'The industry' is a catch-all term for what /ic/ thinks the world of professional art revolves around. It includes:

>fantasy & sci-fi illustration
>concept art
>tumblr character commissions (often with those fast-food style commission charts)
>porn patreons
>furry commissions

To much of /ic/, these are the only way to make a living with any form of art. Even when just focusing on 2D art, there isn't just one 'industry'. There are many - but because they don't focus on digital paintings of dragons or space marines, people here dismiss them as being not legitimate opportunities for professional 2D artists. For example, there's never really a whole lot of talk on /ic/ about being a general 'freelance illustrator', which is ironic since it's such a drawing-focused community. A versatile freelance illustrator can dip their toes into commissioned jobs relating to editorial, gig posters, murals, branding, portraits, apparel, comics, books, advertising, etc. and do great. Even when taken individually, there are whole, massive industries that revolve around each of these types of jobs.

It's one thing to not know about opportunities outside of what you know due to inexperience, but it's another to believe that these are the only real career opportunities for ALL professional artists.

I'm the anon you're talking about. The whole point of my rants is not that you should like what I like, but rather it's wrong to think the world of professional art revolves solely around fantasy / sci-fi / concept art. I've made that extremely clear. Yet people still seem to disagree with that and get extremely defensive for some reason. They are dismissive of virtually any other form of professional art - even in the broad industry of illustration.

Again - this is what people on /ic/ think:
If you're doing any form of professional art that's NOT fantasy / sci-fi / concept art, then it's "MOMA garbage" and incapable of supporting someone financially.

Does this sound reasonable to you?

You know this isn't true. You really think /ic/ is a bastion of diverse, open thinking and different types of work?

No. Unless it's digital paintings of fantasy / sci-fi subjects, anime, or porn, then /ic/ wants nothing to do with it. It's hard to argue otherwise.

This is a pathetic and defensive response, and it's really the only thing I hear whenever I call out /ic/ on having a delusional and flawed tunnel vision on what it means to be a professional artist. I've never said that I didn't enjoy fantasy or sci-fi art, but you're responding as if I did. It's a weak sham of an argument set up so you can have something to easily refute.

>but it's another to believe that these are the only real career opportunities for ALL professional artists.

Exactly! Cities like London and New York are a thriving hub of opportunity for illustrators. Just a get a job flexible enough to pay the bills (or find a way to game the system) and spend ALL of your free time drawing, so as to get better consistently. Farm the fundamentals and attend life drawing classes whenever you can, maybe once a week. And don't fret about 'art style' (I hate that term because it implies that a person's unique way of drawing can be aped by others), you'll develop your own look.

But you forget to mention the most important thing of all: NETWORKING! When I used to freelance, I went to parties, exhibitions and comic festivals, the amount of creative people from different fields congregate there. Talk to them, exchange details. /ic/ seems to forget the value of knowing somebody - after all, most of your favourite artists ended up where they are because of connections.
