Me and my woman make totally different styles of art. No way to know whose better. I freehand, she traces. I do abstract and she does representational (the real reason you think she is better). QUESTION, this is from an artist that i'm trying to study. when i up the saturation on her work to better see the wide variety of color, i can see that this was rendered with what looks to be endless tiny strokes or 'dotting'/dabbing the brush, rather than gliding the brush and covering large areas like most people do. Is this correct?

>> No.3444594

>>3444576
in phtoshp yu can customize your brush to color dynamics.

so when you do a stroke it changes saturation or hue...mix it up with overlay and that would be it.

I don't know where to go from here...

I tried some loomis stuff and I'm not sure if I'm good enough to progress to the part about expressions or not, but I'm bored of just drawing cartoon faces. There's something unsatisfying and frustrating about it.

After that, I enter a period where I'm not drawing as much as I think I should and/or not actually trying when I do draw.

So some time passes and I think okay, maybe I should go look at some other drawing tutorials since Loomis is annoying me for whatever reason.

I find a tutorial online some where which recommends practising the basics for a time before actually bothering with drawing stuff, which I do and think that I'm not as technically good as I used to be (which probably wasn't that good to begin with), so I go back to the /ic/ sticky...

I try drawing the Stravinsky, and realize that either my technical ability is not as bad as I thought it was or I spent more time on this than I should've. But I still make mistakes. I also give up on the head and face because aside from me getting the lines wrong, by that time, I was bored of the exercise and was more interested in seeing how the proportions worked as a whole. My proportions are off? and they seemed to be off when I was doing the skill exercises too, but the result isn't nearly as off as I... I don't...

This is process is frustrating me and I'm not even completely sure why. I feel like someone tossed a hot pizza at my face while playing the Head-On ad.

tl;dr: I feel frustrated, overwhelmed, and oddly enraged. Tell me if this is a good result or not so I can move on.

Or just... I don't know just tell me something because I've been trying to learn to draw on my own all this time and its too hard to do it that way for me because I just overanalyse every fucking thing.

Reading through the Johannes Itten book and doing the exercises along the way. All non black-and-white blocks are from the section about the hue contrast. Black-and-white blocks are a beginning of the brightness contrast chapter. I do not really FEEL that I took much out of these exercises. You post a lot of trash, but id give this a 6/10. Apply yourself. You know how to use color and light, but we need to see how you work with space. It's time to put those same tired brush strokes aside and put that oil paint to better effectiveness. It's great that you probably produce more than anyone else here and you are trying new things and experimenting, but your work is getting stale. Do some landscape studies or something that isn't broad strokes portraiture. Like I said, you probably do more than 90 percent of the folks here, some would shitpost you at any opportunity, but I want to see you improve.

Also, the 777 thing is kitsch. Anyone who wasn't raised on a diet of paint chips can do better than that. I know you can.

Or is it all about maximalistic tightly rendered girls so real you reach out and touch them? Like kr0nprinz and loish. I hate literally everything about this design wise, but to say it's not executed well would be a lie. Great consistent brush work, but anatomically it's borderline offensive how you've 'made light' of the person's obesity. A person that 'thicc' in real life would have a much less flattering upper body, but i think we both know that. And don't get me started on your tumblr nose.

Stop doing tumblr shit. Put in the work, draw and learn something. You're wasting time posting kitschy garbage when you could actually be making something worthwhile and making something of yourself. The brushwork is nice, but it's becoming a crutch. Computer generated texture is only going to get you so far and it's not going to cover up your weak areas. Stop posting for praise and do something worthwhile. Everyone knows that tumblr "just add red to every facial feature and make everything cute because drawing is hard" "technique". Make something original and contribute to society and stop letting people enable you.

Maybe it's what they're wearing, or because they got a long neck, or have a weird shaped head, anything. Also, if you're lookin to make people laugh, you should have a pretty good chance usin mugshots for your caricaturing and design needs. Hell I did one of a guy with a long neck and it ended up turnin into a vampire design that I was satisfied with. See, even made his eyebrows shaped like bat wings. better, but still a bit off, are you using any tool to check the thirds or are you doing it by eye? usually the crop tool shows it

first one on the pic is your composition, the third doesnt line up with the main focus of the dragon, the head area
the rest are some examples, but you should also move the herd (? whatever that dude is looking at) to the other third

Thank you! The canvas proportion is not an issue, it can be whatever. I was using the crop tool and seeing the lines, but I guess I was being a retard. I used to rely too much on lining up the exact spots but now I somehow made a 180 and almost ignore them, which was even worse.
It's a herd, now that the proportions have changed I'll take your advice and move it. I don't know if you're the same anon that's been replying but either way thanks a lot for the feedback. You're taking breaks, right? otherwise you're a fucking madman. If you're already taking a significant amount of breaks, try stretching your hands when you do so. Look for "carpal tunnel excercise" on youtube, there's one single excercise I do where you just bend your hand almost 89 degrees (like saying "stop") and with the other hand pull back your fingers, see if you find it. It's literally the only stretching excercise I've done all these years for drawing and my wrist never hurts, I don't know if it's helped or it's just me.
But yeah, take breaks dude senpai. And make sure you're drawing in a comfortable position, and if you're forcing your wrist movements then maybe start using your elbow for some of them, move your arm around the canvas instead of trying to make your hand do everything.

