Took several years of a break, then began again with a serious mind around age 20-21.

I don't think that's true.
You don't see a lot of artists who start late beccause most people don't just suddenly dicover an interest like drawing when they are already an adult.

Well maybe it's not over, but it's going to be super hard

A lot of the improvement you would get "naturally" and effortlessly without even noticing by being a carefree child drawing will now come packaged with a lot of self-consciousness about how much you still have to learn and how embarassingly bad you stuff is.

It's the reason why you see so many threads here like "how do I enjoy drawing and studying when I know my stuff sucks?" etc

then you weren't "into" drawing nearly enough
you were supposed to be drawing but also actvely learning and trying to get better by reading tutorials and shit, posting awful fanart on DA / newgrounds / wherever, etc. I don't mean being a kid who randomly doodles on their notebooks, I mean asking for art supplies instead of toys. it had to be your main interest

if it was like this then you shouldn't be "learning from the beggining" as an adult at all, you already have a foundation

I... can't really remember a time when I didn't. I know when I was very young I didn't much like to draw and preferred sculpting in clay, but by the time I was 8 or 9 I was drawing regularly and I never stopped.

>> No.3460483

I never thought I would be trying to become a pro at drawing in my adult life. I had a 3rd grade art teacher and he made me cry for breaking his pencils (on purpose, but I said I didn't). Since Kindergarten or 1st Grade basically whenever I decided to pick up a pencil, and surprisingly it wasn't complete shit, (but it wasn't good) that's probably because my father side of the family drew a lot. I have a good sense of spacing, shapes, and directions of where the lines goes. But I didn't know any fundies, stroking techniques, nor why in general certain art looks better than others. Because you don't do deliberate practice. Practice entails doing things you suck at so you get better at them. You probably draw mostly the same shit, never branching out to something you're less comfortable. I bet you have one or two things you can draw decently but anything outside of that just crashes you because you never practiced the things that you couldn't do, just kept doing the things that you could do.

Depends on how you treat it. If you plan to hit it big with creative art, you're right. You're very unlikely to.

That being said, there are tons of art related jobs that are attainable if you work towards them. Concept art, linework assistants, calligraphy, tattoo work, etc.

I've worked as an assistant comicker, more recently a tattoo artist, commission work (inconsistent though) and logo designer. Decided art would be my job when I was 13 or so, and so far it has been.

The key is not focusing on artistic reasons to develop art. If you develop technique to the extent that it can have practical use in job fields, and are good at it, you can find jobs if you look for them.

Been drawing for most of my life, but desu it wasn't until the end of HighSchool that I actually started learning the right stuff and actually started getting better. Everything before that was mostly trash.
Of course, I screwed that up by being a lazy, wishy washy bastard, but hey. For all you late bloomers out there, you can learn how to do it too.

>> No.3474360

early as possible

the problem was that i got really frustrated with my own work iany time i drew something n highschool and never tried to improve myself/got lazy.

now that im starting again im mad that i didnt actually keep drawing in those years.

you get exposed to drawing from an early age, so if you like it youre generally going to find out at an early age unlike say hiking or playing a guitar

ofcourse it can always happen then you dont like it as a kid but learn to love it later, thats rare though

Okay well this is a critiquing board so I better actual critique.
First off, learn anatomy before you jump to painting. You're focusing a lot on polish but you need to learn how to actually draw/paint first. I mean by looking at these paintings you seriously need to dedicate a few months to just learning how to draw people, because as of now they don't look like people, they look like hideous goblins.
Look at this painting here >>3474263 it looks like her head has been put under a hydraulic press, it's squashed vertically, and also her ear is a couple of centimeters away from being on her neck.
The body just looks like fleshy mass with baby arms coming out.
All I can say is, just learn anatomy, I mean seriously it looks bad.
Now this one >>3475815 it's a bit better but still pretty bad. Her face is really crooked, her mouth and jaw aren't aligned with the rest f her face and now her ear's too high up.
As for her hand, just google "Scary Movie 2 Hanson".

You have to know where you're posting sweetheart, if you just want a friendly hugbox where everyone will say you're good then post your shit on facebook (I'm guessing you already have), but if you want constructive criticism and want to improve as an artist (which you desperately need to) then post on here.
I got laughed at for my first drawing I shared on 4chan too, but for the following 2 years I practised to make sure I wouldn't get laughed at again, and I haven't. My drawings are now met with praise and get reposted quite often, I mainly draw stuff on /v/.

>> No.3477159

>>3477131
And yes I know the standard for art isn't as high on /v/ as it is around here, but I also post on here occasionally.

oh man, i started as far back as i can remember. probably around age 4-5. my parents introduced me to comics like garfield and calvin and hobbes and even before i understood what the strips meant i wanted to create my own.

i'm 20 now and definitely not a comic writer anymore but i'm still absolutely infatuated with cartooning and animation.

I grew up in a religious family, and my parents would take me to church every Sunday. It would start with an hour long meeting, and in order to keep us occupied, my mom would always give me a pen and paper to entertain myself.

I've drawn for as long as I can remember, but I started to really take it seriously when I was about 14. I still remained in a cringey phase until recently, I feel, after having spent about a year consistently drawing almost every day for at least 30 minutes.

Now I pay attention in church, though.

I drew my first chicken scratch on paper and walls with crayon and color pencils when I was 3-5, can't recall anything when I was 6-7 though, while at 8, I drew my first lewd which I recall drawing them secretly after watching Snake Lady (Thai movie) and that Spider Lady/woman that rapes men (80s/90s movie). My drawings are mostly about ancient egyptian because I was so fond of it during that time, so it was pharaoh and the queen making out and I do include x-ray vision on where the penis went to. (no prior anatomy knowledge, but based on observation and innocent imagination). Skipping again, that time when I was 13, I doodling comic about my senior perfect body (because I saw him shirtless). A whole notebook dedicated to him lol. Learn programming when i was 14 and that become my newfound passion. It was flash/vb. I realised I'm bisexual when I was about 16, and when I found a classmate (a girl) that draws yaoi (and she told me about Aarinfantasy), quite good using pencil color medium. In my early 20s, I didn't draw as much as I wanted to, but more on the programming side. Some lewd flash games probably made by me somewhere around the internet, idk. A new project is planned.
