IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Feet, by the looks of it ;D.

I actually quite like your face, and everything above the hips seems fine, but your legs could use some work. More detail, better posing. Try a more dynamic pose- not from the side or the front, but something diagonal.

>>3442293
Looking at that thing I hardly want you to get better it's creepy as fuck. Just keep practicing and make...creepy...meat things. For that kind of stuff you can only get better if you keep trying over and over.

Cute, but I think you should try to make longer, smoother lines, instead of short strokes. The wing of the bird should also be closer to the body, it looks like it's lifted up in the picture. And the beak should be reworked a bit, make it a little longer and it should be more apparent that it hinges at the middle, it looks like the birb is wearing a balaclava. See pic related on how a beak is normally attached (presumably in easier to distinguish colors than your reference had)

Thank you for the advice, I will try it on my next bird. I do normally draw long lines(you can see on the tail) but the bird was a bit fluffy looking so I went back over it to add what detail my brainlet could handle.

In that case you should look a bit more at the way that the feathers are structured. You can see that they are mostly following a streamlined profile, flowing from the head to the tail and along the lines of the bird. The back of the bird for example is very smooth so your drawing should be longer, elegant lines. The abdominal region is a bit more fuzzy, but still very streamlined. The beak should be a hard line, not as fuzzy as your drawing.
A note on the wings: When adding detail to them, try to complete the feathers, don't just draw a lot of lines that just kinda end. Again, they are very aerodynamic, so smooth lines are the best here. Look at wing anatomy, which can give you a good idea on how these feathers are drawn and how they look like when tucked away.

It's good to test your retention. I'd reccomed trying to construct a refrence using the lessons in Fun with a Pencil. from there find inconsistencies. At some point reread fun with a pencil and see what you forgot or remmembered wrong. One thing I see is all of these guys seem to have a case of sameface.

I'd also recommend Keys and Right Side in general. They're more for drawing from refrence, but knowing what life is supposed to look like will help you better design imaginary things.

How do you guys regain the grade-school love for drawing?

I know my art wasn't good in any technical sense as a kid, but the older I get, the harder it is to just enjoy drawing for the sake of creating something. Same for writing, actually. I used to be able to slog through both for like 3/4 hours a day on school days and all summer, but that's been like 10 years ago and I'm actually worse now than I was then. I can't put the passion into it anymore for some reason.

I really like your line work but you lost the essence of the reference. The tilt of the head is completely gone and your drawing is really static.

The overall shape of the head is completely different from the reference, the child like roundness is quite lost at the moment. The gesture of the head is gone.

Keep practicing the construction and lay in of the first 5 minutes of the drawing more - do quick studies and warm ups (like 3 minute heads) before starting more detailed piece. You're gonna do good portraits sooner or later.

It's a good choice to start with the right side of the brain because it's more begginer friendly than keys to drawing.
And it does, if you didn't mess up the lenght of the face it would have been pretty good, but as it is it's still an improvement, you'll see that at the end of the book you'll be able to draw something pretty accurate to reality

>> No.3443553

Honestly looks P good. Work on lighting as your entire figure is not lit correctly by the light source (sword) and ambient light.
It's a great dynamic pose but the outstretched right arm looks awkward (try doing the pose yourself and you will see why). hand could use a bit of work but overall I enjoy the piece. Everything I've mentioned will just get better with continued practice.
>>3442736
As mentioned by other poster- the angles are all off. The eyes look good by themselves but do not resemble that of the drawing at all. That being said I think it's pretty good. Moving forward just remember to measure angles as well as proportions.
>>3442801
as a value study this is great, but i think if you removed the lineart the rendering wouldn't hold up. Either way good job if this was a study for mapping 3-4 values. maybe lay off the airbrush for a more painterly look if you were going for actual rendering. One thing i do notice that you got wrong is that on the upper left hand portrait's shadow side, you essentially have values that are the same as values you have in light. this should not happen (e.g. underneath his right eye, that patch of light is the same value as the light midtones almost as well as under his nose). the overall form should dictate the value e.g. light and dark and contours within the large form should be adjusted accordingly.

>>3443161
don't take this the wrong way but in my eyes gesture is advanced/intermediate concept as its quite subjective and up to the artist to dictate/exagerate. judgin from your lines i'd say focus on proper proportions first. gestures will come over time as you practice.

enjoy the looseness of these and the emphasis on form. On the right track. I think taking some time to measure the figure as a whole would help as the legs look really short (unless the ref was just like that- i dunno).
>>3443176
remove the lines- I guarantee your rendering doesn't stand up by itself. That being said this is a hard ref as its studio lit and rendering forms is hard as its x100 more subtle than dramatic lighting.
that being said- you are completely missing the highlights. you also didn't render the shadow where the bamboos meet each other. Pick a better reference or stick to rendering monochrome forms for a while. color just confuses the issue.
>>3443139
keep going. also I wouldnt get stuck on the hands. you should be doing hands every so often regardless of what phase of the book you are in. this goes with every concept your learn.

