IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

For that it would be, for pixel art you want something like Aseprite (free if you compile it yourself but only around $15) or Graphicsgale which is freeware now. Both work very well there and for animation. Krita is also an option as I know some people do pixel work with it along with being good for animating while still free.

It's not. You need hard edges otherwise you end up with a blurry mess. You'll have to go back and use a hard brush anyway. Eventually you'll use a more opaque and harder brush to lay things in instead of blending so quickly.

As a beginner drawing, it's fine. You'll need more of the basics, like learning how to draw contour, capture a pose more accurately, draw proportions more accurately, anatomy more accurately, etc. It's a good starting point, better than many attempts posted here. Keep going. If you're working from reference, look at what's actually there, not what you think is there - which is called symbol drawing.

There's not really any useful feedback to give, unless we know your intent. Are you going to study painting seriously? If so, then start at the beginning like everyone else, and start learning the basics of form, color, and value, and go from there.
Work by absolute beginners is really hard to give a serious critique to, so just keep going. You're at 0 - come back at 1, and we'll take a look.

I think you're on the right track, just keep refining the form and start giving the object more texture and form. Art can be a process of focusing in - you start blocky and blurry, and keep refining it until it comes into focus. Start looking at how to render texture, and also color.
There's nothing here that is a red flag for going in the wrong direction - keep going! Take the next step of refinement. It's the same thing, digital or actual painting.

either the Watts drawing videos and Vilppu drawing manual has an episode about that. Might be drawing a figure from life from that angle. Actually Vilppu goes over the neck and jaw and chin anatomy, which is important. Sorry I can't remember better.

Some notes:

- might want to continue the sternocleidomastoid to the collar bones (actually draw these) rather than implying them as you do in the bottom left (and nowhere else)

- maybe use a model based more closely on the shape of the jaw bone

In addition to constructing your shape from different angles, incorporating the relevant anatomy will make it more convincing.

I'm gonna go on an autism spree and point out that SYMBOL DRAWING IS A REALLY VAGUE TERM AND IT'S BEING USED INCORRECTLY TO REFER TO A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS (coincidentally so is "autism" but that's a whole different argument)

when somebody screams "symbol drawing" in /beg/ they actually mean

>you are defining contours in 2D space which contradict the actual forms

you can define shit in 2D space all day and make it conducive to your drawing. one example of this is line weight. another is stylized drawings.

in a more esoteric sense, every time you draw from imagination you are in fact SYMBOL DRAWING because you are using a construction which is a simplification of the actual form so what's stored in your head is a SYMBOL

the issue is when you're a beginner you store buttfucking retarded symbols like this Eye of Providence shit, or the smiley face shit, or the stick figure shit, in the case of

>>3459938

referring specifically to the eye folds and nose and lip contours although he does pay attention to the light (evinced by the fact that the weird eyeliner shadows are not symmetrical) there shouldn't be contours in the shadowed half of the nose. in this sense the artist is drawing what his brain knows to be there (defining the side of the nose) which CONTRADICTS the truth of light hitting that part of the nose (the whole surface would be in shadow making the lines erroneous)

so in this instance the symbol drawing (of the nose) is "wrong" but that's because he didn't know any good symbols. the bony part near the eyes is all wrong.

I blame that fucking sticky for making it such a buzzword! the pictures are fine examples of what to avoid but saying "symbol drawing!111" is only sort of productive.

tl;dr you: read the sticky
tl;dr everyone else: if you're gonna do a low effort critique tell people to read the sticky instead of telling them to stop symbol drawing

hey friends
so I just took a reference, did some construction for it, copied most the linework but wasn't too worried about it looking exact as I was mostly worried about figuring out how to paint.
I'm only half way through the base layer of colour, but I'm using watercolour brushes so I'm thinking that I'm gonna blend what colour I've put down and then work on values (hence why my colouring looks real fucking lazy right now). Would this work? I'm doing this entirely to experiment and figure shit out, so I am next to entirely clueless, but my figuring was: base colour, blended - values on top, then blended again - then detailed colour on top of all of that. I sort've have it in my head where I want the detailed colour (for example darker yellow in the hair to try create the mass, I want the pants to be a yellow/orange, and then more detailed orange over top, etc), and a generalized idea of my lighting so I sort've know where I'm going with this... but I am still very new to colour. Its kind of obvious I tried to add value in with my base colours, which I wonder is a mistake or not. Also, I'm definitely getting around to fixing that hand and the legs lol.

Any help appreciated.

there's a lot of little things to say aside from "muh style". the right leg is incredibly short and doesn't look like you've done any foreshortening, the left leg is also weirdly proportion. the blue/green cast of lighting isn't appealing with the rest of the colors you've got and it's applied inconsistently across the figure. the left arm/shoulder comes out of nowhere and the left hand anatomy isn't good, just looks like a fat blob. making her more reclined would look more dynamic, also holding your arm at that angle while being sat that upright is incredibly uncomfortable. it looks like she has some kind of white 5 o'clock shadow with the highlights you've given her, the stroke on the nose is very thick and i don't care for it especially with how high it goes up the brow. around her hairline should be a softer blend between skin and hair instead of a block of hair. i don't like how her eyebrows are halfway up her forehead.