Take breaks every 30 min and stretch. Pic related gave me severe carpal tunnel, I almost had to get surgery. Took 4 months of physical therapy and not using my right hand to not be in pain all the time. had to learn to write with my left. Now it acts up from every little thing. It got sore while I painted earlier. Sore at work. Sore from typing this, I shit you not. I have to stop and stretch every 5 to 10 minutes of using my hands.

Do. Not. Fuck. With. RSIs.

I went on a 19 hour adderall fueled drawing spree on pic related, on top of many similar days of drawing. The black ink went down first and then I used colored pencil in all the little centimeter-sized 'windows'. Lots of pressure to make sure it was all burnished.

And now I have a lifelong chronic pain for a handful of polished turds.

Do. Not. Fuck. With. RSIs.

What exactly is more 'worthwhile' work?

I got into illustration with the conceptart.org crowd and doing photostudies and studying Bammes and Hampton and memorizing every muscle, but at some point realized theres a whole world of illustration outside of the MtG and pixar thing- and that not every piece needs coreshadows and rimlighting.

Since then I've just been deconstructing my work and having a lot of fun with shape and design. I got A's and B's in my figure painting classes, so I *can* paint a reclined nude in oils on canvas or take reference photos to do something Rockwellian off of- but just found myself heading off in the opposite direction.

Are you implying """"technique""""" is more important than appeal? It's not. Maybe in the scifi/fantasy genre or russian academic drawings, where they are intertwined, but not otherwise. Look up Rebecca Green, thassenkam, Uwe Heidschotter, Mikkel Sommer, Bendik Kaltenborn, John Cuneo. Broaden your mind.

Anon don't pay attention to the other dumbass, your work looks fine. You gotta learn to recognize good, worthwile advice from shitty critique coming from a place of hatred, especially on /ic/. Hell, even if your work looked like dogshit you would still have to ignore a critique like that, spouting buzzwords is not useful critique. I despise the "haters gonna hate" attitude because I recognize even a very mean critique has its points and they can get overshadowed by looking like blind hate, but in this case it's definitely pure baseless blindness and you do have to ignore it.

No, no, no. People like firez, brian, illustrat, and cumbum are being bad on purpose because they outwardly reject learning fundamentals claiming it would ruin the purity of their self expression. The fact that anon *can* execute the fundamentals makes all the difference. One by making that anon's work actually appealing and not weirdly wonky looking unlike theirs and secondly giving solid basis to anon's stylistic decisions; those who cling to one style without having tried realism or other styles are usually stuck with some not-fully-realized, incohesive and unappealing "style" while those who are well rounded know much better what to keep and toss to get a unique and appealing look.

>> No.3452853

A small edit that would help is having the tires hanging way lower with some of the axel and suspension showing. It will give the truck a little gesture to help show it's lifting. The weight being off the wheels would make them hang anyway and that will help show it too. Most of the kids' poses help show it too but the ones in the truck bed should be gripping the sides and looking surprised or at least reacting too, especially since they're so close to the one who's causing it. She and the tires lifting from the ground are focal points, use those kids to guide the viewers eye to them.

Shows what I know. Least I have a base to work with now. Still, I imagine these muscle groups in the back would stretch as the arms move around. But how much? What happens to the back when the back is stretched from bein rounded? What muscles, if any, get squeezed when the shoulder blades pinch together? What happens to the lats when someone bends side to side? The shoulder blades can protrude from the back, but is that because of certain motions or because in weaker people, the muscle groups around it are underdeveloped? Not the weeb poster but I strongly disagree here. The face was half drawn and mirrored, that's not the mark of someone who has their fundamentals down. Even with that cheat it still has a lot of problems. The nose is too close to the mouth and looks completely flat on her face. The face as a whole lacks dimension, the features don't look like they're set in a skull together due to the lack of definition of the eye sockets, cheekbones, and eyebrow ridge - obviously the cheekbones and sockets are undefined because nothing was drawn to indicate them, the problem with the eyebrows is they follow a straight line instead of curving with the ridge, missing a chance to create form. The cranium is too small and the face takes up slightly too much room on the head. It certainly isn't the worst start on a portrait I've seen but I think it's irresponsible to say it looks great. This person can still learn more.
