The last thread got archived immediately after I replied to anon >>3453036

so here's my answer:

Thanks! I'm also
>>3432138 >>3433040 and >>3434626
(and now OP too I guess)

I generally use a ballpoint pen, sharpie fine point, colored mech pencil, or pentel flair (M) pen when I draw - the thin lines really help you keep track of your forms, but you can get repetitive stress injury real fast if you're using your wrist instead of your arm+shoulder... especially if you're trying to hatch everything or make tiny, scratchy strokes.

No matter what or how you want to draw, you'll need:
a firm understanding of perspective and a solid grasp of line weight hierarchy - it's useful even when painting without lines.

To be clear: boxes aren't a meme and neither is loomis. Anyone who says/thinks you don't need to understand perspective to draw well is full of shit. Don't give them your time and definitely don't give them your money.

(case in point: went to RIT for illustration; their Industrial Design program is supposedly one of the nation's top. I took an ID class for freshmen during my last semester and learned more from that one class than I did from 4 years of my actual major. The illustration "program" had no artistic standards and barely any curriculum. Kids were graduating despite not being able to place 2 cubes in a consistent environment or draw a stylized hand.

Don't go to RIT for Illustration. It's a mess. ID seems to be fine tho)

pic related: it's some of the exercises the ID students are required to do to increase dexterity, shape understanding/fluency, speed, and perspective fluency. They are done on regular copy paper and in pen (ballpoint preferably but felt tips are ok as long as they're fine point).

you draw freehand straight lines as straight and evenly spaced as you can get them - shooting for 1/8 inch spacing.

2/2 on the opposite side of the paper, you'll draw one of the following:

- 20+ freehand perfect squares
- 20+ freehand circles, built using squares
- 15+ cubes, aligned to consistent vanishing points/horizon
- 20+ freehand ellipses
- 15+ cubes with circles on their faces
- cubes attached with cylinders
- cubes divided into more cubes
- cubes attached to each other
- boxes (cubical or non) with an open "flap"

generally we would do 10 or more of one category per week, (trying to do at least 2 a day) and then move on to the next, more complicated category. These exercises are great if your lines are shaky or if you're very slow. just make sure to ALWAYS DRAW WITH YOUR ARM AND SHOULDER. your wrist can't handle large curves, straight lines, or all that stress. your arm and shoulder can.

These exercises are meant to be done at a comfortabe speed in which you can fully control your arm. Not faster than you can manage, but fast enough so that each page takes around 5 -10 minutes to complete after you've done a few.
Part of the goal of these is for your shape construction to become so familiar that it feels as natural as writing.

Keep in mind that these exercises are NOT a goal in and of themselves, but are a means of reaching it effectively. Do them with discipline and reap the rewards, or don't and enjoy your place at the bottom of the bucket.

my feelings about creating content and artsyles are as follows: brevity is the soul of wit, and great designs are a mixture of simple and complex shapes.

simple =/= bad
complex =/= good

Each have their own uses, pros, and cons. There's no point in complexity for complexity's sake unless you're the character designer for the next final fantasy game.

When learning, becoming quick and consistent at constructing+creating simple shapes will allow you to handle more complexity and nuance without massive slowdown or inconsistency.

I love this so much, the three different strokes and details. I love the little bit of text in the top right. I’m jealous and inspired. Thank you! And when you say you "just started", what do you mean? Are you in high school/college or are you "on your own"? How much prior experience have you had? You seem to be at very high level for someone "new" to art. Your linework, texture, and form are very tight!

>>3455145
Very difficult, but getting easier. Here's a few words of advice: your portfolio is as much for you as it is your clients. To put it in food terms, it's basically a "menu" with pictures for clients to order from. They'll want to know what to expect for their money. In order to sell your art/services, you you have to perform them consistently AND in a timely manner. And I do mean "perform". Art tests are common for nearly all jobs that pay decent money or higher so high skills don't mean that much if you take half a year to finish a single piece.

Drawing skills and draftsmanship are highly valuable skills and will serve you well. They are NOT the only thing you need, but are very useful in nearly every artistic career. The higher the strength of your fundamentals, the more versatile you can become (switching from storyboard artist to character designer isn't easy, but if there's no storyboard jobs available and studios need designers, you might not have a choice)

Studios (especially Nickelodeon) look at social media (Instagram/tumblr, etc.) And being popular/marketable is a desired skill.

[COUGHS LOUDLY] https://www.instagram.com/matt_gaglione_art / https://mansizedmeatballs.tumblr.com
Sorry, I've been sick.

