort of gives it a 2d pixel art vibe which doesn't appeal to me but fits with the design of the robot. I really like the style of rendering.

>>3459521

this is my favorite of these just because of the gesture (diver suit)

>this would be like an elemental / battle armor (I'm pirating this movie which I haven't seen)

There's a challenge in LAS/DAD to draw five mechs with five pilots. My original plan was to pair up famous animated characters with mechs (like Taarna and the Black Knight here) even if they didn't come from the same show/movie. Turns out the rules of the challenge call for us to come up with new mechs and new pilots, so my "homage" idea isn't going to work out.

I specifically quoted >>3459520 because it's a picture of a Black Knight and a Locust, just drawn with more of the modern aesthetic than the original.

>cool bit of history. it's interesting because the mechs in MW4 were nothing like anime in terms of mobility (more like literal walking turrets)

Every mech in the original Battledroids game came from Macross (Stinger, Wasp, Phoenix Hawk, Rifleman, Crusader, Archer, Warhammer, Marauder, and Longbow), Dougram (Scorpion, Shadow Hawk, Wolverine, Griffin, Thunderbolt, Goliath, and Battlemaster) or Crusher Joe (Locust). As the game evolved into Battletech, FASA borrowed a few more designs, like the fighters, dropship, and tank from Crusher Joe, and even introduced rules for mechs that could transform into jet fighters!

Legal action from Harmony Gold, producers of Robotech in America, caused (and is still causing) no end to the heartache for the Battletech folks, as they try to sue anyone they can bully to squeeze a few more dollars out of Robotech. This has also had the terribly unfortunate side effect of limiting the release of other Macross-related products here in the US, even though the franchise has been around for 30 years.

Various parties hold pieces of the Battletech license. Like Marvel comic book heroes, some pieces are more valuable in media other than the one in which they originated - in this case, video games more so than miniatures games. The two most promising solutions to the problem with with HG were to either strike the offending art from references and pretend nobody knows what those original mechs looked like (hence the term "Unseen"), even though the game has stats for them; or to redesign them in a way that keeps the game stats the same, but changes the appearance enough that they could argue in court that they're not infringing on anyone's IP.

It's the latter course that you're probably familiar with from the computer games. The new Battletech game by Hare Brained Schemes has a Battlemaster in it, but you'd be hard-pressed to say it looks much like the Dougram model it's based on.

Sorry about the image size on these. I think my favorite mechs and robots start out as interesting shapes, and get sort of filled in from there. The torso seems to be the showpiece on many, as it's shape is pretty arbitrary and it dictates the propoetions for the rest of the body. For the actual mechanical bits, it helps to try and pretend it's a real machine that actually has to move. Think about where the joints are, how they are actuated, where those actuators fit, etc.

1. Function before Form, where you make conscious design choices as they pertain to the functionality of the mech.
2. Form before Function, where you make design choices based on the overall shape language rather than perfect functionality.

None. I mean, sure, they can walk over rocky terrain, mountains and hills but when you have the sci-fi tech to make large walking tanks you may as well put antigrav or repulsors on them and just have your tanks fly as well. Mechs exist in fiction solely for the "rule of cool", which is the idea that if something looks awesome enough then it doesn't matter how ridiculous or impractical it is. This. There is absolutely no reason for mechs to exist no matter what the technology. Like the picture in the OP with metal gear. Imagine that tank opposite from it is like 30% bigger, it would fuck metal gear up and cost a fraction of the price. Hell, it'd probably fuck metal gear up as-is-or if it didn't one of it's two or three friends certainly would.

If anything military technology will get smaller and more efficient as technology improves, not more ridiculous. Mechs are fun but are actually fucking retarded. Apart from Metal Gear's function as a tactical nuclear launcher, there is nothing it can do that a helicopter couldn't.

Word of advice when drawing transformers, try to research the vehicle they transform into (if possible). That way you get a better idea of the proportions for their robot mode. For instance, primes legs here are far too thicc for the main part of the cab. and since his arms have to tuck backwards and his forearms move inwards to the spaces below the chrome bars across his chest, you need to think about how far that actually is.