Just compare every easy to read length with every other one; as you improve you learn what comparisons tell you the most and go for those instinctively, until then you'll just have to compare angles and lengths with everything you can

In your drawing the right isn't as angular as you drew it and the forehead is longer, there are some easy comparisons to make to notice that while drawing but I think you can find some yourself, try it.

>Pretty /beg/ myself so take it with a grain of salt but
If at a complete loss as for what to draw and you've already looked through a couple of the books from the sticky, set a short and long term goal for yourself and work towards it. (Building towards whatever "end goal" you might have)
The longer term goal should be made up of lots of smaller goals that fit together at least vaguely, plus practice in general (applying what you've learned to your drawings).
"I want to be able to do X this week/month".
Start your day with some practices towards the goal.
If your goal is to draw an anatomically correct person from memory, that's really a difficult long term goal made up of very many parts.
Start with a simpler goal that's actually achievable. You don't need to restrict yourself to baby steps, but if you know you'll burn out by going too hard then don't go crazy with it.
I'm working on getting hands right from any angle, but I'm also shoving them onto my piss-poor drawings now and then to better understand tf is going on outside of this disembodied floating arm.

Your studio photo was shot with three lights and lots of diffused lighting. Note the extremely dark shadows under the jaw and nose, because there are multiple lights shining downwards and bouncing off the walls (making it harder to draw like the other anon said).

Pay closer attention to where subtle highlights and shadows emphasize the edges. On the ear, left jaw, and eyelids (these are important), there are small value areas that define the features.

Im still a /beg with no tablet but i tried as best as i could with no reference and with a mouse.
the rendering in the drawing overall is really nice, like it a lot, looks like your main problem is drawing the head in perspective, in the reference you could probably see how you cant see both ends of the mouth at the same time at the same angle like you have, that's the main problem i think.
Im not really sure if some of the changes i made are correct compared to the ref but some include some proportional issues and your eyes being similar to a sticker slapped in the face, specially the left one which i dont think should be touching the edge of the face like its bending along the face, and i think they are a tad too big.
keep up anon, you will get nice results once you stop symbol drawing

usually i star with the nose, since you have already your face divided into thirds its the easiest one to place correctly, obviously with careful measuring too, since not every head is the same.
but basically if you're using a reference try to see the sizes between the first feature and the contours of the face or if you're drawing from imagination draw it on the second third as loomis says.
from then on what I do is to find the relationships between the nose and the eyes, then the eyes and the mouth with the reilly abstraction, I dont draw it all tho, just what i need to figure out what i need to know, even pic related is a bit too much for me but its ok to illustrate my point

You need to practice and study anatomy. This character's torso is all one piece, instead of a rib cage, waist, pelvis area. The character's thighs are also minuscule, giving the impression of spaghetti legs. It's also difficult to tell if we're looking at the character's front or back, it looks like the snout is facing away from the viewer but the bump between the legs doesn't look like an ass.

I also suggest you start constructing your characters out of 3d shapes, like cylinders, boxes, spheres. Check out the Famous Artists Course, or really any beginner book.

The nose looks off, like it should be bigger and more towards the right of her face. I think that might be throwing you off on where to draw the other eye. And the blush should be above the nose, it looks like she has a mustache right now

Construct your head better and make a cross for the center of the face. Your hair is for a 3/4 face but your ear is for an almost profile view.
Your eye, eyebrow, and nose are too high. Eye is poorly angled. Mouth and especially nose need to be moved to the left.

>> No.3446392

Do you cognizantly have get better at drawing things from certain angles or is that a side effect "mastering" that thing? Like if you study the arm from different angles do you just suddenly know how to foreshorten a arm ? Or is it that you have to have references of different angles mentally or physically?

Work on that construction niBBa. Always, ALWAYS get the construction down before putting in all them pretty lil' details. It will make your life easier and your drawings better. The head and all the features on them are 3D forms, it's important to remember that.

Actually, it's the other way around. Learn how to foreshorten simple objects like rectangular prisms and cylinders. Use those simple forms to build the arm. All of the muscles and whatnot can be imagined as 3D objects wrapping around and interlocking with each other, like a machine of sorts. Break things down into simpler objects that can be easily foreshortened. It's like breaking a problem down in steps to solve it.
Here's some marginally helpful, grossly oversimplified crap to give you an idea of what I mean. Emphasis on 'gross' because I am waaay out of practice, not to mention not that experienced in the first place.

How do you know if you're going to make it or not?
I won't be in my applied art school next year, but my teachers say that if I wasn't so lazy and had more self-confidence I could make it.
Should I trust them?

I have some experience with this whole work ethic thing. If it’s a homework deal or trying to find time to practice and read, then you gotta regiment your day out and force yourself quite a bit to stick to the plan. It’s hard at times, but if you give yourself a set amount of time and plan ahead, it’ll hopefully help with that feeling of laziness.