You should flat with opaque colors or do an underpainting first that accentuates the values. You're not really going to get anything but mud if you try to put values in with the watercolor brush. You need to study color too because you're not really painting with a unified palette. I can't think of another way to describe it than "symbol coloring" but you're painting with colors you think things should be but not taking into account perception of the color or lighting. Not sure what the reference is. I would recommend working in greyscale or thumbing out some value studies before you choose the values you want to place on the character.

Read Hampton's figure book to see which volumes to emphasize if you want to take shortcuts. The lats are one of the biggest muscles in your body but it's an incredibly thin sheet that you can see the forms of others underneath. The iliocostalis is another muscle you want to pack with the spinal erectors which go under the tail of the trapezius. You also get the lats going over the serratus as well.

stop using digital, you need to work with paper first.
Learn the properties and techniques you can utilise with graphite, then move to a more complex tool.

When drawing lines on paper have your pencil basically horizontal, only like 15 degrees angled. The lines you create will be broader and less defined. This is good because it won't take much to erase them when you need to.

Draw a face every day for 365 days. Of course have a week break here or there but no more than 3 in the total year. Sometimes its good to not draw for a couple days, especially after absorbing a lot of info and practicing it.

I like this, good balance between brush stokes and blend. Make sure your initial sketch is accurate. The bottom line of her right eye is the same height as the middle of her left eye (almost). Also your pupil/ cornea/coloured section/ whatever are facing different directions.
-Did you have difficulty with the right eye? Use any selection tools? Looks way more rendered than the other eye (in a more angular way).
- Maybe define nostril in the light slightly more (remember you can alter the value of one section by darkening or lightening the section next to it).

Krita and Gimp are both free open source software, but they're both different things. Krita is made for art, for which it is among the best tools available today comparable to and even exceeding commercial software in many ways. I'm not sure what to ask, but i decided to pick up painting for the first time since kinder last week and this is what I made...

You will never need to draw hands without reference because you have two perfectly good models attached to your arms. Point your right hand at yourself and boom, why are you doing that from imagination? The hard part is being able to draw a decent hand in an ultra stylized thumbnail sketch of a person. Even with a reference, that's tough because you have to be really good at proportions and line accuracy.

The reading itself is only 24 pages, not 214. You can also find enlarged versions of the plates here for easy printing. Only print out one plate at a time to save on ink, since it will take you a while to get through a single plate. As for charcoal, I was recommended those pencils with a string you can pull down, but if you're good at sharpening I guess you can do it as recommended in the Da Vinci initiative videos.

What are you drawing with? If you're using graphite and shitty paper there is a limit to how artistic your work is going to look. Something like that is making use of a lot of layers and erasing, you're not going to learn that unless you work specifically on rendering with pencils. Play around with your tool, maybe work on a hatching method you like or lightly laying in tone until you get the buildup of value you want. Use the side of the pencil and just make downstrokes lifting your pencil up and bringing it back to the top. Work on making some value charts, I find with graphite I really only get 3-4 tones without killing the paper or just getting too messy. That's where things like hatching or line weight come in for accomplishing the same goal. Dodson also uses some ink washes for shading too which you'd need to specifically find a way to make on your own. The book is more important for introducing you to drawing. You can skip ahead to the mapping shadows bit and then go back, you don't have to do the book in order but don't expect to understand later things building upon previous lessons.

CSP is all about playing with brush presets. I'd recommend against brush packs really for now. For sketching I like the design pencil and some tweaks I've made to other brushes. Inking would be minor edits to existing pens. You can also download from clip-assets where people upload their presets.

CSP doesn't come with a great hard or soft round so you'll have to make your own. I recommend sticking with those two for getting to learn painting since they're the basis for everything and what you'll see in tutorials like ctrl paint. Follow this tutorial to make them, you don't have to worry about the mixing settings as much since you'll find your own you care for. One thing I highly recommend is setting a key to turn on or off paint mixing: Shortcut Settings > Setting Area: Option > Tool Property Palette > Ink > On/Off Mixed Ground Color. By default I think almost every brush starts with mixing mode being on so you'll be picking up the color of whatever surface you're painting on and likely not getting the colors you want. I leave this setting turned off most of the time until rendering.

First time doing a watercolor.
I noticed somehow my painting looks like it has this thick crayon like color layers, Instead of a light layered color thingy. Should i use more water or something? Sorry if it doesn't make any sense, i don't really know how to describe my problem in english.

I had the opposite problem when I started. Looks like you went full pigment and not much water. It should dry a bit lighter than what it first appears.

Around 3:45 is where he's about to get into the painting.

post noses. there are 3 main cartilage sections of the nose, some fat for the wings, and then the skull's influence on the bridge.

Whoa i was definitely far off with my paint to water ratio. That amount of water looks hard to control tho, might need a while to get used to that. Thanks for the vid man

oh wow, a dot brush that you go over several times with until it's a mess of filled pixels. i'm sure you'll learn a lot by avoiding committing to anything

It's fortunate you don't use an scanner because it would have been a waste, the perspective is a mess, nothing fits with nothing and the anatomy is very poor as well, her ass seems to be in a completely different perspective compared to the torso and both to the head, study perspective.

For the life of me I just cannot perceive size, starting to feel like I have brain damage.

I'll block it all out and try to match part horizontally and vertically but then the lip is reaching the chip and the far eye is tiny.

Take a break. Then get back at it because everything is wrong. Then remind myself I need a ton of patience because it takes more than a life time to master it.
