Is there a "wrong way" to use reference? I've been copying references and only just realized I'm not actually learning or thinking about anything. How do I fix this.

Change it around, don't just copy. For example, pose the people differently than in the reference, add things that aren't in the reference, combine references. The thought process should go something like "the reference tree is over there, but I want my tree over here, or not have one at all"

There is no right or wrong way to do anything in art. The only 'wrong' way to use a reference is to get caught using a copyrighted photo and to get in trouble doing so (for example, Shepard Fairey and his Obama 'HOPE' lawsuit)

Literally everything else is fair game. The end result is the only thing that matters. No one cares what you learn, your process & growth as an artist, or whether or not you're a hack fraud - if the work looks good then you're fine.

listen to this guy OP, it's the way to tainting your name and never being able to draw a single decent thing. The "No one cares" is one of the bigger ic crab memes, everybody cares, at all times, especially when you fk up. Then everybody will join the pitchfork run

use references to study but not for your actual work that you show to a general audience. Get good at drawing from imagination by doing a lot of studying. It's okay to trace or use reference if it's for concept art because you are getting paid for your ideas, not your process and the industry understand the workflow. For mainstream/normie audience, never use reference otherwise you will get caught copying a pose and you will be blacklisted from normies

I'm not good enough to worry about things like that yet.

"analyze the model, don't copy the model" - Glenn Vilppu

copy high-quality art or photos, not stylized shit.

How true is this all the time though? Isn't copying useful? But Vilppu says to always analyze instead of copying. Can't you copy and analyze at the same time though?

That's what I've been doing. I'm having a hard time trying to draw something 3 dimensional though and it still looks like a flat copy. I try using construction when drawing it too.

You are supposed to use references to analyze object you want to draw, not to copy it. It's fucking hilarious how billions of crabs are falling for """""STUDY""""" meme without realizing what the fuck the are doing.
