agemo, i like your colors and the abstractness is cool. the light, loose feeling gives a relaxing atmosphere.

I was pretty happy with today's failed experiment, because it pointed to a clear problem with how I was mixing my paint, and I'm going to try some different approaches tomorrow. I figure the first 10 or so days will be hard for all of us, especially those who are not used to traditional (yet alone traditional mediums outside). It's not supposed to rain until the weekend, but hopefully I can rough it out like those of you who've dealt with it already.

I have a minor site update request. I'd like to participate in the community but not on a streak basis, can we get a none option added to the Submit: Post Frequency dropdown menu? That is, our total # of submissions could still count towards badges in the normal way, without our being forced to submit every piece to a specific frequency? I feel the more freedom I have in which to structure my own scheduling naturally, the smarter I'm working, and the more relaxed I feel about producing bad things outside my comfort zone because I'd have room to play with things I wouldn't be forced to submit, so could feel more comfortable with being bad. Having no other option but to participate in a frequency seems to be artificially sticking me to my comfort zone.

I currently get commissions for environment concepts and background art, and will continue to get them because my folio has environment concepts and background art. I likely *won't* get commissions doing character, creature design, illustration because my folio has no examples of them.

Yeah I've been wasting time on the new HBS Battletech game, too. If I miss the deadline for the mecha challenge, it will be entirely due to this game's interaction and my weak will-power.

Nothing in the challenge implies you have to be good to join it. You just have to put in your best effort and create finished concept pieces, rather than just posting 30 minute sketches.
There's nothing really preventing jerry from doing it, people of pretty much all skill levels can create finished pieces, it just might take more effort (redrawing things a lot, using tons of references) and look worse. However, jerry has time and time again shown he has no interest in putting effort into his drawings. so even if he does submit something, he'll probably be eliminated based on lack of effort.

The challenge being 2 months long was a mistake that lead to procrastination. Some of those who procrastinated long enough have left the site. Most people submit sketches to DAD, rarely do you see wip lasting longer than a day or two. It was naive to think people would take the 2 months out of their time to work their hardest on mechas.

I joined the challenge not because I planned on its taking me out of my comfort zone (which it did - I have never worked so much with ink and markers), but rather would inspire me to draw mechs and pilots instead of rationalizing my laziness and lack of progress.

It's been good: in addition to my drawing several new mechs, I re-drew a couple of older designs, and of course spent a lot more time on pilots than I ever did before; plus, the kids have occasionally joined me for "drawing time" when we take over the kitchen table with our paper and drawing implements. It's nice to get them (and myself) away from mindless electronic entertainment.

"Inability to manage time" implies that a mistake was made, yet it's just about a challenge on DAD. Both the reward and the punishment are so low that there's really nothing pushing you towards using the time properly. Procrastinating until the final week of the challenge does not put you at a significant disadvantage in any way.
Rather than pushing blame around, we can just take this to learn for the future and require at least weekly progress reports for long term design challenges.
