Anyone else here is/was an engineering student trying to also become a good artist?

I feel like its such a contrast of skills and thinking. I know its possible because there are quite a few people who do both quite competently.
I want to study and grind so I can draw stuff that isn't garbo, but at the same time I know I can't neglect my assignments for uni for even a day. Anyone know this struggle

I got an EECS degree, and work in tech. I focused on eng first, and now I do drawing as a hobby.

My sister got an art degree, and now wants to back to school for eng - it’s much harder / impossible to go this route

Yeah, you just have to make the most of any free time you have left if any

yes i know this feel. currently studying physics, and it's an eternal battle between putting time into studies and trying to squeeze what i can get to draw

I dropped out of engineering, does that count?

yeah. I dropped out of art school, went to major in engineering, joined the military, stuck in military and hating my fucking life, will want to go back to school for engineering once this shitstorm is over.

Engineering and being an artist are not opposites, at all. They both require an insane amount of critical thinking and problem solving. Learning fundamentals of art is just as hard, in my experience.

Your issue with balancing assignments with grinding your art skills isn't specific to being an engineer(ing student). It's a time management issue. Even if you were working on an oil rig for 8 hours a day plus overtime, you'll STILL wonder how you will set aside time to draw. Be good to yourself and take it a bit at a time as it goes. Focus on school, you can get better at art later once you make/save enough money.

I seriously hope you don't do this if you have low-self esteem

pre-graduate school is easy, its like a retarded adult daycare. Just be honest with yourself are you struggling because you ACTUALLY spend 50 hours a week doing work and studying for classes, if so then don't bother trying to learn two things at once. Just draw for fun and "study" between semesters.

I switched from compsci to art because I just didn't enjoy it as much, it takes a bit of an obsessive love for it. I'm not very good but I'm also unironically suicidal and I decided I will starve to death and be homeless before I give up making it.

similar situation. Dropped out of college because i wasnt smart/dedicated enough for computer science. Ive been doing factory work since, it leaves me with a surprising amount of free time for art when im not too tired

If you find the right teachers it's not. Try to find resources that teach a process which you can relate to. Well taught art information isn't that different from the scientific side. Your knowledge of physics should help when it comes to how light behaves and material rendering. Construction works wonders. Behind any strong stylized piece of art lies a good knowledge of fundamentals that they are trying to conceal. Average artists are the worst at telling you how the world works because they don't inherently understand what they're doing. There are some things you can't teach but by the time you get to that point with your skills you should be able to better understand the emotional side.

Vicente Segrelles was an engineering student turned artist. He used his knowledge of engineering in his fantasy designs of ships, armour and weaponry. He was also a history buff.

Huh... are you Bizarro me? I switched from art to computer science (turns out I'm better at computers than drawing) so I could get a real job.