If a product can't afford its own existence, it won't last - no matter how much people like it. Movies and tv are no different. These jobs are usually temporary, since it technically ends when the show or movie's production does. You have to have the artistic AND social skills required for others to want you on their team. Every production is just one big "group project". If anyone's slacking or being a jerk, they probably won't be sought after.

kind of both, actually. The overall goal of these is to get to a point where you've become so used to working with vanishing points that you get a "sense" for VP's once you place them and don't need to constantly stop every 3 seconds to reorient yourself.

when practicing these, I nearly always use a straightedge to define the horizon, and I always recommend new learners to place their Vanishing Points ON the page (usually at either end) - it really makes a difference and your brain NEEDS to be seeing+getting used to straight horizon lines and at least some straight perspective guidelines before you place all those squares and turn them into cubes. You may use a ruler for some of the perspective guidelines, but try NOT to use it when making the cubes. You need to train your dexterity with the goal of making a ruler "optional"

This exercise should be done so that you're making lines at a comfortable speed. Also, DON'T draw over your own lines to try and "fix" them. once they're down, that's it. If your first cubes are wonky (which is inevitable for anyone when they start) just take note of why and make more. DON'T spend all day on one cube. This is meant to increase your production speed!

When we use perspective (which should be 100% of the time when we plan on showing showing 3 dimensions of space, NOT just when drawing architecture or machines) the first forms/lines you draw must be measured more carefully than the rest - because if they are drawn "correctly" in terms of persepctive, you can use THEM as reference when drawing more. If they DON'T follow your established space (horizon/vanishing points) and they SHOULD, they'll confuse you and trip you up as you continue.

2/2 This is why KJG draws those boxes in his demos. He uses those quick forms to judge the volume, scale, and orientation of whatever he's about to draw. When he was learning, he was doing that visual math on the page. Now that he's so experienced, he does it in his head. It looks like he just "gets it", but that's only because he's so fluent that he can figure these relationships out in his head before he actually draws them.

It's a lot like how we can think of entire words, phrases, and sentences before we write/speak them. We're fluent in English, but as artists, we must be fluent in the language of art. The rules of reality are akin to grammatical rules and sentence structure. Writers (and speakers) break these on occasion, but the most skilled of them fully understand
1) What the rules are, 2) How they work, and 3) WHY they have to break them.
When high level artists break rules (or make their own to facilitate a style), they can do it far better (and usually easier) they are 100% aware of what they are doing, what will happen because of it, and why.

Our reasons for breaking the rules of reality must be the same way in order for us to make the best decisions when we create. It's a gradual process - we learn by doing as we go - but it's something we have to work towards and keep in mind.

No problem! And good luck. Remember to do drawings for YOU every so often - and always use the skills you're practicing while you do them!

Here's a few of my weapons of choice.

These pens/pencils work great with each other for designing and sketching. Would highly recommend.

The Mechanical pencils are 0.7mm Pentel Twist Erase XP. They can use the whole stick of lead, unlike most mech pencils. The eraser can be extended/retracted as well. They usually DON'T come with colored lead, but you can find that on Amazon. The kind in the picture is pentel (which I like) but there are Japanese brands on Amazon that might be cheaper. I tried some of the uni-ball 0.7 mm "blue" lead, which was very cheap and it's great. It is noticeably softer than pentel's lead and as a result it erases + smears more easily - but overall it's still less "smear-able" than regular graphite. The tone is extremely similar to blue ballpoint ink.

The PaperMate Flair pens won't bleed through to the other side of your paper (unlike Prismacolor markers) unless it's SUPER thin and have a variable line weight depending on your pressure. Extremely efficient and convenient.

Bic round stic pens are cheap as shit and reliable, unlike PaperMate's garbage ballpoints. Drawings made with the blue round stics (or really any ballpoint) look infinitely better than the black IMO, especially under decent lighting.

Putting up some tutorials in the current thread in case anyone's interested >>3464310

These are things you'll want to memorize and integrate into your drawings/sketches ASAP. They'll feel awkward at first but after a month or so you should start seeing noticeable improvement if you're drawing regularly. You may even see upgrades immediately - it varies by the person.

I recommend printing these (or any other notes/reference you find yourself coming back to) out and taping them INTO your sketchbook for quick and easy access. You'll absorb+memorize the info faster than if you only ever look at it on your phone.

Do you do tutoring by any chance? I feel like I could learn a thing or two from you. I know those images you'd made are similar to stuff that I'd read from Loomis etc. which I'm already familiar with, but given our similar tastes I wouldn't mind picking your brain a bit or having the opportunity to watch you work.

Not sure where else to post this so here goes. What exactly should I put in my portfolio sketchbook? I hate these vague art school videos someone pls give me a general rundown or list.
I'm working in a 14x16 tanned sketchbook btw.

>> No.3489923

>>3489899

Most, if not all, want to see strong fundamentals in various mediums and subjects. Draw anything and everything, with whatever mediums your sketchbook can handle. If the sketchbook you bought is the one I'm thinking of, it can probably handle most drawing mediums, light watercolor washes, and maybe some gouache. Make sure to show your skills in both b&w and color, showing that you understand light values and good color coordination.

I won't say what criteria art schools have on stylized artwork in portfolio work, but I would only reccomend including it if you already have a firm grasp of fundamentals and the school isn't a traditional school, further reading here: https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/515535-traditional-vs-conceptual-art-schools.html

Most improtantly, its a good opportunity to challenge yourself and learn to be confident trying new things. Work hard right up until the deadline and don't procrastinate!

Good luck!!
